Tony Kornheiser as a Youngster

Since this will assure me at least seven or eight hits from WaPo editors, here's yesterday's FanHaus-uncovered 22-year-old clip of Tony Kornheiser, Larry King and some other guys talking about the Redskins. It's basically a Reagan Administration "Around the Horn," without the sound effects and the insane screaming. I don't think I can beat this line from the Sportz Assassin, so I won't try: "What about this video freaks you out more: Larry King looking like he's alive or Tony Kornheiser's porn-stache?"

The thing that's remarkable to me--and maybe I'm just in one of my states today--is that 22 years later, after the fall of Communism and the birth of the cell phone and massive NFL realignment, it's just three dudes sitting in front of a camera and talking about Joe Gibbs and the Redskins and the state of the NFC East. I refuse to believe that this will continue indefinitely. I refuse to believe that in the year 2127, three sort of frumpy guys will be sitting in front of a camera and talking about the Redskins and the state of the NFC East and, heaven help us, Joe Gibbs. There's gotta be something better in store for humanity at some point, right? No? This is it?

Also, Tony makes references to Captain Kangaroo and the Rockettes, which I believe were old-guy references even in the mid-'80s. Also, Larry King lavishes praise on Jay Schroeder and George Rogers while opining that "I think winners win," a line which will probably surface on "Around the Horn" this afternoon.

Damn. He was orange even back then.

My Gawd -- give TK an afro and thick glasses, and he's Welcome Back Kotter.

Larry King looks like a serial killer.

TK has always sucked.

This looks like leftover AbScam hidden camera footage.

Wow - more proof that Tony Kornheiser is a total loser, as if we needed it.

If anyone was wondering, I believe this is from a weekly show called "Redskins Playbook" which aired on Monday nights in the 1980s on Channel 5 (pre-Fox Network) hosted by Bernie Smilovitz (now in Detroit) and later Steve Buckhantz, and usually featured a discussion among local sportswriters and broadcasters for the second half of the show. Back then, though, that kind of discussion, hard as it is to believe, was pretty rare. In 1985, you would have called this the sports version of the McLaughlin Group or Agronsky and Company (now Inside Washington).

Wow, TV was still black and white back then.
