Etan Thomas's Open Letter to Ivan Carter
[UPDATE: Sorry. Link here.]
Remember when Mister Irrelevant talked up D.C. sports media beefs last week? No end in sight. Luckily, no reporters seemed to have fought in the Redskins locker room yesterday (official motto: No Fight This Week!), but after Etan Thomas and Ivan Carter posted dueling blog-like items last week, Etan answered back today.
My own feeling: probably time to back off the dude that is recovering from open-heart surgery and let him have the final word. I get crabby when my tummy aches; if my torso was ripped open I would likely be even more difficult to deal with. Anyhow, here's what Etan said, in small part:
I know this guy, or at least I though I knew him and I refuse to believe that his heart is this cold, so I am going to attempt to clarify this for him and anyone else who doesn't understand why I would take issue with the coverage of this whole situation, then I'm going to leave it alone. I have too much to be thankful for and have spent too much time and energy on this already.
So hopefully this will be the final word for the time being, and we can all get back to what the Internet was really made for: taking cheap shots at Bostonians to cover up for our obvious feelings of athletic inadequacies on this day. More on that coming up!

So what did Etan say? A link? Or did he just send you a letter in the mail?

So, Etan doesn't like context. That is what I got from his most recent post on RealGM.com
Fair enough. Etan doesn't like nuance or a complicated narrative. Fair enough.

Ivan - please do not respond to Etan's letter.
Hopefully, if you ignore this matter and focus on more important basketball news, this problem will simply go away.

Ivan owns Etan in writing and reporting.
Seriously, how can anyone read that open letter and think of Etan seriously as a writer? He's awful. He's probably a better writer than I am a professional basketball player, true, but that's tunneling 400 feet beneath the surface of the earth to set the bar.

("than I would be a professional basketball player," I should say)

Well, that's what you get Ivan for putting Etan in the spotlight once again, for letting fans know about his ailment, and actually caring enough to write several columns on your blog about his heart problem.
Sheesh - If Ivan didn't write those article most of us Average
Joes out here wouldn't have even known or cared about Etan's heart problems in the first place!!!!

"complicated narrative"? cmon, etan doesn't like a simple narrative. that was such a dbagish reply from the worst "poet' since chairman mao, filled with more backhanded comliments then a southern matron. jeebus, dude's got the vapors (and still seems to lack basic reading comprehension skills). earth to etan, any heart condition is potentially career threatening for someone whose job requires serious cardio activity. that being said, this whole saga should definitely threaten his "career" as a writer and social commentator. how etan got a book deal but my barista can't is beyond me.

haha boston still sucks

Everyone is missing Etan's point. Etan is saying that he should be able to read an article, draw unreasonable inferences from that article, accuse the writer of intentionally trying to draw those unreasonable inferences, and call the writer "heartless" and other names without the writer taking an offense. Why can't you people understand this?

Now that I know he's going to be okay and his career won't be threatened, I'm back to hating Etan as a human being. Seriously.
Thanks for the post...

How dare Etan write this kind of stuff about Ivan? What if Ivan's family logged onto the Internet and saw this stuff? Their feewings might be hurt because of what Etan wrote. My hands are sore because of excessive wringing.

Etan is an idiot. It's his responsibility to inform his family of his medical issues. Not Ivan's.

I was leaning to Etan's side in the Etan/Brendan skirmishes but now after reading what he wrote to Ivan Carter I can see why somebody would want to take this chump's head off. I know he has a bad ticker and all but he needs to stop being a little punk b**ch and man up.

Sorry for his illness, but Thomas is a jerk and hasn't earned his money on the court for years. But he's always quick to spout off with his stupid opinions. Thomas, the Wizards don't need you back.

I'm shocked...shocked that Etan could find something that offended him.
Etan apparently doesn't know that Ivan doesn't write the "titles" to his articles that appear in the newspaper. The paper employs people who write the headlines.
I also disagree with Etan's central assertion here that Ivan compared Etan's ailment with those of other players, some of whom died. Ivan was clearly using those other players as examples of why (and how) NBA doctors have become more cautious with heart ailments in recent years. At no point did Ivan compare Etan's condition with those other guys.
