Pols Paying Tribute to Gibbs

Next week: praising volunteers for fighting their guts out. (Getty)

Personally, I found it nothing but touching that so many famous political-types have chosen to play homage to Joe Gibbs over the past few chaotic days. They could have said that they were taking the race one day at a time, or that the primary season is what it is, or that Ron Paul is who we thought he was. Or they could have said "General Election? You kidding me? General Election? I just hope we can win a primary!"

But they didn't say any of those things. Instead, this is what they said:

Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.: "I congratulate Sen. McCain on a hard-fought campaign."

Barack Obama: "I want to congratulate Sen. Clinton on a hard-fought victory."

Hillary Clinton: "I've always felt that this is going to be a very tough, hard-fought election."

Barack Obama: "This is going to be a really hard-fought battle."

Giuliani Campaign Manager Michael DuHaime: "We congratulate Mike Huckabee on a hard-fought victory in Iowa."

Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle: "It's been a hard-fought race here in Iowa for the last year and all eyes now turn to New Hampshire."

There was one other hard-fought Obama reference that I've misplaced just now. So, uh, that's three hard-foughts from Obama in less than a week? Is Mr. Snyder on this guy yet?

Wrong! That was very amusing.

Up here, in the presidential race, it's always gonna be real hard fought. But we'll just keep swingin' out here...you know, the thing is, the Lord's blessed us with a great campaign staff...

I'm sure Snyder's head is spinning considering a democrat is coining 'hard fought' in the political arena.

You know, part of me really wishes that Your What was writing a haiku there.

Jokes fly overhead
Unfamiliarity
Breeds contempt again

Now that, what Chest Rockwell has so eloquently added, is a haiku.

And a mighty fine, hard-fought haiku to boot.
