DaJuan Summers is Smiling

DaJuan Summers, not smiling.

Greetings from a nearly empty RBC Center in Raleigh. There were probably fewer than 200 fans in here during Georgetown's open practice, and those that were here didn't see much, other than some passing and shooting drills. The Hoyas' open locker room was also fairly uneventful: lots of local TV types (Dan Hellie, Dave Feldman, David Lee) were there, but the players seemed more interested in watching the Xavier-Georgia game, which was being played on Georgetown's home floor.

Someone had a copy of this week's Sports Illustrated, however, which features DaJuan Summers on the (regional) cover. Several Hoyas said that they were thrilled to see the sophomore forward get some attention--"He deserves it; he plays hard," said junior guard Jessie Sapp--but they were shocked to see that Summers is smiling.

"Whenever you see DaJuan, he has a mean look on his face," sophomore Vernon Macklin said. "So when we saw it, everybody was laughing at it because we don't see DaJuan smile as much."

Senior Roy Hibbert, who was on the cover of the past two SI college basketball preview issues, said that he makes a point of not smiling when he has his picture taken. But Summers said that the photographer asked him to smile, so he did.

"That might be the worst smile I've seen," senior Patrick Ewing Jr. said as he passed the magazine.

Replied Summers, "I'm still prettier than you."

The funniest part is that they spelled his name wrong on the cover.

Seriously, that's one the most memorable things I've got from last year's Tournament....

Someone on Hoyatalk pointed out, and rightly so, that the misspelling of DaJuan rules him out of the SI Cover curse.
