Tom Knott Crushes Gilbert

Did you read Knott's column today? He's all over Gilbert. He has two complaints:

1) Gilbert made an off-handed remark about how he has two kids and need to keep his finances in mind, leading Knott to compare him to Latrell Sprewell.

We live in a free marketplace, and if Arenas is inclined to test what his unique talents might bring on the open market, good for him. That is the game. That is what we all do. We all want to be paid, and the more we are paid, the better.

Just leave the children out of it. Whenever you hear adults discussing how it is all about the children, you know it is time to secure your wallet. It is rarely about the children. It is usually about the adults saying it is about the children.

As Bethlehem Shoals noted on FanHaus, this is stupid. Tom Knott is in favor of capitalist striving, but not if you want to use the money on your children? What would be an acceptable motive for capitalist striving? A desire to buy more cars? To amass men's grooming supplies? That's ok? But not your kids? Why can't your kids be a motive for capitalist striving? Anyhow, Gilbert posted 792 words on his blog about why he wants more money, and he doesn't mention his kids once.

More importantly, Knott also crushes Gilbert for saying he's concerned about the Wiz's personnel. The implication being he should concentrate on winning games and not getting injured and leave the personnel to the personnel people.

Please. Who does LeBron James have playing alongside him? A rookie named Boobie. A Lithuanian past his prime. A Brazilian in a fright wig. Somebody named Sasha. The modestly serviceable Drew Gooden. The 94-year-old Eric Snow. Donyell "Glued to the 3-Point Line" Marshall. And Larry "I Used to be Somebody" Hughes.
James and the Cavaliers would be unbeatable in the conference the next few seasons if Butler and Antawn Jamison were on their roster.

First of all, wouldn't anyone take Z and Boobie/Hughes over Haywood and and Stevenson at this point? So that's sort of 2-2, in terms of supporting cast. Secondly, what's the point of saying that LeBron would be unbeatable with Butler and Jamison? Gilbert would surely agree. Gilbert isn't LeBron James. He's trying to play for a winning team in Washington, and Washington isn't going to win any championships with its current roster. Anyhow, that LeBron James supporting cast didn't exactly overwhelm the Spurs, and everyone is now writing how he needs help.

The Wizards could use some tweaks, too. Everyone understands this. Gilbert just isn't shy about talking about it, because he isn't shy about talking about anything.

Reason number 1,714 to ignore the Times

Posted by: Unsilent Majority | June 15, 2007 04:00 PM

i thought that's what columnists for major dailies were supposed to do: chug out a bunch of inflammatory, sanctimonious nonsense a couple of times a week that doesn't hold up under the smallest amount of scrutiny. hard to believe that many of us would rather read about MLS stars critiquing people's cereal preferences.

thank god for King Kaufman. and can someone please give Allen Barra a bi-weekly gig again?

Posted by: jamie | June 15, 2007 04:48 PM

And that's why we love Gil.

Posted by: Patty | June 15, 2007 05:48 PM

it sort of figures that a columnists would make such an illogical statement. how can u compare 3 players to 2. z, boobie, hughes, to stevenson and haywood. firstly our starting five is better than theres, and did u forget our big three was better than theres and hell, the top of the list. gilbert and the big three needs a supporting casts. keep deshawn, and etan, and just start over. make that trade and get jermaine, rashard, or zach. sign some key role players with heart, stevenson is our best role player, he does not try to take over and he understands his position, hustle, defense, and open jumpers. Lets get for real, i believe if gilbert and butler were not injured, the wiz would have beaten the cavs, or pistons, and we would have definitely given the spurs more of a fight because we do have shooters! and one man does not make our team.

Posted by: brian | June 16, 2007 03:00 PM

Knott is right. Play some D, let Ernie put together the roster and take a little less money so we can get a halfway decent big man. Otherwise you're saying you need every last dollar more than you need to win a title.

Posted by: gregg olson | June 16, 2007 06:45 PM

Does Knott realize that the Wizards were kind of injured this year? That they were quite possibly better than the Cavs at full strength, were 1st in the East at the All-Star Break, and could have had a strong chance to make the Finals in this watered down East?

On a side note: I did a show in DC recently, and the Times panned it.

I took that as a good thing.

knott is wrong. i agree with this brian guy. what we have to look at is the spurs management. they bring in these international superstars to be on their team is role players for the minimum price. knowing the minimum here is much more than they are getting paid over there. hint: toni kukoc with the bulls! yea they started this s$%@. anyway, gilbert and caron are locked. we need stevenson for his hustle. we need a center with great defense and a post game. Huhmmm lets see...... jermaine and zach randolph. we need a shooter on the bench somethin like salim stoudamire or someone to add some consistent shooting, and we need a energetic point, like kenyon dooling, with defense, the magic has 4 point gaurds they need to free someone. KEEP DESHAWN

Posted by: knott a chance | June 17, 2007 11:22 AM

get rid of Deshawn because he basically underachieved this year with his flicted looking, over-acted, put-too-much-effort-into-making-his-form-look-sweet jumper. Its like he's tryna do a cross between Kobe and Dwyane.
Anyway, get rid of that horrible excuse for a center Haywood. Get someone serviceable who can actually REBOUND. I can't understand how someone that is 7'2" or so can't give me 10 rebounds a game on a team that doesn't rebound well? He's more concerned on working on his jumper mid-season and crying about touches. He's finished in this league anyway. UM, get rid of Jarvis. He had ALL year to find a rhythm and he couldn't produce. He TRIES to be a jumpshooter, but the only thing sweet about his jumper is his form. This is someone who was 10th overall pick of one of the best draft classes ever ('03-'04). Even Boris Diaw has an award and he was a second round pick! Being in the top ten, with the talent he's supposed to have, Deshawn SHOULD have ridden the bench this year, and Jarvis should have started, but he showed no signs of promise. He was content.
Keep Songaila, actually, START Songaila. He is the ONLY DISCIPLINED PLAYER on that bench for the Wizards. Very efficient. Keep Etan by all means for his passion. (He was almost a double double guy before he got injured). Get a center and two scorers for the bench and the Wizards will represent the East in the Finals next year, no questions asked. The door is WIDE open for them for the THIRD STRAIGHT SEASON.

Im going to say some things that may disturb some true wizards fans but remember i do cause i bleed wizards blue. First is my cut list as follows: Brendan Heywood and Jarvis Hayes, Both have the physical tools to play the game but have not lived up to potential. I know people that are close with Heywood and since Highschool the guy just does not have Heart to be a physical rebounder. Jarvis is a good player who needs to find his mid-range game first so he can become that shooter that is desired by most fans, until then a change of team may put fire back into his game. Next up is Trades, I know I know nobody wants to talk about trading Jamison but just like trading Larry Hughes this would make the team an instant contender. My pick would be to trade for Zack Randolph a guy who rebounds and puts points up every night. The guy reminds me of charles barkley, does not look like the biggest person on the court but with skill and hustle will put any big man to shame. Remember Zack Randolph is a student of Rasheed Wallace and Jermain O Neil thats says alot about his pedigree. To be the best you play againts the best. Last but not least on my list is the Youth Movement. Eddie Jordan has to find a way to get big minutes to Andray Blatch he has the talent but you can not learn how to play in the NBA in practice. I am firmly againts playing your young guys at the end of season when teams are not playing at full strength or not playing at all. The time for Andray this year would be the first 30 games and i bet by the last 50 games you see the promise you invested in with a first round pick. This is why the Wizards should have the luxury to trade Jamison to the trail blazers who could use a veteran that does not need plays set for him to help contribute to there young stars and give the wizards the post presence they need to be the EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPS.

Just a open comment to all so called wiz fans. It is easy to say get rid of this guy and get this guy. In the NBA it is very hard to get a quality player. If a guy can play, a team is not going to let him go. You all feel that Haywood is garbage. Don't you think other teams no that? In basketball the best player usually wins championships i.e. Jordan,Shaq,Wade and Duncan. It is not about the help. If you don't have the best player you are not going to win unless you get lucky one season like Detroit. For the Wizards to win a championship, our franchise player has to turn into the best player in the league. So Wiz fans stop wasting your time trying to trade Haywood and Jamison, getting more time Blatche and signing Stevenson. It does not matter unless Gilbert decides that he wants and is willing to be the best player not (scorer)not (most fan friendly) not (most marketed)not(silliest blogger)but the BEST PLAYER. Lets Hope!

wizin2008: Balderdash. Your "best player" theory is a joke...how many times did bill russells "teams" beat down wilt chamberlain?

Gil is gonna ball to the best of his abilities...wiz need to stay healthy and get hot at the right time. As to all the blogs, personality, whatever else...get over yourslf, gil turning all robot isnt going to give him more skill.

Well written, Dan.

Dark, dark rumor:

Arenas to Lakers, Kobe to Bulls, Gordon and Thomas (of the Bulls) to Washington.

Posted by: Nancy | June 19, 2007 12:13 PM

Wizin2008,
Why? Why? How can you say Wiz in 2008 and dont mention the fact the wizards need a big man? How could we get one? Jamison sounds like a great player to move, not that D.C. and Wizards fans dont love him its about winning and the parts you can change to make the team better. 28ppg 8rebs in the playoffs does not sound like a bad guy. Haywood is not garbage, we see what he can do after a fight with Etan Thomas when he is mad the boy will give you 12ppg 8rebs 2blks. He has the skill just no heart maybe he needs a coach who can give him that, the wizards have tried everything. You know what? I would trade the 16 pick and jamison for the 37 pick and Zack Randolph we need that guy.
