Sergeant Slaughter Comes to Bowie
Yesterday I called over to Bowie Baysox land, seeking to find out whether the crowd on Saturday had successfully set a world record for most people simultaneously yo-yoing. The belief in Bowie is yes, they have. I'm told that 1,496 fans registered to yo-yo together.
(Remember, there were originally 1,500 yo-yos. What happened to the other four yo-yos, you might ask? "They may have been on our general manager's desk or something," said Bowie Director of Communications Ryan Roberts.)

This, friends, is history being made. (Courtesy Baysox)
The game also drew a representative of the American Yo-Yo Association, which has more stringent group yo-yo- standards than the Guinness Book folks, so it's possible that Bowie also set an AYYA record. All of this is unofficial pending the paperwork and all that; Bowie's whoopee cushion record from several years back still hasn't been officially codified. Anyhow, the plan was to yo-yo on the concourse, but they wound up having everyone stand up in their seats after the game ended and yo-yo, together, for two minutes, as the bells of history chimed, silently. Congratulations to all who were involved in this magical event.
But this news was quickly overtaken by more important news out of Bowie: Sergeant Slaughter is coming to town for Bowie's Second Annual Army Night. From the release:
Sgt. Slaughter will be available for a limited numberof live call-in interviews on Thursday, June 7th and Friday, June 8th, the week prior to the June 14th event. He will be available to talk about this event and his Professional Wrestling Career during his interviews.

That chin would make Bill Cowher weep.
I'm happy to report that I was the first to request an interview with the good sergeant. Just when you think local minor league baseball has reached its apex, a formerly Arab-baiting hall of fame pro wrestler comes to town with plans to celebrate the troops, only to then suddenly turn into a bad guy, rip off his uniform and put Val Majewski into a Cobra Clutch as fans pelt him with peanuts and bubble gum.
Speaking of pro wrestling:
1) Following that Redskins-related Ultimate Warrior video, JoeSportsFan informs me that there's a lot I didn't know about the Warrior, summarized thus: "So to recap, a former wrestler turned conservative speaker, who legally changed his name to "Warrior Warrior" and speaks out against homosexual lifestyles, also enjoys forcing Santa into bondage. And hugging other men."
2) A prominent local sports columnist, who surely has better things to do than watch pro wrestling YouTubes, sent me this tribute to Abdullah the Butcher, whose restaurant (Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food) really ought to have been included in my list of athlete-owned eateries. Here's the tribute.

Sgt. Slaughter in Bowie?
The whole Ultimate Warrior thing?
Abdullah's House of Ribs & Chinese Food?
I know it's nearly 11am, but I dare say it's too ealry in the day for this sort of thing. I am not ready to handle any of these pieces of news individually, much less all at once.
Well, Wednesday is now shot. On to Thursday...

I'm betting Bill Cowher will come to DC permanently for the start of the 2008/2009 football season.

Sgt. Slaughter has a history of stunning heel turns.
Remember, during the Gulf War, he was an Iraqi sympathizer who wore Iron Sheik-style curly boots and claimed to be a personal friend of Saddam.
