Kimmel/Letterman Copying DeShawn/Gooden

For all my talk about being a great source for professional athlete facial hair news, I've been woefully lacking on three recent major stories.

1) In yesterday's Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Drew Gooden provides an update on his beard-growing contest with DeShawn Stevenson.

"There's been a lot of years since you've heard of someone growing a beard or having a beard growing contest," Gooden said. "Kimmel and Letterman copied me and DeShawn. Once again, I decide to do something and someone copies."

Gooden also suggests allowing fans to choose his hair style next season, a prospect which I endorse in the strongest manner possible.

2) The Boston Globe wisely asked some New England sports folks about the Letterman beard. Here's the Patriots' Dan Koppen:

The Pats offensive lineman, who's sporting a big red beard himself, finds facial hair to be "warmer" and "more manly," though he admits that there's an "itchy stage" that can be annoying. Of Letterman's and O'Brien's beards, Koppen said he hopes their look leads to higher ratings. "I think people appreciate the hard work that goes into it and the dedication. I'm glad they're doing it. If they need some more tips, send them to me."

3) The American Mustache Institute, run by D.C. native Aaron Perlut, has been doing groundbreaking work on Jason Kidd's mustache. From writing the team to defend Kidd, to decrying the premature shave, to issuing an official statement of mourning, AMI truly lived up to its billing as "the ACLU of mustached Americans." From the statement:

It lived a life most of us would envy. But, in the end, NBA point guard Jason Kidd's New Year's mustache never really had a chance and ended up in a bathroom basin, dead after less than a week of life.

"We salute Jason Kidd for having the guts to grow a 'stache when many said he couldn't," said Aaron Perlut, executive director of The American Mustache Institute. "Sadly, Kidd disappointed us all. Now, his mustache is gone and there's a void above his lip and in the hearts of mustached-Americans everywhere."

I didn't notice anyone copying that duck tail he was sporting last year. Did I miss it?

Gooden must mean Conan and Letterman right? Pretty sure sarah silverman could grow better facial hair than kimmel.

Some people can grow it and some cant case in point Wizards PR guy Daren Jenkins has had what appears to be some hair growing on his chin for sometime now but we are not sure if its facial or just some leftover cotton candy from when his daddy took him to the circus last year.

I thought that stuff on Daren's chin was from falling off the bike he got from Caron's bikes for kids program...

I heard Wizards Equipment Manager Rob Suller and former washingtonwizards.com Website Manager Eric Hernandez challenged each other to a hair growing contest but after two weeks of neither contestants hair growing at all the contest was called off.
