Gilbert's a Plagiarist

As all those commenters noted, Gilbert's shark routine on his blog is completely, and I mean completely, ripped off from the Bad Boys of Comedy's Ian Edwards. The video is profane, so I'm probably better off linking to it than embedding it, but let's compare the texts.

Edwards: Ain't no such thing as shark attacks.

Gilbert: There is no such thing as a shark attack.

Edwards: We live on the land. Sharks live in the water. If you get caught down there, you trespassing.

Gilbert: We're humans. We live on land. Sharks live in water. So if you're swimming in the water and a shark bites you, that's called trespassing.

Edwards: You know what a real shark attack is? A real shark attack is if you someplace you supposed to be and a shark shows up. That's a shark attack. Is if you someplace you supposed to be and a shark shows up. If you in the crib taking a shower tonight and you feel a tap on your shoulder and you turn around, 'What's up playa, shark attack time baby.'

Gilbert: A shark attack is if you're chilling at home, sitting on your couch, and a shark comes in and bites you; now that's a shark attack.

Sigh. The New Republic will always have Stephen Glass, the New York Times will always have Jayson Blair, the Washington Post will always have Janet Cooke, and Gilbert will always have his shark attacks.

[Just so I'm not accused of plagiarism, it turns out Gilbertology beat me to this, but I came by the video independently.]

Oh man.. Gil better watch out for Joe Rogan now, he'll launch a fatwa as soon as he finds out there's joke-stealing from comedians...

And to think, I thought "Let's all get drunk and make bad decisions" was natural comedic genius.

he quotes things, anyone under the age of 32 constantly quotes pop culture. is he thinking we'll get the quote? possible. did he think the nba.com intern would get it and link to the actual thing itself? maybe. does it matter when you're not a writer by profession and doing this for fun? shouldn't.

Next thing, you're going to say that Edwards made 100,000 jump shots this summer too. Gilbert's still the man.

Gilbert's not a world-class plagarizer because he didn't go to Maryland. We grow plagarizers.

Dan you seem like a good guy, but finding this out is only a shock if you aren't 'in the know'. Would you say he was plagarising if he did a well known bit? (i.e. Joe Pesci's 'so im funny to you?' from Goodfellas) Gilbert isnt plagarising...athletes quote funny lines in movies and shows and make it aware to the masses who would NEVER hear this bit if it not for a celeb or bballer to make you aware of it. As a reporter you might lose your lunch if you knew how many of Richard Pryor's one-liners alone you've been charmed with by players.
