Chris Webber as Museum Curator
Courtesy of Mister Irrelevant comes word that today is the day for the press conference announcing The Chris Webber Collection of African American Artifacts and Documents Exhibit taking place at the Charles H. Wright Museum in Detroit. The exhibit runs from June 28-Sept. 28. No word whether Webber will be offering guided tours, or insisting on any artifact trades. From the release:
Next up: a federal memorial on The Mall. But I think someone from the Webber Foundation might occasionally read the Bog, so really, I'm just joking, and this all sounds swell.
Rare books and documents drawn from Webber's personal collection include treasures of the American past such as Phillis Wheatley's first edition Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, published in 1773; a personal postcard from Malcolm X to Roots author Alex Haley; a Frederick Douglass carte-de-viste; a signed passport from Toussaint L'Overture; a tribute program autographed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; letters from George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington; a rare edition of The History of Colored Baseball by Sol White; an accounting journal from early 1800's Virginia documenting the buying and selling of families; personal pieces autographed to Mr. Webber include Muhammad Ali's 70lb "GOAT" book, and a letter from President Clinton to Webber after his infamous "timeout" during the 1993 NCAA Finals.
So let's see, that would be interesting, interesting, interesting, interesting, interesting, interesting, interesting, interesting, interesting, and utterly ridiculous, which isn't a horrible ratio, I suppose. But has no one suggested that the Bill-Clinton-to-Chris-Webber letter maybe has yet to rise to the level of "treasures of the American past?" It's no blue Gap dress, that's for sure.
