Hoo Wants Chicken?
Ummm, chicken.
It's a holiday, so I'll be scarce today, but just to hold you over....here's an e-mail I got from a Loyal Reader Laura, concerning Local No. 2 Virginia's big home win over Boston College:
At most home games, Raising Canes holds a promotion: if UVA makes nine or more threes, everyone with a ticket is entitled to buy-one-get-one-free value meals the following day. With a little less than a minute left in the [Boston College] game, the Hoos had accumulated eight threes and a 15-point lead. Knowing UVA was one three-point-shot short, the student section chanted "We Want Chicken."
[Sean] Singletary brought the ball down the floor and instructed his teammates, most especially Adrian Joseph. Singletary started to drive and had a pretty good chance at getting to the basket. But rather than taking the shot, Singletary passed the ball back out to Joseph, who was standing just behind the three-point line. Seeing that the game was steadily in hand, I definitely think that Singletary and Joseph planned the play to get us free chicken. Awesome.
And it would appear the "We Want Chicken" chant has already made previous appearances in the JPJ this season. This is the living dead and fried embodiment of the connection between student body and team, the players feeding off the crowd and the crowd then quite literally feeding off the accomplishments of their team. This, also, shows senior leadership and a team coming together, Singletary being the straw that stires the drink, in this case a 22 oz. soft drink, which makes Adrian Joseph the cole slaw, Dave Leitao the Texas Toast of Charlottesville, and the Cavalier the symbolic pourer of 1 (one) container of Cane's Sauce over the whole mess. This, indeed, is college basketball at its finest. Grease not included.

I was involved in a "We want Pizza!" chant at the Cap Center during a Caps game. 8 goals got us free pizza, too bad Jerry's Pizza sucks.

That happens all the time at GW games too - used to be we want Domino's (7 threes - free pizza), then pitas when they started giving out Quick Pita.

I was at a A's vs Blue Jays game in Oakland and Clemens was pitching. The A's had a promotion that if Clemens struck out 20, everyone got pizza. When he got to 19 we started chanting for pizza. Then the Jays took him out of the game. Damn Canaadian bastards. But still funny that the A's had a promotion for a visiting team and not the home team. I think it was a near sellout as well.

Doesn't trump the "We Want Tacos" chant at the center formally known as Verizon, but it's cool nonetheless.
