Redskins Bonus Quotes: No Ugly Wins

Football players, fighting hard (John McDonnell - TWP).

Actually, here's my favorite quote of the day, from Anonymous New Jersey-based Redskins Fan, standing behind one end zone and screaming at every Redskins person as they emerged from the tunnel. Despite a long conversation, I never got his name, but here's what he said to Al Saunders:

"Coach, please open it up, PLEASE. Santana Moss on the fly. Do SOMETHING."

And here's what a laughing Saunders said back to him:

"You know what, you're right."

And here's how long Jason Campbell's longest completion was yesterday: 21 yards, to a tight end.

Also, if you're sitting in the box all day calling the plays, as Saunders does, do you really need to shower after the game? I mean, I don't begrudge anyone a nice hot shower, but I don't see why the assistant associate emeritus head coach-offense needs a shower after a game any more than, say, Mike Wise. Actually, having sat next to Wise, I'm willing to bet Saunders needed the shower less.

Bonus quotes:

Chris Samuels: "It's never easy on this level. A lot of great teams around here. Every week it's going to be a tough battle. We wish we could blow teams out, but we'll just take the 'W' right now."

By "a lot of great teams around here," I'm going to assume he was not including the Jets.

Fred Smoot: "More or less, for us, we had to win this game. After coming out last week, we had to win....I don't care if they were 7-1 and we lost to them, point-blank, it would have put the Redskins in a bad position with us losing the game. So it's not about them being 1-7, because believe me, they're probably seven plays from being 6-2. Every team they've taken to the end, and they play good football."

I'll let that "good football" thing slide, and just state, point blank, that Fred Smoot says "point blank" more than anyone I've ever met in my life.

Joe Gibbs, on whether the game was perhaps of the hard-fought variety: "It was an extremely hard-fought game. For the Jets, with all that's happened to them this year, they fought very hard in the game....I'm just thankful that our players stepped up the way they did and played hard today....I can't say enough about our team and the way we fought today."

Wow, shocking. Did anyone fight their guts out?

Joe Gibbs: [Kellen Clemens] "played his guts out today."

More after the jump.

Gibbs, on the onside kick and the running game, respectively: "We worked extremely hard on it," and "we work extremely hard on our run game."

Good, good. Extremely good.

Pete Kendall on facing the team that just traded him: "I don't think it was a question of whether or not the organization felt I could still play or could contribute to the team. So I didn't feel like I had to go out there and prove I can play. Let me put it this way, I didn't get released. They made a decision that they got equal or better value in return for moving me along, and that's fine."

Ha. Ok. We still don't believe you.

Rock Cartwright on skating so close to a loss: "That wasn't even in my mind. But if we lost, that probably would have been bad. We probably would have been the laughingstock of the NFL, considering we got blown out last week against New England. But we stuck it out for five quarters, so it just feels good to come out on top. In this league, it doesn't matter how you get it, as long as you win."

Although the Las Vegas Oddsmakers Power Rankings sure consider how you get it.

Rock Cartwright, further explaining himself: "Oh yeah, a win is a win. It doesn't matter how you get it. It goes on the board as a 'W.' If it was 2-0, if we just got a safety, it doesn't matter, it's a win. It's hard to win in this league, because everybody's good."

Um, except the Dolphins.

Rock Cartwright on the defense: "We had faith in our defense. That's what you call trusting each other. We trust each other like a tight family group here."

Except B-Lloyd. We're divorcing him.

Chris Wilson on what a loss would have meant: "We would have lost a lot of momentum. You need momentum...I'm not going to wear this tie."

Why, you don't know how to tie it? "Oh, just for you. Now you've called me out. No mirror baby."

Cornelius Griffin: "There's guys on this team that don't know how to tie a tie. I ain't gonna call them out."

Wilson: "Watch me now, don't need no mirror, no re-dos or nothing. Almost done. Wearing it a little higher than normal, because I'm gonna throw a sweater over it."

Griffin, back on message: "If we're 4-4, we're .500, we'll most likely be 8-8, maybe 9-7. It takes two games to climb out of that hole. Right now we're still two ahead of the count."

Pierson Prioleau on being upset with ugly wins: "No way at all. You know what man, I'll cut to the point. There's no such thing as an ugly win in the NFL. Because at the end of the season, when they start tallying up the victories and going through the numbers to see who goes on to play in the playoffs, they don't look at how you won the games. Of course there's things that we know we can improve on: you never play a perfect game, you never play the game that you actually want to play. But ultimately, the goal is to walk out of here victorious."

Maybe, but that was still an ugly win.

Prioleau: "I mean, it's football. We're grown men, they're grown men, we come out, we play the game and we have fun. There's no ugly wins.

Fine, fine, fine, no ugly wins.

Dan Snyder institutes a bow-ties only rule in 5...4...3...2...

Don't hate on the Dolphins. I'm waiting for that miraculous eight-game streak.

Besides, we're a second half team anyway...

Thanks Dan. Love the inside stuff you won't find on the official Redskins website, official Redskins messageboard, unofficial official newspaper of the Redskins, or the unofficial official "insider" coverage of the newspaper of the Redskins.

DON'T LISTEN TO THIS MAN. AS BRIAN MITCHELL SAID ONCE, HE'S LIVING SOMEWHERE BEYOND REALITY.

My name is Andre and I am really happy coach Saunders didnt forget me when he called Cooleys number on that 8 yard pass that went for 21 BIG ONES and dont forget he also allowed Jason to overthrow Santana for the fifth time this season way to go coach.Anyway maybe I will see you on December 16 when we try to become New York State Champs with a Meadowlands sweep over the Giants. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!!!!

It is sickening what the skins are doing this year. The fact that, they have had the lead in all games but 2, in the 4th quarter, is what makes me disgusted.

It isn't Gibbs. If they can lead for 3 quarters, then something must be working, right?

Skins a bit unconfident, gun shy, not really believing they could actually win?

They have to get over this low football esteem and start kicking some booty again.
