This Morning in Bog
Our paper decides to submarine Jason Bergmann's no-hitter attempt. First Svrluga drops a blog item full of subtle import. Then I, seeing the item, turn on the TV between the 7th and 8th, just before McCann's at-bat. Plus, a high-ranking WaPo editor sends out a message to the sports department: "Nats have a no-hitter through seven," or something to that effect. The result was predictable. It's possible that RFK will never see a no-hitter; Phil Wood says the District hasn't seen one since 1931.
This is what Jason Bergmann makes me think of.
Jay Payton and Melvin Mora nearly come to blows in Toronto, which, although they're all made up now, will be much discussed for weeks. The Wayward Oriole assigns much blame for the O's Mother's Day Meltdown. Sample: "84.4% blame sam perlozzo, who complains his bullpen is worn out and then defies all logic by rushing them into a non-save situation.... bottom line: if perlozzo just sits there with a donut in his mouth, orioles win." Perlozzo, meantime, says he's not paying attention to the criticism.
Press Box Online sees a Hopkins-UMBC matchup in the Men's Lax semifinals, which would be great for Baltimore, not so much for the D.C. Sports Bog. Meanwhile, the Balto Sun previews the UMBC-Delaware showdown, in which the Blue Hens, representing the powers of good, must prevail.
Former Maryland recruit Jai Lucas is going to Florida.
Deuce of Davenport finds a photo of Manute Bol standing in the security line at the Oakland airport. Which, granted, isn't front-page news, but good luck resisting the urge to see that photo.
Jared Jeffries is nominated for the Just Call Me Juice Terrible Jersey Hall of Fame.
East Coast Bias, continuing to ignore the fact that blogs are the future and horse-racing is the past, breaks down the Preakness vs. the Derby and decides the Preakness is better. Sample: "Much as I love high society ladies in ugly hats, I like turfing lawns in the ghetto better."
The [Joe] Gibbs family has "religious objections to alcohol consumption," which might cost them a shot at landing Dale Jr. And via Running Redskins, Chris Samuels donates a house in honor of Mother's Day.
Finally, Jim Williams says Dave Feldman is "quickly becoming Washington's most popular sportscaster" and calls him "the favorite to be the heir apparent to NBC4's George Michael," whatever that means. Which begs the question: who is your favorite local sportscaster, not counting Russ Thaler?

Maybe Jim Williams was acknowleding the supernova that is Thaler and just handed Feldman next best in show. Or at least I HOPE he was acknowleding Thaler!

Johnny Holiday is the best sportscaster I've ever listened to. I went to maryland, and listened to his broadcast with the TV on mute. Now I live in New Orleans, and I still listen to him over the internet (though I can't ever see the games on TV down here).
I'd listen to him do a play-by-play on anything. Curling, lawn darts, shuffleboard, you name it.

Re: East Coast Bias on the Preakness... does he really think there isn't an infield scene at Churchill Downs? Newsflash Baltimore: you're not the only place on earth that can throw an infield college party. Maybe it's time to be proud of something else.

Best? Dave Johnson. And not Dave "AND DOWNNNNN THE STRETCH THEY COME!!!!" Johnson, but Dave "It's in the net! It's in the net! It's in the net!" Johnson. Or if you're working FSC, he's called Dave "It's in the net!" Johnson.
I mean, he's in Dallas one evening and back in Bethesda the next, then does the morning radio for 'TOP. What a hard-working guy!
