Golfing With Tiger

Or rather, golfing on Tiger's course in honor of Tiger's tourney while Tiger flits around in helicopters and poses for photos with Congressional groundskeepers.

The media were invited to golf Congressional this morning. About 120 people went out, not all of them media. I came up with this great idea that I would cover the media tournament, but that didn't really work out, because it was too hot, and I got here too late, and I didn't recognize many of the media people, and there were too many gnats, and the media persons weren't that great at golf, and bad golf isn't that fun to watch as a spectator.

I did see a local magazine writer, a writer who has tweaked me for some of my stories in the past. He was teeing off on a par 3. His tee shot went maybe 20 yards in the air and then bounced off a cart path. If I weren't a kind and beneficent blogger, I'd probably mention his name here.

I also saw WRC's Lindsay Czarniak and Dan Hellie, calling it quits, before their round was over, although they later went back out, as it turned out. I asked for scores.

"Well, it was hard for them to compete with my 68," Czarniak said.

"On the first four holes," Hellie said.

I asked why they quit early.

"Because I got so tired of watching Lindsay hit it four yards at a pop," Hellie said.

"I still just don't believe you broke down in tears," Czarniak countered. "That was what shocked me. Because you do come across as brawny on television."

I moved on to another group. I saw Pete Gilbert from Baltimore's WBAL, and told him I was covering the media event.

"Is that ironic, or...?" he asked. I asked how the course was, and he gave it a rave review. "Aside from the gnats, it couldn't be any better," he said. "Of course, that could mean many things here in D.C...."

Soon after this, a Congressional employee told me I was not permitted to wear my baseball cap backwards. Even if you're blogging about the media golf tournament, it would seem, certain standards must apply.

Later, I saw Fox 5's Dave Feldman and Lou Holder, who both claimed to have shot a 90. I asked Feldman whether he was bigger than the course.

"I'm much bigger," he said.

"Around the waist," Hellie pointed out.

Eventually, they announced the winning four-some. It was actually a tie for first, so there were eight winners. The only name I recognized was Larry Marshak from USA Today. So congratulations, Larry.
