More Mascots Get Bar Mitzvahs

Yesterday I noted briefly the rapidly approaching Bar Mitzvah of Maryland mascot Testudo. Naturally, several e-mailers immediately pointed out that they, too, had been involved in the Bar Mitzvahs of other mascots, but within and without the ACC. In the interest of historical accuracy, then....

In the fall of 2004, Syracuse's Otto the Orange was Bar Mitzvahed. " 'Otto came and tore down the house,' said Jacob Perlin, communications vice president for Hillel. 'He came in dancing and everyone went crazy.'...Shortly after Otto entered and danced the horah, about six male party-goers hoisted Syracuse's favorite mascot into the air."

In March of 2006, UNC's Ramses was Bar Mitzvahed. "A blown up image of Ramses was covered by guests with the signatures and words of good luck such as 'Rock on Ramses'."

That fall, Miami's Sebastian the Ibis was Bar Mitzvahed. "The party lasted three hours, but Sebastian did not read from the Torah, the Jewish Holy Scripture....One thing no one was sure of was whether Sebastian actually was a member of the Jewish faith. "Everyone keeps being like, 'Since when is Sebastian Jewish?' and he's not actually," said Amanda Carlow, a sophomore and volunteer at social events for Hillel."

[That event was later covered by SI.com, Just Call Me Juice and Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician.]

In September of this year, Central Florida's Knightro was Bar Mitzvahed. "Knightro, UCF's beloved mascot, was lifted high in a chair as hundreds of students danced the Horah at the Fairwinds Alumni Center on Saturday.... Knightro declined to comment for this story; though, his animation and excitement throughout the evening said it all."

Finally, Wisconsin mascot Bucky the Badger has a Bar Mitzvah just about every year. Heck, there are even official t-shirts. . Here's a program description. "We gave out glow sticks, served Bar Mitzvah cake, and most importantly, lifted our mascot Bucky, who made an exciting hour-long appearance, on a chair."

UPDATE: Storming the Floor rules out certain future mascot Bar Mitzvahs (Arkansas Razorback, made of pork), and the wondrous ACC Now is proud of the ACC leading the nation.
