No Ice Girls

This is, apparently, not breaking news, but regardless, I'm here to tell you that there will be no ice-based cheer persons at Caps games this season. From PR guy Nate Ewell:

"It's something that we've looked at and we're still looking at. Obviously it's something that creates strong feelings, pro and con, so we're still trying to evaluate whether it would be a positive thing for our fans in the long run. We weren't confident at this point that it was a good idea. If we do it, we're going to do it right."

The Caps will thus remain the only team in the Southeast Division without ice-based cheer persons. The idea is still on the table for the '08-'09 season, but again, nothing has been decided. This could turn out to be like the red-white-and-blue color change (took years), or the WaPo Sunday Style-Sunday Arts merger (took years), or the name change from Wizards back to Bullets (good luck).

For the record, I'm pro-in-game-entertainment, anti-in-game-distractions, pro-full-time-cheering and anti-sexual exploitation, so take that for what it's worth.

You're so talented at saying something, yet saying nothing at all. Now that's politics!

Where'd the picture go of the "Storm Squad"? Now it's the Blackhawk girls (granted they're better looking, but the rednecks with the tractor tire was funnier).

Yay! That has to be oen of the dubest ideas that I have ever heard of. The Ice Kids promotion is far more valuble to promoting hockey to the whole area.

Gotta give props to the Ted and Caps PR decision makers. Cheerleaders arent a good idea for hockey. Heck, I'm not sure I like'em in any sport, but you arent going to take them away from football, college or pro. Always liked that the Steelers dont have them, but thats another issue...

BTW, to continue the Caps-DC United synergy, other MLS teams (columbus, colorado, chivas etc.) have cheerleaders, but thankfully United does not. Good choice, Mr. Payne.
