DeShawn Posterizes Jefferson

(AP Photo)

So many post-game notes, this will have to be Part I.

1) Bullets Forever beat me to this by a few minutes, but that DeShawn Stevenson dunk last night was pretty disgusting. Or putrid. Or nasty-filthy. Or sickening. Or nauseating. Or whatever "bad-in-a-good-way" word is currently en vogue. Despite a post-dunk technical for taunting, it led to a 28-14 Wiz run that led some to suggest that DeShawn actually jumping was a turning point in the game.

"I hate to see the taunting, but maybe it was," said Eddie "Grandpa" Jordan.

2) And of course, the Rooks had something to say about DeShawn leaving the ground.

"That's the best dunk I've ever seen DeShawn do," Nick Young said. "That's the best play I've ever seen DeShawn do, in his life."

3) I also asked the Rooks about the celebration.

"It was appropriate," Dominic McGuire said. "You've got to stare somebody down after you dunk on them like that. You've got to stare at them like that."

"It was appropriate, but it wasn't a normal DeShawn Stevenson celebration," Young said. "He didn't throw me off with the celebration; I was expecting a little more out of him, because he's more of a Hollywood guy. So it should have been more big-time."

"I'm Hollywood?" Stevenson asked.

"That's what I'm saying, you're more of a Hollywood-type guy," Young confirmed. "If you would have dunked, I thought you would have supermanned that [you know], I was expecting all that," and then Young demonstrated such a supermanning.

4) Speaking of celebrations, on the next possession, Stevenson hit a three-pointer and then couldn't feel his face for a very long time. One of the longer hand waggles you'll see. Surprised that didn't deserve a tech. But more interestingly, earlier in the game Stevenson had made a layup-and-one, and kept kissing his biceps.

"You know what, I usually don't lift before the games, but today I lifted," he explained. "So I went in there and kissed em, you know, just like that," and then he kissed his arms again, for reporters to see.

5) Speaking of celebrations, I asked DeShawn about his promise to find a new celebration besides the hand waggle, something different and unique.

"Yeah, it was a good game though," he said. "You know what, I was at Cheesecake the other day and the guy who brought my food at Cheesecake said, 'DeShawn, why you don't do this any more,' [while demonstrating the move]. I said, 'Nah, I think it's kind of played.' He was like, 'Man, everybody loves it, you've got to go back to doing it.' And if it does give me an identity on this team and with the fans, why not?"

Sure, I guess, but I'm not sure how I feel about Cheesecake Factory employees deciding on Wiz team celebrations.

hey Steinz

Great post but

What's with the big words - what the heck does "posterize" mean?

the last time he dunked like that (a few years ago when he was on orlando) on gerald wallace, he did the same exact celebration AND also got a tech...

I'd love to see someone do a 'superman' after a facial dunk, would be so awesome lol

Posted by: dunker | December 10, 2007 1:24 PM

the dunk woke everyone up, but deshawn (and caron?) got eaten by vince carter's double teamed rainbow 3 from 26 feet as the shot clock flashed 2. good times all around. and what's up with all the "quality" free stuff from last night? gil's home swingman jerseys were being given away for FREE last night (retails for $85-95; all jersey prices went up this season). lower level tickets were being given away too. the wiz dancers took the night off (too risque for kids day, i guess). one final thing - the kid announcer for the wiz intros said antawn jamison is 6-7. i had to chuckle for that one.

I love Deshawn's energy, I hope he can keep his confidence up because he's a tough dude.

On Friday I threw down my Long Island Iced Tea, then supermanned at the bar...I definitely couldn't feel my face.

I don't know if DeShawn's dunk helped the team get back into it, but it helped DeShawn. He made a great 3-point shot shortly thereafter.

DeShawn should stick with the hand waggle. We're used to it. We're NBA fans here -- we don't like our players comming and going and changing all the time like college ball. I'm used to it and it's familiar. Keep it DeShawn!

Nick Young's vlog with McGuire is hilarious and encourages those 2 squirts to taunt the veterans a little. Still, they should be careful.

Hey, I think it's great that on kids day the Wizards dancers get a bit of a break. They're dancing is technically very good and fun to watch, but I am often nervous about how risque it is. Good not to let the kids see too much too early -- good for the Wizards!

Stevenson didn't deserve that technical.

Hope Songalia is better soon. Great game there, too.

But Caron! Caron! Such HEART!! Scrambling for everything. And really taking it to the hoop with V.Carter a couple of times. What a game it was for Caron!!

Posterize = make a huge play on someone - like a huge dunk you would see on a poster.
