Local Hoops Poll Week Two: Virginia Rising

The historical records are a little spotty around Hoops Spectacular Poll HQ, but if I'm not mistaken this is a somewhat historic week for two area schools. UMBC is in the Atlantic 11! James Madison is in the Atlantic 11! Tell me they're not burning couches on those campuses this afternoon!
At the top, voters were left with a puzzle: how to handle Virginia's win at Arizona (the best by a local team this season) vis a vis Georgetown's lofty national ranking. Sixty-three voters handed their first-place tally to Georgetown; seven chose Virginia.
Poll movement: Virginia surges ahead of Maryland for the second spot. VCU's two losses costs the Rams two spots, allowing unbeaten GW and Virginia Tech to move up. Plus the three new additions at the bottom. Eight of our 27 MD/DC/VA teams remain undefeated; all eight show up in this weeks Atlantic 11.
The AP ranks 'em like this: Georgetown, Virginia, George Mason and Maryland (tied). The coaches rank 'em like this: Georgetown, Virginia, Old Dominion, George Mason, Maryland.
Results after the jump.
1. Georgetown (2-0) 691 (63)
--Wednesday at Ball State.
--Dear Hoyas, Wish you were here! Love, the BB&T Classic. (David Larimer)
2. Virginia (3-0) 608 (7)
--Tuesday vs. Drexel, Friday vs. Penn at the Palestra, Saturday vs. TBD.
--Sean Singletary scored 24 while battling the flu in upset over Arizona? Greivis Vasquez just called, asking if Sean can sneeze on him. (Paul Campbell)
3. Maryland (3-0) 506
--Tonight vs. UCLA in Kansas City, tomorrow vs. TBD, Friday vs. Lehigh.
--Just added Joe Harrington to the staff as an assistant coach. Apparently the Terps needed to work on throwing interceptions. (Gavin Weiss)
4. George Mason (3-0) 462
--Thursday vs. Kansas State in Orlando, Friday and Sunday vs. TBD.
--In semi-related news, the Patriots just scored again. (Sean Perkins)
5. George Washington (2-0) 364
--Saturday at No. 9 UMBC.
--Having beaten the Terriers with the Retrievers on deck, GW is right on track towards winning Westminster this year. (Max Wass)
6. Virginia Tech (1-0) 290
--Thursday vs. Eastern Washington in Anchorage, Friday and Saturday vs. TBD.
--Do Hokies eat turkey on Thanksgiving, or is that considered cannibalism? (Bill Fitzgerald)
7. VCU (2-2) 247
--Saturday vs. Elon.
--Miami= Football School. Arkansas=Football School. Pull yourself together. (Joshua Meredith)
8. Old Dominion (2-1) 189
--Tuesday vs. Iona, Friday at North Carolina
--Monarchs have back-to-games against North Carolina and Georgetown later this month. Funny, I didn't know the Marquis de Sade was in the scheduling business. (Bill Fitzgerald)
9. UMBC (3-0) 117
--Tuesday at Lafayette, Saturday vs. No. 5 GW.
--I'm pretty sure UMBC is a bank. (Markus Videnieks)
10. James Madison (2-0) 108
--Wednesday at unranked VMI, Saturday vs. unranked Mount St. Mary's.
--They scored 100 points against Siena, which beat Stanford. I'm pretty sure that equals 4,924 points against VMI. (Matt Bonesteel)
11. Loyola (3-1) 67
--Tuesday at Seton Hall, Friday vs. unranked Howard at the Palestra, Saturday vs. TBD.
--Came into the week as my #14, but was the only team not to lose to someone awful. Congratulations. (Jason Anderson)
Also receiving votes: Morgan State 32, Towson 21, American 20, Hampton 15, Coppin State 7, Norfolk State 6, William & Mary 5, VMI 1, Mount St. Mary's 1, Richmond 1, Maryland women 1, GW women 1, Navy football 1.

JMU is in. ... and I didn't even vote? Expect a jump after the holiday.
Posted by: John Taylor | November 19, 2007 5:52 PM
I feel so proud of my alma mater. Go UMBC! The only way they can make me happier now is if they lose 15 straight games again and be my choice of comedy every week for #10.

Come on Max Wass, you had the ball on the tee and the bat in your hands, yet you swing and miss.
You get the retrievers and terriers in the lead-in and the punchline is not Michael Vick???

GW - Will be interesting now that Travis King is out for the year.
Georgetown - If the Hoyas play ODU, why not GW?
Maryland - Play GW. Kudos for playing American though.
VTech - Wow, Elon.
Posted by: Andrew Wiseman | November 19, 2007 8:05 PM
1 = Virginia. While Maryland slumps along and Georgetown plays it (kind of) close with W&M, the Cavs already have a huge victory this year--how can you vote for anyone else?
Loyola - Mid-Major All-American Gerald Brown scores just 3 points, but the team still triumphs. Sign of good balance this year? Like PF Omari, this team is(for)real.
Posted by: DD | November 19, 2007 8:06 PM
Georgetown - Obviously the Lloyd Carr situation was a distraction for Michigan last week.
Virginia Tech - Not playing a game for two weeks (Nov. 9 - Nov. 22): the sign of a weak team or a clever ploy to inflate their bog poll ranking?
James Madison - They beat Siena which beat Stanford which beat USC (in football) which counts among its grads Carson Palmer who quarterbacks the Cincinnati Bengals who beat the Atlanta Falcons (in the preseason) who play their games in Georgia which is where peanuts come from which, when properly processed, make great peanut butter which goes best with tasty grape jelly the combination of which goes amazingly with cheap Wonder Breat which happens to be sliced. Therefore, JMU is better than sliced bread.
UMBC - There's nothing in the rules that says a dog can't make the Bog Poll!
Posted by: Chris Olson | November 19, 2007 8:07 PM
Georgetown - I'm convinced all of Patrick Ewing Jr.'s points this year will come off layups and dunks. ... And fist-pumping.
Virginia - If you can beat Howard by 39 points, you deserve to be #2 in this poll. ... That meager 3 pt win against a ranked Arizona though is a demerit in my book.
Maryland - After needing an extra frame to defeat supposedly over-matched Northeastern, it's clear that the Terps cannot withstand injuries to star players such as Dave Neal and Jerome Burney. Or maybe they're just terrible.
George Mason - You can only hope to contain the man-beast that is Vlad Moldoveanu
VCU - Is it a bad omen if the Rams can't stop a guy named Sonny Weems?
UMBC - Congratulations to UMBC, which is leading the American East for the first time ever with a 3-0 record. ... Though barely squeaking out victories against Richmond and St. Peter's cannot be a good sign for things to come.
Posted by: Ian Oland | November 19, 2007 8:08 PM
Georgetown - Still #1 by virtue of a drubbing of Michigan. Since Ball State only has a handful of eligible players and none over 6'5", I'm going out on a limb and predicting that last man off the bench Bryon Jansen scores 15 on Wednesday. Nikita Mescheriakov might pour in 10, and he's not even eligible.
Maryland - 3-0 with two close games against a schedule that boasts an average 06-07 RPI of 245. This isn't exactly Notre Dame-beating-Duke territory, but still, not an impressive start.
George Mason - Beat Cleveland State and Dayton? The Patriots own middle-tier Ohio schools.
VCU - Major conference opponent or not, losing is losing, and the Rams did it twice last week.
GW - A 13-point win over an America East opponent followed by Karl Hobbs lecturing the Colonial Army on cheering with class? That's midseason form in Foggy Bottom.
Virginia Tech - They must have figured out how to move up in the rankings by looking at ODU and VCU: You can't lose if you don't play.
Old Dominion - Iona sandwiched between games against Clemson, UNC, and Georgetown? Does it count as a trap game if you lose the games surrounding it?
Posted by: Paul Campbell | November 19, 2007 8:10 PM
Maryland - The cute "Pick Your Poison" T-Shirts sold during the 2001-2002 academic year with Testudo spinning a football on one finger and a basketball on the other finger are now as out-of-date as 8-tracks.
UMBC - In an effort to increase the credibility of this poll, the 3-0 Retrievers get some respect after beating Richmond.
VCU - Gotta give them respect for finishing fourth in the Puerto Rico Tournament sponsored by the Big East Conference. BTW, the Big East Announced that they're expanding again by adding the University of South Beijing and University of East Tokyo in order to create a Big East Football Conference Championship game because the ACC's Championship Game has so successful.

UVA - Most impressive win of the Top 3 (on the road against 'Zona) moves them from #3 to #1 in my book.
G'Town - Dec 1st battle with Fairfield coming up. Fairfield is 2-0 in their last two games after beating ranked (at least in our poll) American.
UMD/V-Tech - Win against Hampton at home about as unimpressive a win as possible, until someone comes along and only beats Elon by 5 at home.
VCU - Nothing like getting to play Elon after two straight power conference teams.
All the rest of the teams should be tied for 10th.
Posted by: Todd Turner | November 19, 2007 8:12 PM
Georgetown - No trouble with Michigan, which can't seem to win in any sport these days.
Virginia - If you beat Arizona, you should be ranked higher than Maryland (PS: Sean Singletary is the next Cory Alexander.)
Maryland - Trouble with Hampton and Northeastern = No chance vs UCLA.
George Mason - The little commuter school that could.
Virginia Tech - I forgot they had a team since they haven't played in two weeks.
James Madison - Also known as George Mason of the mountains.
George Washington - Who would have thought a tough game for GW would be against UMBC?
UMBC - Proving there is more than one way for Maryland Athletics to be just above average.
Morgan State - Close loss to UConn hurts, but any team with a guy named Boubacar stands a chance against anyone.
Loyola (MD) - After loss to Towson the 'hounds have been on fire.
Posted by: Chimpanzee Rage | November 19, 2007 8:13 PM
Georgetown - The Hoya D held Michigan to 37% shooting on the day, 5% better than Michigan's QBs fared against Ohio State.
UVA - Impressive win over Arizona, despite not having anyone named Jason-Priestly or Ian-Ziering to stop Zona freshman Laval Lucas-Perry.
George Mason - Mason's Will Thomas is taller, more masculine, than Channel 5's Will Thomas.
Maryland - Scary thought: as freshmen, Travis Garrison and Ekene Ibekwe displayed much more ability than any of Maryland's freshman bigs have so far this year.
GW - 10 days off between games two and three for the Colonials. Did they get a group rate for plastic surgery?
VCU - Forward Larry Sanders is destined to quietly play four years and only be appreciated once he's gone.
VT - Their next game starts at 1:45 AM. If Beamer had controlled his players' nightlives like this, Marcus Vick might have graduated.
ODU - ODU's loss to Clemson shows that unlike the colonization of India, sometimes Tigers can defeat Monarchs.
Morgan State - After their close loss to UCONN, it's ironic to note that Coach Todd Bozeman was fired from Cal for paying a recruit, whereas Jim Calhoun has been deified for a legacy built on bought players.
Posted by: Markus Videnieks | November 19, 2007 8:14 PM
Hampton - Nearly beats Maryland, gets blown out by Kent State. MAC > ACC?
Virginia - Best team with a guy named Laurynas Mikalauskas in Local Poll history
Georgetown - Michigan must have confused Georgetown's gray unis for Ohio State
No. 8 = Puerto Rico - VCU loses twice in Puerto Rico Shootout, one year after Virginia did the same.
Posted by: DBK Alum | November 19, 2007 8:16 PM
Georgetown - with Jeremiah Rivers' first 3 pointer of the year, the flood gates have just opened. Truly a watershed moment for his Sophomore year. H20 snap!!!
Virgina - Coach Dave Leitao celebrated their big win over 'Zona by handing out Lute bags filled with candy and other goodies.
Maryland - Landon Milbourne could be the coolest name since 'Spies Like Us's Austin Millbarge and/or Emmett Fitz-Hume.
George Mason - First 3-0 start since the Iran hostage crisis.
Virginia Tech - Hoping 13 day layoff won't be unlucky.
George Washington - Their ninth straight against victory vs BU earns them the nickname 'Terrierists.'
James Madison - They're in an Ivy League of their own.
Old Dominion - Loss to Clemson was only a warm-up for their future loss to UNC.
UMBC - These Retrievers are more golden than a pond where the Fondas hang out.
Loyola - Omari Isreal is for real. No word on if he supports Israel.
Posted by: Thigh Master | November 19, 2007 8:17 PM
Maryland - Coach Gary better break out speech number 84 tonight.
GW - ESPN recently listed the Colonials transfer star SF as Wynton Witherpoon instead of Witherspoon, yet had no problems airing a 7 minute video on Nana Papa Yaw Mensah-Bonsu.
Loyola - I know one thing for sure: I'm not voting for Richmond this week.
Posted by: Sean Perkins | November 19, 2007 8:18 PM
Georgetown - The Hoyas will be featured as a villainous traveling basketball team in the next "Wolverine" comic book installment.
Virginia - What we thought Maryland would look like.
Maryland - What we knew Maryland would look like.
George Mason - Desperately wishing they had VCU's place in this year's BB&T Classic.
UMBC - Got the Steinberg memo about Richmond.
GW - If two wins doesn't convince you, maybe Coach Hobbs' blog will.
James Madison - JMU basketball is to the CAA as James Madison was to the Constitution.
Virginia Tech - Should have Jeff Probst doing color commentary for their next game.
Loyola - The Greyhounds show Vermont that real Evergreens live on N. Charles St.
Morgan State - The only 'Bears' in sports that isn't a complete disappointment.
Old Dominion - Because the Lion King was a much better movie than '300.'
Liberty - Can't relate to Tupac's 'California Love.' And not just in the way you're thinking.
VCU - Two consecutive losses for the magicians of March.
Posted by: ScottVanPeltStyle.com | November 19, 2007 8:20 PM
Georgetown - A #1 vote in this poll that isn't for Georgetown should result in banishment. Not from the poll, mind you, but from the entire region.
Virginia- Trying to bamboozle another set of Cavaliers by switching Singletary for LeBron.
Maryland - Boom Osby has run out of money on his campus account and now eats bricks and chunks of metal for nutrition.
George Mason - Mason hosts and crushes Ohio's lesser lights; here they come, Final Four! (note: Final Four of the CAA tournament).
VCU - Take that, Phi Slamma Jamma! Wait, they're gone? That's a shame.
GW - The New England sports scene will never recover from GW's big win over Boston U.
ODU - Held Toledo to 35 points. Are our local colleges trying to take down the state of Ohio?
Va. Tech - No games, which I feel should be punished, but failure below saves them.
Morgan State - See above, basically. Still, one should always remember not to f' wit' them.
Posted by: Jason Anderson | November 19, 2007 8:21 PM
Georgetown - Not even a pregame pep talk from Patrick Swayze could help the Wolverines beat the Hoyas.
Virginia - Cavaliers were white-hot from three-point range to start their game against Arizona, but since the game was in Tucson, it's a dry heat.
Maryland - Greivis Vasquez now has 28 wins as a Terrapin, only 5,203 fewer than Hall of Fame jockey Jacinto Vasquez.
George Mason - World Ball was a huge success except for the Dayton team, which was unable to locate the country where the basket resides.
GW - Alert the national media, a Boston area sports team lost a game.
VCU - Phi Slamma Jamma, Tom Penders? I don't think so. More like Lambda Lambda Lambda.
UMBC - Three wins in one week, and for once, we're not talking about the chess team.
James Madison - Over/under for the Dukes' game at VMI this week is higher than the projected attendance.
Posted by: Bill Fitzgerald | November 19, 2007 8:23 PM
Maryland - Breaking News: Gary Williams resigns to spend more time at Bentley's.
Virginia - True or False: Hickory High in Hoosiers had more jumpshots in the entire movie than Virginia did against Arizona.
Loyola - Jimmy Patsos wins the "I got my feelings hurt by Gary Williams" game against Mike Lonergan and Vermont.
Posted by: Matt H | November 19, 2007 8:24 PM
Georgetown - For Wednesday's game against Ball State, John Thompson III has invited Bill Belichick to join him on the bench.
Virginia - After a football season of narrow victories, Virginia fans were very pleased with Saturday's 75-72 blowout win over Arizona.
Maryland - Overtime win over Northeastern leaves poor, downtrodden Boston sports fans with nothing to celebrate.
Posted by: Eric Swensen | November 19, 2007 8:25 PM
Georgetown - Overheard at the Verizon Center on Thursday: "So are the Hoyas really this good, or is Michigan just a huge #%@#$@# pile of %!?"
Virginia - Saturday's 15-point performance cements J.J. The Player's spot ahead of J.J. The Coach's in this week's Atlantic 11 Local Jeff Jones Poll.
George Mason - After Patriots moved to 3-0 with a victory on "Coach L's World Ball Night," even Miss Teen South Carolina can locate George Mason on a map.
George Washington - Colonials did their part to expedite Boston's fall from Sports Mecca status.
Maryland - A win is a win is a win - except when it's against Northeastern, in overtime, at home.
VCU - Arkansas fan at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, eager to get on TV, held a sign that read: E leven in S teinberg's P oll N ow?
Virginia Tech - Pierson Prioleau had planned to support the Hokies at the Great Alaska Shootout, but he was later getting to the airport than he was to Terrell Owens.
Old Dominion - Can we blame Reed Doughty for Clemson's decisive 24-4 run?
Loyola - ESPN.com's fantasy pundits to feature Omari Isreal in this week's "Are You For Real?" column.
James Madison - The Dukes smoked Siena, which handled Stanford. Is it too early to talk about the possibility of an undefeated season?
Posted by: Scott Allen | November 19, 2007 9:18 PM
Georgetown- In a show of solidarity with the striking tv writers, I'll refrain from any pithy comments about Georgetown's weak schedule or how much the Post hates them.
Maryland - Opened with four straight home games. Only Benazir Bhutto has spent more time at home.
Posted by: Matt Mandel | November 19, 2007 9:19 PM
Potomac State - Because betting with strippers is always a roaringly inferno of a good time, especially at Good Guys. We need to find out what the bet was that led to last week's voting in of this renowned institution of higher learning. Potomac State will be in my poll every week until we learn what the bet was.
Maryland - Over/Under until Diamondback drops the headline to accompany a picture of an Osby dunk with "Boom goes the Dynamite" is now at 30.5.
Posted by: DC Centurion's Shield | November 19, 2007 9:20 PM
Georgetown - Despite beating Michigan, JTIII overheard blaming the Post for them not beating Michigan by more.
UMD- Maryland clearly challenging GW for title of "Most Overrated Local Team"
ODU - Preparing for a "tough" battle against 0-2 Iona Gaels.
GW - Two "Quality" wins over BU and Mt. St. Marys. No the Colonials aren't overrated.
VCU - Despite 2-2 record still middle of the pack in CAA. Worst team in the CAA held by none other than local team William and Mary.
Loyola - I'm voting them here for the simple fact that they play Siena twice and Siena beat Stanford. That and I am a MAAC Homer.
VT - One win will only take you so far, and apparently that is to the bottom half of a local team poll that features such prestigious programs as American, and William & Mary.
Posted by: Killian the Iona Gael | November 19, 2007 9:22 PM
VCU - Sure, they're 2-2, but they've already played a tougher schedule than most contenders for the BCS Championship.
George Mason - I think teams are starting to get an answer to the age-old question, "What's a Folarin?"
Virginia - Sean Singletary scores 24 while suffering from the flu. Kirk Gibson reportedly not impressed.
Towson - The Battle for Charm City is on. UMBC, you better be careful. Tigers probably eat Retrievers.
Virginia Tech - Fun VT-was-idle-so-no-new-info Hokie fact: Virginia Tech's intramural program includes team darts, chess, and a hearts tournament. Apparently freshman Jeff Allen shot the moon once.
Posted by: Gavin Weiss | November 19, 2007 9:22 PM
Georgetown - If Loyola can open with Towson every year, home and home, why can't G'town and UMD open every year, home and home?
UVA - Hoops team hopes they beat Miami by as much as the football team did.
VA Tech - Hoops team hopes they beat Miami by as much as the football team did.
UMD - If Maryland basketball was to become the UCLA of the east, UCLA football has become the Maryland of the west.
GW - Men's team is mediocore but the Women's team is hott; however co-ed students didn't come off too well in Post article on local college fashion scene.
GMU - The fact student fashion at Mason wasn't mentioned probably tells you something about fashion there.
JMU - Undefeated, .7344 RPI, pretty soon people won't care about the football team making the championship tournament.
UMBC - Wait till the Chess Team hears about this ranking.
ODU - Best thing to happen to Norfolk since National Hurricane Center missed its prediction of this year's hurricane season.
Towson - Still haunted by the Ghost of Seasons Past from the Patriot League.
Howard - Almost made it, especially after co-ed fashionistas featured in Post article made other local schools look like the slobs they are.
Posted by: Dave Richardson | November 19, 2007 9:24 PM
Georgetown - Hoyas fans blame 22-point margin of victory over Michigan on The Post, claim paper would have given Maryland a 44-point win.
Virginia - Cavs add to Lute Olson's "personal problem."
George Mason - Thank you, Patriots. Most Dayton fans are jack[xxxxx].
George Washington - Because Maryland-College Park is terrified to play them, Colonials will take it out on Maryland-Baltimore County.
Maryland - After squeaking out win over the UCLA of the Back Bay, Terps prepare to get smoked by the actual UCLA.
Virginia Tech - God willing, Thursday's 1:45 a.m. game against Eastern Washington in Great Alaska Shootout will slaughter the MLS Cup in TV ratings.
VCU - Eric Maynor could use a hand, or at least a hug.
ODU - Loss to Clemson featured 15 lead changes. Few of them were during decisive 24-4 Clemson run.
UMBC - Retrievers own the Atlantic 10. Until they play GW.
Howard - What's more shocking? Jets over Steelers or Howard over Penn?
Posted by: Matt Bonesteel | November 19, 2007 9:26 PM
Virginia - Is it just me, or do the Cavs have an eyebrow-raising win at Arizona every year? Is the ACC expanding again, or do they play in some sort of Shadow BB&T?
VCU - Two losses, but neither of them bad, especially now that it appears Miami is beating teams other than Maryland.
Virginia Tech - The Hokies have 13 days off between their first and second games. This will make sense if, and only if, Seth Greenberg shows up in Anchorage with a full head of hair.
UMBC - A stretch of four games out of five vs. Bog 11-eligible teams. Is their travel budget on Zipcard?
Posted by: David Larimer | November 19, 2007 9:27 PM
UVA - Top A11 victory yet gives them the bump up.
UMD - A victory over UCLA might give them the best victory of the entire A11 season. Four key doesn't work.
UMBC - Welcome to the A11, let's see how long you can last. 10.
JMU - With no basketball highlights available on the school website, I am unable to evaluate the quality of this team but because they are still undefeated, I feel forced to give their A11 due.
Posted by: Danny Everett | November 19, 2007 9:28 PM
Georgetown - It's only a matter of time before the Portland Trailblazers ask for Hibbert on loan to replace Oden for the year.
Virginia - Hasn't Dave Leitao learned anything from Al Groh? He's supposed to lose an early-season non-conference game to lower expectations, not pull off a big upset.
Maryland - Continuing the tradition of being not as good as you think since 2003.
George Mason - So when can we start calling the Patriot Center the Masonic Temple?
George Washington - Wins over Boston U and Mount St. Mary's? That's why they call Karl Hobbs Mr. November.
Virginia Tech - Beat Elon, which is apparently the online branch of esteemed Lon University.
Old Dominion - I just hope the French-Canadian guard and Tasmanian center are roommates and will agree to star in a reality show together.
VCU - Best two-loss team south of the (George) Mason-(Juan) Dixon line.
UMBC - Early appearance at the bottom of the poll puts the Retrievers in position to be this year's American.
James Madison - Best team in the NCAA that wears purple unis.
Posted by: Sean McLernon | November 19, 2007 9:30 PM
JMU - That win over Siena looks a lot more impressive now.
Maryland - It would've been embarrassing to go into OT against Northwestern. Against Northeastern?! That's just pathetic.
VT - They didn't play this week which means they didn't have a chance to lose or embarrass themselves like most of the other teams.
GW - I loved how Karl Hobbs told the GW students to be more classy after the BU game.
Virginia - Mercer over USC, Siena over Stanford, Virginia over Arizona. Pac10 ranked teams are dropping like flies.
Posted by: Peter Keszler | November 19, 2007 9:31 PM
Virginia - Cavs slay the Cats... Coach Leitao keeps it clean.
Georgetown - Coach Beilein was seen frantically searching for the next Pittsnogle in the tunnel before the game with the Hoyas... wolverines came out looking like they had been wounded by mountaineers before tip-off.
Maryland - Wake me up when they start conference play.
George Mason - Republicans seek advice from patriots on how to be successful in ohio.
GW - PETA is investigating reports of the Colonials inflicting cruelty on the Terriers... the initial investigation has proven inconclusive.
VCU - Loss to the Hogs leads Anthony Grant to throw another dart in the poster of Billy Donovan on his wall.
Posted by: Nathan Fennessy | November 19, 2007 9:32 PM
Virginia - Defeating Arizona, finally allows me to show my true anti-Hoya colors by voting the Cavaliers into the No.1 spot.
Georgetown - I mean seriously is there a bigger "I am going to crush" you game on the docket for the entire season than the Hoyas v. Ball State game this week? I think not.
George Mason - Beating the Flyers; where have I seen this before? Oh right from those underachievers in the district. Anyways thank George Mason for continuing to ruin the A-10's out-of-conference RPI.
Maryland - Gary Williams using the Jim Morea voice: "Graduation!?!? Graduation?!?!" (weird head nod), "I am just trying to win games here"....if you need OT to finish off Northeastern you deserve to fall in this poll.
GW - Got to beat those hockey schools (Boston U.) before the weather gets colder.
Va Tech - "You play to win the games!" Well unless you don't play.
UMBC - You clearly get my vote when you're 3-0 and have two wins against A-10 schools including Richmond. Overachievers of the first three weeks of the season. GW v. UMBC on Saturday...Can You Feel the Hype?
Posted by: Joshua Meredith | November 19, 2007 9:35 PM
Maryland - If they need overtime to beat Northeastern, they're going to have a lot of trouble winning the CAA this year. Oh, they're in the ACC? O.K., they're screwed.
James Madison - By the law of victory replacement, the Dukes should be the 20th ranked team in the nation via Siena's upset of Stanford.
Virginia Tech - They really needed those two weeks off to prepare for the powerhouse that is Eastern Washington.
Georgetown - After he graduates, Nikita Mescheriakov should team up with his brother, GW great Yegor Mescheriakov, and tour Eastern Europe taking on all challengers in pickup games of two-on-two. "From Mescheriakov to Mescheriakov" coming soon to Versus.
Virginia - From his bunker somewhere in the Canadian wilderness, Lute Olson shuddered.
Morgan State - If they want to bring more funds to the athletic program, they should become Captain Morgan State.
George Mason - It's always fun to go to the Patriot Center. Of course, I've only been there to see David Copperfield.
Richmond - Wes Unseld thinks that the Big Sky conference should send Weber State to the A-10 for Richmond.

Oh, so this is what the new expanded pith comment section looks like.
I say Matt Mandel wins for the Bhutto comment, but then again, I'm a huge nerd.
Posted by: Paul Campbell | November 19, 2007 9:45 PM
Considerable improvement amongst the pollsters, but they are still putting teams with a loss ahead of undefeateds?
Looks like that Richmond Spider bite hasn't healed up yet.
Posted by: ScottVanPeltStyle.com | November 19, 2007 10:05 PM
Michael Vick? The name sounds familiar. Didn't he play football or something? Rugby maybe?
Posted by: Max Wass | November 19, 2007 11:34 PM
Stein,
Love the new format for the pith; now that I've seen what I'm up against to quote from that young lady from Howard last week, "I'm going to have to step my game up".
Posted by: Dave Richardson | November 20, 2007 7:23 AM
Seriously, dropping the ball on the potential Vick punchline is almost criminal.
It's interesting to see what doesn't get in -- lots of really good stuff on the sidelines.
Posted by: Markus V. | November 20, 2007 10:20 AM
Hey, you didn't come up with it either. In fact, nobody did. So stop giving others advice.

"GW - A 13-point win over an America East opponent followed by Karl Hobbs lecturing the Colonial Army on cheering with class? That's midseason form in Foggy Bottom."
No, mid-season form is leaving at halftime with class when getting drilled by Xavier.

After last night, does Maryland actually look like an ACC team?

great game against Ball State georgetown
looks like 7 voters new better than the other 63, now if we could just figure out why people think they even deserve to be second in this poll
Ball State just exposed georgetown for what they are, an overrated team that is propped up by weak schedules and a sympathetic media. If georgetown was in the ACC (and apparently in the MAC as well) instead of the Big Least they would be lucky to finish .500 in the conference.
