Sun Ming Ming Goes National

I knew Sun Ming Ming was scheduled to be on Today this morning, but I forgot. A heartbreaking mistake, as it turns out. Pray that it appears out of the innerwebs either. If you missed this comment above, here's what Local Poll voter Bryc3 saw:

Sun Ming Ming was on the Today show this morning, circa 8am. They asked him to dunk for them, and he promptly missed. Clutch. The ball bounced back toward the camera and they immediately cut to commercial with no segue.

When they came back, they showed (to my delight) the clip of the school kid heaving the three quarter court shot that rings the cheerleader right in the head. Then they showed Sun Ming Ming's second dunk attempt, in which he barely dunks the ball, has it bounce off his shoulder and carom directly off Meredith Viera's head.

That, my friends, is an awesome way to start a Friday.

One thing that particularly stood out to me in the Gazette's report about Sun's debut was this: he didn't take the tip. Are you kidding me? He's 7-foot-9 and can't win a jump ball? Does he actually get shorter when he jumps? Does he somehow sink into the ground? Can he, in fact, jump? Bryc?

Well, luckily, some interpid soul shot the opening tip at Sun's second game, against the Wilmington Sea Dawgs (motto: We have just as many spelling mishaps as the Arkansas River Catz!) Sure enough, Sun takes the opening tip. And he does not jump. He doesn't need to--he wins the tip standing flat-footed--but still, this is just bizarre. He can barely dunk, and he can't jump? And he's gonna play in the NBA? Also, he appears to have finished with 4 points and 1 rebound in that game.

Video doesn't show Meredith's noggin getting rattled unfortunately :-(

To be fair to the Minger, I think his botched dunk can be chalked up to just flubbing the handle. Who can blame him? As cold as it was in DC today, I can't imagine how bad it must have been in NYC.

But I do think he may actually get shorter when he jumps, because he has to gather himself to try to get up into the air. He makes Mark Eaton look like a gazelle.
