Jim Fassel Bites Back

I'd expect it'll get uglier than this at some point, but for now, here are a few of Fassel's pointed comments about Vinny Cerrato the Redskins, via CBSSports.com's Clark Judge

"At the end of the day," said Fassel, "Dan wanted to make a big splash, and I think he was worried about the Baltimore thing. He worried about the public relations (fallout), and he didn't know which way to go.

"I heard someone say there are no more George Youngs or Jim Finks in this league, people who really know the game. And I think that happened here. I don't think Dan surrounded himself with enough football people."

And also:

"Someone said to me that Jim Zorn has three jobs he hasn't done now," Fassel said. "He's a head coach, and he's never done it. He's an offensive coordinator, and he's never done it. And he's calling the plays, and he's never done it."

Other things Jim Zorn has likely never done: lived in Washington D.C., driven on the Dulles Toll Road, eaten at Ben's Chili Bowl, ventured into the second verse of Hail to the Redskins, sampled a Smoot Smack Energy bar. Dude is obviously in completely over his head.

Yeah... Coach woulda put me in fourth quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind.

great job Fassel did calling the plays in Baltimore, hes a tool.

Posted by: Andy from Baltimore | February 10, 2008 06:03 PM

Wow, what bitter grapes from Fassel. If he really felt that way about the organization, then why in the hell was he so interested in the job?

Awesome Fassel picture, by the way.

Posted by: ThomasJefferson | February 10, 2008 06:09 PM

Hey Fassel you forgot to mention he's never gotten his butt kicked in the superbowl or been fired like you have been. Why don't you just take the other job offers you have to coach...oh thats right no one has even offered you a waterboy job!

Posted by: fasselusuck | February 10, 2008 06:20 PM

It sounds like Fassel has a real bone to pick with Vinny.

Posted by: 1st and Goal | February 10, 2008 06:21 PM

Fassel is a broken sown retread. His last team in NY quit on him and he showed all of his offensive brilliance in Baltimore. He was fired as the playcaller and then the offensive coordinator and no one has wanted to hire him as either. He would have been a disaster. I have been critical of Snyder and his moronic attempt to hire a head coach. That said, after listening to Zorn, the danny may have stumbled into something here. Zorn was very impressive and I liked the fact that he called the danny dan, vice Mr. Snyder like the other ass-wipes.

Posted by: Phillip258 | February 10, 2008 06:35 PM

And Dan Steinberg never would have gotten this cushy gig at the WaPo without the Likud Party, American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Heritage Foundation, American Enterprise Institute, and Howie Kurtz.

Posted by: Mark | February 10, 2008 06:38 PM

Fassel's lucky he isnt the coach. The Redskins will be losers as long as Snyder is the owner. Enjoy 4th place losers!

Posted by: Mike | February 10, 2008 06:49 PM

Someone should remind Fassel that the only reason he was considered for the job was the Snyder doesn't have enough football people around him.

Come on, Fassel is a perpetual loser and coaching retread. Better to go with an unknown than a known loser. Fassel is not Bill Cower.

I would have rather seen the Skins get Russ Grimm from the Cardinals but I'm excited about having coach who will try something new, can work with our young QB.

Posted by: Mike | February 10, 2008 06:49 PM

Yea, will see. who is your team LOSER.

Posted by: CGSKINS | February 10, 2008 07:16 PM

Dan hired the right Jim. Fassel is a fossil. He has nothing fresh to offer, which is why he has no other interest to be anything in the NFL, NCAA, Arena League, or even Pop Warner. We will see what Jim Zorn has for playcalling. At least we are doing something new. Still need a GM to run the personnel office, but hey, baby steps.

Posted by: A.C. | February 10, 2008 07:24 PM

"I don't think Dan surrounded himself with enough football people."

What is Fassel talking about? Snyder has plenty of "football people" in the fold. In fact, word out of Redskins Park is that Danny will be hiring Bruce Arena on Monday. How about them apples!

Posted by: laz | February 10, 2008 07:31 PM

Snyder and this organization are constantly finding ways to lose:

1. Snyder knows nothing about the game of football.

2. Snyder is too stubborn to bring in a GM.

3. Why is Vinny Cerrato still here?

4. Why are we hiring a head coach with no coaching experience?

5. Why would anyone want to coach here after spending 20 hours with Dan Snyder?

6. How many fans will give up their seats this year? Can't you see the see of empty seats, now that Joe Gibbs is gone?

7. Dan, we appreciate your wanting to have a winning a team; now please do the right thing and sell the team! The fans need to have some fun again!!!

I liked what I heard from Zorn and he brings fresh ideas without forgetting our past. His press comments were first class...did not hear any "The way I want.."

Fassel?

Posted by: Steve | February 10, 2008 07:56 PM

I liked what I heard from Zorn and he brings fresh ideas without forgetting our past.

And he refered to the Skins colors as "maroon and yellow."

Oh yeah, he's a keeper. It's not like Snyder is batting a .1000 here, ya know?

Fassel wasn't the answer but remember Snyder was going to hire him had he pulled off getting Rex Ryan from the Ravens.

Next year is gonna be rough for Redskins fans. :(

You definitely forget: Never voted in the Atlantic 11 poll.

Posted by: WaPoLiveFan16 | February 10, 2008 08:38 PM

We'll see about Jim Zorn. We already knew about Jim Fossil (loser). What were JF's credentials, OC of the worst offense in the NFL. Less than .500 in NY. Wow, and he doesn't think JZ was a better choice? An unknown is better than a never was. Fans, give JZ a chance before digging his grave. Remember, Andy Reid had a similar background when he took over the Eagles and he has done a pretty decent job.

trainwreck

Posted by: ASK | February 10, 2008 09:31 PM

Fassel should just shut up, but his comments are far from false regarding the Redskins organization and how its run.

Posted by: caphcky | February 10, 2008 09:34 PM

1. You know your franchise is in trouble when Jim Fassel is taking shots at you.

2. Don't forget Zorn hasn't been to the Sideline at the Boulevard yet. Or has he?

Posted by: ScottVanPeltStyle.com | February 10, 2008 09:35 PM

sound comments coming from the man who built the offensive juggernaut that was the Batlimore Ravens.

Posted by: b-mo | February 10, 2008 09:35 PM

@Ralph

I hope that a ton of people don't renew their season tickets.....because mine will improve!!

Here's to Danny not imposing the obnoxious PSLs!!

For those that actually wouldn't renew because a new head coach didn't match their desires......good riddance.

They aren't real Skins fans anwyay.

Posted by: goosedude | February 10, 2008 09:49 PM

I hear that Fassil may go to work for the Hillary Express. Maybe he can get them to .500 also. She does need help in Baltimore.
Way to go Mr. Snyder, All true Redskin fans are supporting you!

Posted by: M.... | February 10, 2008 09:54 PM

Cerrato bankrupt the 48ers and now he is doing the same here. What a looooooossseeeeerrrrr!!!

Posted by: tzimi | February 10, 2008 09:54 PM

hire a washinton post editoral writer
as the coach as least we will know everything is going to the left instead
of all over the place

Posted by: weddle | February 10, 2008 09:58 PM

Its not fossil he shouls never be in contention to get this job. The problem is the jerk Dan Snyder. He is a horses rear end and the Skins will be garbage as long as he is owner.

Posted by: daddycsb | February 10, 2008 11:07 PM

In 2004 and 2005, Jim and Kitty Fassel owned a Quiznos restaurant in Denville, New Jersey. Their son Brian was in charge of day to day operations.

Posted by: $2 Flatbread Fassel Sammie | February 10, 2008 11:37 PM

Sorry Dude....We didn't want you!

Posted by: | February 11, 2008 04:34 AM

Coach-when you're right, you're right. I hate to be the one breaking the news to you but the Redskins don't matter anymore. It is them and the Raiders by themselves that are once solid NFL franchises which are now a complete joke...see the 32 day search to find a "nice, fresh, new idea(please...)" coach who has never even coached a HS team...do you think the thought "what have I done?" entered Snyder's head about 10 times yesterday during the news confernece???

Posted by: andthentherewasone.. | February 11, 2008 06:01 AM

Um, help me out here, but lost in all the "Snyder's a loser" comments aren't we forgetting that daSkinz actually made it to the playoffs?

Posted by: Rob Iola | February 11, 2008 11:06 AM

I'll help you out rob iola. that is exactly why snyder is a loser. yes, we got to the playoffs with the two coordinators that he just FIRED for a guy who has been coaching for 15 years an nobody ever offered him a coordinator! Why, because none of the good coaches wanted to work for him.

Posted by: philly98 | February 11, 2008 11:19 AM

Has anyone ever wondered why Jim Fassel has not had a head coaching job since 2003 and has been fired from his only professional coaching experience since then? He is not a retread, retreads get jobs (see Wade Phillips, Norv Turner, Dave Wanstandt, etc.) Organizations are not interested in a sel- promoting, blow hard like Fassel. His success in NY was due to his coordinators (Fox, Payton) but Fassel will tell you it is his chips in the middle of the table story. Whatever! I think it is time for Jim Fassel to fade away ala Ray Handley and Bruce Coslet.

Posted by: Jim New Jersey | February 11, 2008 11:41 AM

Look, Danny Boy and Vinny left Fassel hang out to dry just like they did Gregg Williams. They are classless, devious sleazy people. So Fassel has a right to be bitter. As for the fans reaction when word of a Fassel hiring leaked, it was more a pro-Williams sentiment than it was anti-Fassel.

Posted by: Joe | February 11, 2008 11:42 AM

Great to see how many intellectual football fans are on this site and are redskins fans. You do realize that snyder has toyed with fassel for years right? how would you feel... Can you really fault Fassel for baltimores offense? do you even know who his quaterback was? do you realize who he was up against in the super bowl? only the best defense ever... as i recall the skins were at home that year... And how many super bowls did joe gibbs take the skins to his last time around? spare me the 3 wins in 13 years. thats like saying torre should still be coaching the yanks for his 4 WS wins last decade... how many successful teams has jim zorn coached? fassel is better off without this troubled organization, he should feel fortunate.

Posted by: GoodLuckSkins | February 11, 2008 12:46 PM

Synder and Cerrato suck!!

Posted by: Jim Fassel | February 11, 2008 01:16 PM

I'm writing to inform you of my great disdain and hatred for Vinny Cerrato AKA "the little weasel" and Daniel Synder AKA "the little Napoleon." I was duped and mislead throughout the interview process and thrown to the curb for the affections of another.

I think I'll have that drink now!!

Posted by: Jim Fassel | February 11, 2008 01:20 PM

I guess this was the year of the re-tread then, because one of them even won the superbowl and the other two won thier divisions!
