Terps Speak of the Crazies

Costumes.

Several notes from the Terps' last media appearance before facing Duke tomorrow night....

1) As you'd expect, a popular question concerned chants at Cameron and those wacky Duke students.

James Gist: "Since I've been at Maryland they haven't been able to get under anybody's skin. Even the times that we lost at Duke--I think we only lost twice [at Duke] maybe since I've been here--those times we lost they never got under anybody's skin. I mean, I love playing at Duke though. Their fans are great and they come up with some pretty clever stuff and sometimes it'll put a smile on your face during the game. But at the same time you can't get caught up with the fans."

Dave Neal: "You've kind of just got to ignore it and hopefully try to keep it out of your skin and play hard and just go on with the game, and just use it as more of an adrenaline rush and a motivation to beat 'em, just to make 'em even more mad at you and hate you even more....When we go down there with Greivis they know Spanish and they start chanting stuff in Spanish to him and obviously he's the only one that understands it."

Gary Williams: "They're very smart down there. They figured that Greivis is from Venezuela, so that means he knows Spanish. So they say stuff in Spanish. Amazing."

2) The best chant Gist has heard? When he was a freshman he hugged his mom before the game, and the Crazies saw the hug, and then when he went to shoot free throws the Crazies chanted "Mama's Boy" at him. Hilarious.

3) And now, a moped story, from Dave Neal.

"Greivis actually does have a moped, he has one, and he loves riding around," Neal said. "He doesn't abide the laws or anything, he just kind of drives around and goes crazy."

Apparently Adrian Bowie and Dave Pearman also ride around campus on mopeds. Not Neal, though.

"I have a moped but my mom won't let me bring it to school," he said. "She doesn't trust me on a moped. Which is understandable."

4) Somewhere, a Duke fan is thinking, "Ma-ma's Boy! Ma-ma's Boy!"

5) Media comments after my moped question: "Steinberg, always covering the important issues," and also, "hard-hitting." If you want to see the compelling quotes I would have gotten without the mopeds, try out this one from Neal:

"We're one big, trustful team, and we all play together, and we love being together."

Or Gist: "Honestly I never try to go into a game thinking I've got to be the one to carry the team. I mean, it's a team game and I know all my teammates out there are gonna be ready to play and I know everybody's gonna be ready to contribute. But I always go in to each game just making sure that I'm ready for that game and whatever might happen....I mean, anything that I can do to help the team win, that's what I look forward to doing."

Hard-hitting.

6) If you haven't already, please read Patrick Stevens's blog items about the dining habits of Keith Booth. It involves Potbelly, and something called "The Boobie Miles Value Meal," according to sources close to the team.

7) And now, a Lefty Driesell story, from Gary Williams. Lefty, who went to Duke, will be honored at tomorrow's game.

"I asked Lefty this and he said it was true," Williams began. "He said when he was coaching at Maryland they have that lobby out there after games that you've got to go through. There were some people there, and one of the Duke students came up and asked Lefty for his autograph. And he signed a big 'X' on the kid's notepad. The kid goes, 'Hey, c'mon.' Lefty says, 'Hey, I graduated from Duke.' "

8) Finally, Gary's response when asked whether he enjoys the sound of a full-but-quiet Cameron Indoor.

"Oh yeah," he said. "But it gets pretty quiet here when we lose too, you know? Except for people yelling at me."

Crazies coordinate Mopeds Suck chant in 5...4...3...2...

Lefty Driesell and Dexter Manley have the exact same autograph

Another Lefty incident at Duke from espn-
When Maryland's Herman Veal was alleged to have sexually abused a fellow student -- he was disciplined, but never formally charged -- the Crazies showered him with more than 1,000 panties, and one student held up a sign that read, "HEY, HERM, DID YOU SEND HER FLOWERS?" (After this incident, Lefty Driesel once again distinguished himself as a good sport and worthy foe. When asked if he was upset by the sign, Lefty said, "No, I can't read. I went to Duke.")

see Dan, Maryland is totally funny!

Lefty Driesell will always be a Royal Duke in my heart.

Personally, I want to hear about Gary filling up on Roman's from Cluck-U after games.

If the Crazies were smart they'd realize acknowledging and saying "Vasquez" is enough to throw him off his game. Did you ever say where or who he "borrowed" the moped from?

Funny story about Vasquez's Moped: He and Boom (who was riding on the back) almost ran me over one day while turning a corner around the back of the ERC near the outdoor rec center this summer. I guess they figured that there weren't many people on campus. I bet the shocks on that bike are beat.

A few ladies on the Women's team also own and ride Mopeds to class, specifically, Jade Perry, who nearly castrated me for saying that Maryland Madness was, "Okay" while we were waiting to be let into Cumberland Hall after the event.

Lastly, I think the football players get jealous that they don't have motorized transportation - too bad they just wont fit.

I've seen Greivis on his moped. The funniest part is him trying to sneak it out of the parking garage without paying.

I see other players too. Saw Shea Doron on one when she was still here.

Oh, and I've seen football players on them too. I wonder who "lends" the players those things.

Also, Lefty stories are priceless. The best.

BREAKING NEWS: UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND INVESTIGATED FOR POSSIBLE NCAA VIOLATIONS
Associated Press

Updated: February 12, 2008, 11:43 PM ET

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Feb. 12 -- Sources within the University of Maryland athletic department say the University is in the midst of an investigation to find if student-athletes were improperly given transportation for use on campus. The NCAA has not begun an investigation. Though contacted, no members of the athletic staff would comment on the investigation.

Doug Dull has stated there will be a press conference at 10:30 ET inside of the Comcast Center. Gary Williams, Daron Park, and Brenda Frese will not be available at the press conference.

That Gary quote is awesome.

And those media comments mocking Steinz' brand of journalism reek of jealous, bitter and dusty old men.

Vasquez on a moped > Henry Winkler on water skis.

I think the classiest chant I ever heard came from the Crazies. Back in the late '80's Scott Williams played for UNC. He had recently lost his father and mother due to a tragic murder-suicide. What chant did the Dukies greet him with in his first trip to Cameron? "Or-phan, Or-phan!!"

Posted by: nedsyoungerbrother.blogspot.com | February 13, 2008 11:09 AM

not true

Posted by: ^^^^^^^^^^^ | February 13, 2008 12:17 PM

That's about as bad as UVA's classy blue-blazered students chanting "crackhead parents" at Juan Dixon.

Posted by: Markus V. | February 13, 2008 12:18 PM

Dude, I read it on the internet, its got to be true
