Pecherov to Ukrainian Festival

The Syzokryli Dance Ensemble.

This weekend's Washington Ukrainian Festival (that's a PDF link) sounds like an incredible event on its own. I mean, any time you've got the Syzokryli Dance Ensemble, virtuoso violinist Vasyl Popadiuk, the Bandurna Rozmova duo, the Fantazia Dance Ensemble, the band Lvivyany plus the Sisters Oros dancers, you know things are gonna be pretty tight. Plus, it's in Silver Spring, and it's free. And did I mention the horses, for children? Or the Kozak Beer Garden, featuring Ukrainian beers and liqueurs? Or the Zabava dance in primetime?

But the organizers just took things up a notch. From the Wizards:

Washington Wizards forward Oleksiy Pecherov will be participating in the Washington Area Ukrainian Festival's opening ceremonies on 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at 15100 New Hampshire Ave in Silver Spring.

Pecherov will be joined in the opening ceremony by Archbishop Antony of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the United States and by the Honorable Oleh Shamshur, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States and other State and Local dignitaries.

It's hard to think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than eating borscht and pierogi, throwing back a few bottles of Slavutych Pyvo and listening to Ukrainian music in the company of Washington's newest basketball star. Only problem I can see is that this runs simultaneous with the USA Eagles' Rugby World Cup Opener.
