Who Is Mitch Levine?

Boomer's successor is named Mitch Levine.

After the great Maryland QB Exodus of '07, with two transfers and the mysterious academic-based loss of Josh Portis from what his mother described cheating on a pop quiz (there was no plagiarism or "premeditated cheating" because it was a pop quiz, she told the Balto Sun), the Terps are left with a walk-on fourth stringer. Named, you know, um, what's his name.

"I don't even know his name yet to be honest," Coach Ralph Friedgen told the Wash Times.

Clearly you wouldn't expect the Terps to burn through their first three QB's, but if they did and the mysterious Mr. Mitchell Benjamin Levine got the call, you'd think Disney might come calling, or at least the Washington Jewish Film Festival. I mean, this is a 5-foot-10 kid who a year ago was a third baseman for George Mason, and now he's three heartbeats away from inheriting the mantle of Frank Reich, Boomer Esiason and Joel Statham? Remarkable.

Culling through the WaPo archives, I found some Mitch Levine fun facts, after the jump:

Oct. 14, 2005: Magruder is 2-0 since senior QB Mitch Levine returned from a high ankle sprain he sustained during a season-opening loss to Quince Orchard. Levine passed for seven touchdowns and ran for another, as Magruder (3-2) averaged 51 points per game in wins over Blake and Walter Johnson.

"He brings another dimension to our offense that really helps us get going," said Magruder Coach Doug Miller, whose team faces Northwest (3-2) tonight. "We have a young line and all we could do was run the ball when he was out. We've got some receivers who can catch, and he can get the ball to them."...

Oct. 29, 2005: 5: Touchdown passes by Magruder QB Mitch Levine in a 40-28 win over Whitman. In four games since returning from an ankle injury he suffered during the season-opener against Quince Orchard, Levine has passed for 13 touchdowns and ran for another.

Nov. 1, 2005: The Colonels (5-3) are averaging 39.4 points during the past five games, a span in which Levine has thrown 13 touchdowns. With Levine out, Coach Doug Miller cut down the team's offensive play-calling by more than half, and opponents were loading up against the run.

"People have to play us straight up now," Miller said. "They have to respect his ability to throw the long ball and his firmness on screens. Teams can come after us but he's got such a quick release, he's going to get that pass off."

Nov. 3, 2005: At one point during the fourth quarter against Whitman on Friday night, Magruder senior quarterback Mitch Levine was flushed out of the pocket and back to his own 10-yard line. Before an oncoming rusher could so much as get a hand on him, though, Levine set his feet, threw across his body and hit receiver Tony Jackson at midfield for an 80-yard touchdown strike that caught his own coach by surprise.

"I didn't know he had that strong of an arm," Magruder Coach Doug Miller said. "But when you uncork the ball the width of the football field, that's saying something."

This is fantastic stuff about young Mr. Levine--but you may be making a dangerous assumption. As Rex Grossman constantly tells the media, looks and last name aside, he celebrates Christmas.
