Smoot's Hamstring

I would so like to see Fred Smoot covering Mike Martz..

Well, here's what he said about whether his hamstring is ready:

"It has no other choice right now. Just going to put that car on the track and let it run."

This being Smoot, though, there was more. I was distracted by the baseball hat in his locker--a David and Goliath Tees trucker hat bearing the phrase "Mom says I ride on the short bus because I'm special." (Buy it here!)--but luckily my tape record was covering for me.

On Jon Kitna: "Point blank, he's having an arena football type season right now. You know, hey, that just proves to show that any quarterback with Mike Martz--taking nothing away from him, though, because I think Kitna does a great job with the offense--but anybody quarterbacking with Mike is gonna have a lot of yards."

On whether he worries about the tall Detroit receivers: "It's always the play calling. You know, I think a lot of people get it misconstrued about a corner worried about a wide receiver. It's NEVER the wide receiver you're worried about, it's the person throwing the ball. Because the wide receiver, he can only just run the route, catch the ball or get some yards after the catch. But it's all about Jon Kitna. It's all about Mike Martz. That's what corners worry about."

So WR height isn't a factor? "Of course it is."

But this is about Mike Martz? "Quarterbacks and coordinators. All right, let me tell you this: What makes Marvin Harrison different from Reggie Brown? Both of 'em fast, both of 'em can catch. Marvin Harrison know he gonna have 10 to 15 chances to catch balls this game; Reggie Brown don't know how many times McNabb gonna throw to him. THAT'S the difference. I know if I'm checking Marvin, I'm gonna have 15 shots, regardless if he open or if he not, that's who he going to. So that's the only difference, is some guys gonna get the balls, some guys not gonna get the balls."

So this is Fred Smoot vs. Mike Martz? "It's Fred Smoot vs. everybody that's got something to do with that offense, because if I can find out where he want that ball to go and get there first, it don't matter who trying to catch it."

That's actually some pretty astute commentary from Smoot. Excuse while I pass out....
