From the FedEx Field Lots, Part I

The weather was fine, the grills were hot, the shots were cold, the pink jerseys were, um, pink, and the diehards were abundantly optimistic. And so, I bring you Scenes From the Tailgate: Attempting to argue, in seven parts, that NFL fans are, in many cases, clinically insane. In a good way. Note: if you're included in any of these items, I'm not talking about you. And by the way, D.C. was ranked 12th among the 31 NFL cities for tailgating prowess in a survey released today. Baltimore was first.

Part I: Marry Me Smooty

Pictured here is Ellen Price, a 26-year-old Redskins fan from McLean. She was at the game with her boyfriend, 28-year-old Evan Kay of Reston. She was also, as you can see, wearing a t-shirt that read "Marry Me Smooty." She made it herself on the Internet. Cost $25.

"Because I love him," she explained.

"As a player, she loves him," Evan interjected.

"I love him," Ellen insisted."

She ran into Smoot once at Bloomingdale's, tried to tell him how much she loved him, got all nervous and stuttery. Smoot rubbed her back and told her to calm down, saying "it's cool, baby, it's cool." Ellen's repeated the story so many times that "I know it back to front," Evan said.

I asked Evan if he felt funny seeing his girlfriend wearing a shirt that asked another man to marry her.

"It's all in good fun," Evan said. "They're not going to get married."

"Although if he were to propose to me, I might say yes," Ellen said.

"That's not true," Evan said, smiling.

"It's true," Ellen disagreed. "He can take me on a boat whenever he wants."

"I'm pretty sure she and I are going to get married before she and Smooty get married," Evan said, gamely.

For the record, I'm pretty sure Ellen was mostly joking. I think.

Dear Ellen;

Good luck with your boy Smooty!
Please do me a favor and next time you
run into him at Bloomingdales', tell him
to SHUT UP and play!
:)

"He can take me on a boat whenever he wants."

Ellen, do you know exactly what happens on a Fred Smoot boat trip? If the answer is yes, you could not be more admirable.
