Phil Mickelson Loves Condi Rice

Phil Mickelson spent July 4 at the White House. He was asked how this came about.

"I don't really know how it all came about, but it sure was fun," he said. "It was a very surreal experience to be on the veranda watching the fireworks with both President Bushes and their wonderful wives.

And I had a chance to meet Condoleeza Rice. I'm a big fan of hers. I really enjoyed meeting her for the first time. And I met some other interesting people."

I love the way he pluralized President Bush as "both President Bushes." I might have gone with "The Presidents Bush," but I'll take his way. By the way, I'm shocked at the idea of a prominent PGA pro apparently having Republican inklings.

Mickelson was four over today, by the way.

A bunch more golfers were also there: Fred Funk, Justin Leonard, Jeff Maggert, etc. Funk was also asked about the trip.

"It was great," he said. "I think my wife and I and everybody that was there was made to feel so comfortable and felt--I just felt so honored to even be asked to be a part of the birthday celebration for George W. and spend the 4th of July in the White House watching the fireworking and having dinner and drinks and conversation. It was really laid back and a lot of fun. Very memorable."
