Duke Dog Decked in Mascot Furfight
It's obviously been an impressive few months for the fuzzy fraternity, from the Oregon Duck-Houston Cougar tailwag to Mr. Met dancing the Bhangra at an Indian wedding to the KC Wolf's starring role last weekend. Good stuff, all.
But now, the giant-headed madness has come to our oversized neck of the woods, and it wasn't pretty. With Coastal Carolina playing James Madison last week, Duke Dog apparently taunted Chauncey the Chanticleer, who then speared Duke Dog, who then attempted to chase down Chauncey, until security came in and dragged Duke Dog away, at which point spectators could hear "Don't tase me, bro" pouring out from his giant head. At least, here's hoping that's all that was pouring out. From the Daily News Record:
Said Coastal freshman Andrew Moore: "He was belligerent. He was trying to get our mascot."
As the Duke Dog resisted, police dragged him off the field and into a stadium tunnel.
"They ripped off his head," JMU junior Brad Tephabock said. "They slammed him against the wall."
Then, according to the student paper, another Duke Dog reappeared, flipped off the Coastal Carolina bench and was also escorted away by security, who might as well provide four-man details for every college football fluffball from now on. The DNR, on the other hand, says in today's story that it was the same still-anonymous Duke Dog, who was removed by school officials and has since been fired. And ESPN.com is reporting that Surry County prosecutors are considering bringing charges against Chauncey for bodyslamming the helpless dog.
"It's just sad that the Duke Dog reacted in such a way," Paige Sumner, president of the Student Duke Club, whihc should absolutely be the first line on her resume, told the DNR. "It really made people think about Duke Dog's character."

People always are gunning for the top, and Duke Dog has been the best mascot in the country for nearly two decades. Those punks at VMI beat him up back in the mid-1990s -- not their mascot, the actual students attacked Duke Dog. But he keeps on keeping on.
He even got ripped off by Capital One a few years ago for the Mascot National championship after he went undefeated. Too many haters out there.

It should be noted - JMU won the game 45-10. But obviously the mascot fight was the real show! How long til it gets on ESPN.....

Supporters of mascots from the state of Virginia know the Capital One contest is a joke. We also know the Hokie Bird is the mascot of the Commonwealth. I had to put that Cavman or whatever it's called in its place a few years ago when it started to feel me before the 52-14 Hokie victory. I apologize to the children in the vicinity who heard and saw things they shouldn't have. At least the French head didn't come off and scare the kids after our brief exchange.

If you correct the spelling of Surry County now, I'll look dumb for this post and nobody will ever know you spelled it Surrey.
