Gilbert Makes Another 50-Point Prediction
Well, this is not going to make the Wizards PR people happy. Gilbert deliberately avoided talking to the media yesterday. The Washington Times's John Mitchell got some quotes out of him anyhow. But now we find out that one of CSTV's mad hoops bloggers ducked in on one of Gilbert's nightly practice sessions at the VC during last night's Georgetown-West Virginia game. This is totally against the rules, but I would have done it too.
Gil is shooting until he makes 100 shots at each spot. The mad hoops blogger seems surprised. Who would have thought it; Gilbert Arenas taking some extra jumpers. And, naturally, Gil says a few noteworthy things. Like, he discusses the Portland game.
I ask Arenas about his recent fifty point guarantee against Portland. "I knew after I said that that they'd double (team) me," he says "so I came out not too aggressive and got my teammates involved. It was part of my plan. But when we go up to their place, they won't be expecting it, and they won't double me. That's when I'm really planning on dropping 50."
Well, maybe they wouldn't have been expecting it if you hadn't gone and discussed it with a mad hoops blogger from CSTV. Now, the way these tube thingees work, there's a decent chance people in Portland will read what you just said. As will LeBron James. Whom you just totally called out. Someone tell Joseph White.
"The guy LeBron needs is Sam Cassell," says Arenas, "He needs someone who wants to take the big shots at the end of the game." I interject that LeBron would never stand for that -- it would kill his ego. "LeBron would much rather have Cassell take the final shot," says Arenas. "People don't realize that LeBron doesn't want it."
Also Gilbert plans to finish "whatever's in front of runner up" during the three-point contest, and he says he's "taking over the world a little bit."
Aside from the smarmy self-congratulatory tone--Look at me! I talked to Gilbert Arenas! OMG!!!!!--it's a fine blog post and well worth reading, and it will likely be blogged about incessantly today and in the future. Plus there's video.

Arenas has really starting to grate on me over the past week. It's okay to talk the talk when one is backing it up, not when one is coming off a freakin' nine-point outing.

I just like Wizards news, period. Dan, no complaints from me, keep this Wizards-only as far as I'm concerned. And Redskins when the time comes. I'll be more likely to make return trips to the Bog.

You know, I sometimes wonder if Gilbert is going to wear out his welcome in the NBA. It's true that he's a funny, interesting guy. But he also throws people under the bus and displays an alarming amount of candor.
A lot of guys enter the public eye and spill their guts, only to be burned when their opinions and words are taken out of context. Did Gilbert really mean to kill Lebron? Or was he just messing around? Plenty of people have criticized Lebron for not wanting the big shot, but how many players in the NBA are willing to stick their neck out to say it? If he just ends up irritating everyone in the league, he'll be miserable and his play will suffer. I hope he knows what he's doing.

Gil - We love you, but please just shut it for a few weeks.
Posted by: Louis The Rogue | February 13, 2007 1:57 PM
The filter between Gil's brain and mouth does not exist. I have Sheed as a devout Pistons fan, so I know all about this. As long as it's funny it's ok, but throwing LBJ off the cliff? Not smart. Might as well call him gutless. At least Sheed respects game when he sees it.

Get em Gil. Tell them how you really feel, especially after LeTravel touched you the way he did while you were at the line.
Maybe he means, Lebron is okay with someone else taking it?

Stand by for the announcement that Gil is being traded to Cleveland...
Posted by: Bad Donut | February 13, 2007 2:37 PM
:)I know Wizards fans must have hated that game, but you have no idea how fun its been reading all this out here in Portland! And yes, Gil is going to KILL us next time we play... well maybe.... hhehehe
Posted by: hoodieNation | February 13, 2007 2:45 PM
Hahaha. I love it. I am sorry to all you wizards fans but your boy Gil is a wacko. As far as his comment about coming up here in the northwest and dropping 50 because we wont be expecting it, well guess what we are all now expecting it. I am going to be at that game, more then anything because Arenas doesnt have a clue how hard he will be shut down. I also think he forgets what coming to portland is like..... yes it has been quiet for the last two years, but you have to take into considerations that the franchise wasnt exactly making the best decisions and had fallen from its long standing playoff streak and riegn in the west. Gilbert only caught the end of that when he was with GS. Things are different here now, rip city is coming back and portland fans can make some noise. So Gilbert, bring your schizophrenic personality here to portland and just try..... you havent even scored 30 against the blazers in your carreer. As Jarrett Jack said,
"That's like a dude saying he was going to punch you in your face. I mean, are you going to let him do that? But you know, I'm not into talk and all that, I just go out and play."
Gilbert I dont think Jarrett is in the mood to get punched in the face, so dont expect it to happen!!

How many gamewinners did LeBron have last year in the playoffs against the Wiz? How many did Gilbert miss? He ought to learn to keep quiet until he's actually done something in the playoffs.
Posted by: jcm | February 13, 2007 3:44 PM
So Arenas is talking smack after *HE * was the one who choked in game 6 of the first round last year?
Arenas, please STFU.
Posted by: 761-091 | February 13, 2007 3:45 PM
Yeah, it's annoying when people get "self-congrulatory" -- almost as bad as "a baseball wife who poses without much cothing..." Dan, you've got to get the Post to ante up for a spellchecker. Either that or petition Merriam-Webster to add a few new entries. ;-)

Man, the hockey haters are coming out. You could have just e-mailed me, OC. But thanks for the catches.

Lord, must be a slow day in Cleveland and Portland to have these people here chiming in.
First of all, it's been decades since anyone was afraid of any player from Portland on the court. Now off the court, that's another story altogether. And how dare you guys show your face around here after giving us Kevin Duckworth AND Rod Strickland? We're not making Kwame jokes on Laker bogs, are we?
And second, Cleveland fans can start talking trash the minute their lousy city ever wins anything. Gilbert didn't say anything about Lebron James that anyone not wearing a Lebron James jersey already knows. The guy is a singular talent, but he doesn't have the killer instinct the greats have, the killer instinct we're hoping Gilbert is developing. And in other news, congrats on 14 consecutive starts by Hughes. That matches his 14 points per game, and it's awfully close to his $14,000,000 per season. Who is your GM, Wes Unseld?
Posted by: bryc3 | February 13, 2007 4:01 PM
Guess it doesn't take a killer instinct to beat the Wiz in the playoffs, huh?
Posted by: jcm | February 13, 2007 4:15 PM
"I love Duke. I love Duke"
why gilbert, why?
Posted by: littles | February 13, 2007 4:26 PM
Who needs a killer instinct when you've got the refs in your pocket?
Posted by: Gack | February 13, 2007 4:27 PM
You know, as a person whose filter between her brain and mouth has been known to fail, I kinda can't get too exercised for Gilbert. 'Cept when it gets so bad for his teammates, and then he's messing with my team. So, yeah, for a couple of weeks, for the team, I wish he would lay low.
Except, of course, talking to Agent Stein.

Your boy Arenas watched Lebron drop game
3 and game 5 on him last year. What he
mean he dont want the shot?? He shot ya all
boy right out the playoffs and will do so
agin this year. Smack taking little stir
fry 3 bombing freak.
Posted by: jmoe | February 13, 2007 5:15 PM
Gilbert is simply trying to get in LeBron's head now, so that hopefully it will pay dividends come playoff time. LeBron wants to win in the last second, whether he's shooting it or passing it. Hell, i don't care if its Damon Jones winning every single game at the end.
Posted by: T.rex | February 13, 2007 5:21 PM
This guy Arenas is so starved for attention its not even funny. what a joke. apparently he forgot about how he choked in game 6 -
"hey Gilbert, if you miss these free throws, the game is over."
CLANK!
CLANK!
Posted by: tom | February 13, 2007 5:37 PM
This seems like the right time to remind our friends from Cleveland that while Gil choked, Lebron should have been called for a technical.
And then there was one of the most blatant no-calls on a traveling violation you will ever see this side of the And 1 tour...
Your guy came through in the clutch, no doubt, but don't think we forgot how he did it either.
Posted by: Prophet | February 13, 2007 6:28 PM
Take a chill Gil. You're a great player but you show little class. And by the way,
you just stoked LeBron's fire and we thank you. You will be a marked man in the league. Have fun.

Agent 0 needa lay off that DC chron! Yeah, he bustin catz drawls this year. Yeah, he he startin in his first All-Star game. But come on G.A! Callin out Bron?? You sure you wanna do that?? Must be that DC chron...

aside from having a short memory...Agent Zero also has zero brains. he forgot about the playoffs last year.
He makes guarantee thinking that the NBA is his playground..keep on dreaming Agent Zer0.
If the Wizard will have a chance to either get Arenas or Lebron...100% they'll go for Lebron. Even players like Butler, Jamison and the rest would love to have LBJ instead Agent Zero.
The problem with Gil, he thinks he's a superstar, a big-time player and a great player.
100% he's just a ballhog.
As for Dwade's comments lately about Lebron not getting tha balls that much..I think he's just trying to get in Lebron's head so that he will be more discouraged.
One thing about Lebron he's intelligent and mature for his age.
you will never hear him dissect another player's game. unlike Wade, who is a self-proclaimed leader. forgetting that without Shaq in their team...they're just a team.
Posted by: leon | February 13, 2007 7:02 PM
Gilbert just woofin to get into LBJ's dome. He knows LBJ's the face and the future of the league. I don't know if woofin through the media is such a good idea G.

While there has always been questions surrounding LBJ's willingness to take the final shot, there is no question of his desire to win as a 'TEAM'. Memo to Gilbert Arenas, you can not win a NBA Championship scoring 50 points a night and no supporting cast. Please remember even MJ passed to Steve Kerr, John Paxson, Scottie Pippen and a few other in instances for the game winning shot. This means it takes a team to win and 1 person does not always need to shoot to win. I would think that a Point Guard would understand this, however, we must remember that Arenas is a shoot first guard in every since of the word. Deferring to your team mates during the regular season, allows LBJ to drive the base line with 3.? seconds left to win a game because Gilbert thought he was going to pass the ball to a teammate which is something he has yet to master/understand. Is it really a coincidence that your team has began to suffer since A Jamison was injured or did Agent Zero really think he could make for Jamison's points on his own. Also, as of recent, LBJ has not scored 25 plus points a game, however, there are others on the team who have been contributing which results in WINS. Ultimately, don't you want to say the team won 50 plus games and not how many games of 50 plus points I had. While Arenas is a talented individual, it seems that the Coach and Captain need to constantly remind the Agent this is a Team game played on both ends of the Court.
Offense Sells Tickets but Defense wins Game's, This is True in all Sports.

G.A got game no question. He's improved every year since being an average player at Zona. The idea of him pullin Lebron's card is crazy!! G.A better choose his words wisely....He might have to eat em.

I'm a longtime Laker fan but I think Arenas is great. He's got a first class work ethic, no fear, and is about as talented as anybody in the league. Plus he's funny as hell.
Posted by: tbs | February 13, 2007 9:45 PM
tsk, tsk,tsk.. Anus Arenas botched it big time, and so now he blames anybody and everybody, anything and everything. do yourself a favor, you don't have to be a jerk all the time
Posted by: gilbert anus | February 14, 2007 12:06 AM
Arenas had a modest streak and all of a sudden he got cocky. Now that teams are paying more attention to him and had him figured out, he tries to deflect the criticism to somebody else -doesn't matter if he is an opponent or his own coach. Maybe somebody ougth to show him he is nothing more than a volume shooter as his low 40's shooting percentage. Last season, Caron Butler went down and suddenly Washington struggled. This time its Jamison who is down and again Washington struggled. Obviously, Arenas can't put the team on his back if Butler or Jamison is not around to form the Wiz' Big 3. So what does he do? He offers alibis and cop outs. Or criticize others to make himslef look good. What class! I am beyond overwhelmed!

Portland here. This article has been posted on all the Blazer message boards. Thanks Gil, for psyching up the Blazers to beat the Wizards next game. We need these blowouts. Can you keep doing this the rest of your career? You are becoming the backbone of our team. If even Michael Jordan had bragged before games, it would have cost him a lot of points. Do this against the Blazers only. I don't want all the other teams getting free wins, too.

I'd love to ask Gilbert if he remembers if LeBron was willing to take the last shots (yes... I said shots, plural) in the playoffs last year... when he single-handedly eliminated the Wizards?
Posted by: Kevin | February 14, 2007 4:00 PM
If you have any decency at all Mr. Anus Arenas, you should give -up your starting post to Vince Carter or even Joe JOhnson. Then you can enroll in a writing class so you can publish a book on " How to Fail Miserably and Blame Someone Else". That's a sure bestseller. Now if book sales flop, you can find motivation in finding more alibis and cop outs for every failure you make. Perhaps then, your all-consuming thirst for attention would have been satiated. But then again , maybe not.
Posted by: ragnarok | February 15, 2007 12:12 AM
LeBron James last second game winner in Game 5, Damon Jones last second game winner in Game 6 off the pass from LeBron James.
What difference does it make Gilbert? Either way, you lose.
Posted by: Ben | February 15, 2007 1:20 AM
Oh so good to hear Gil's plans for Portland. Fans there can now count on one source for their 23rd win of the season.
Gil we loved you when you talked and backed it up. It is tired to hear you talk now - get your team back to winning first. After all that is the purpose of the game....uh Gil? Did I lose you with that last thought?....Gil?

Arenas may have screwed up that prediction but I mean come on Portland has been trashing it up all season.

Give that CSTV reporter some cred--while most "sportswriters" are mailing in their columns from blackberries or filming talking heads segments, here's a guy ducking ropes and slipping down hallways to actually, well, talk to players. Name me another reporter who's gotten such an inside look at what the best shooter in the NBA (granted not for the past few games) is doing.
Personally--I'd like to see a lot more writing from this Matt Waxman character.
