Georgetown Wins

[Note: this is not a serious write-up. Thanks.]

NEW YORK--Georgetown took advantage of 104 percent three-point shooting and foul trouble that happily kept both its centers safely on the bench to easily dispatch Villanova, 82-63 in a Big East quarterfinal this afternoon.

The Georgetown student section celebrated the victory with an "N.I.T." chant directed at Villanova, which might or might not be accurate. Wildcats Coach Jay Wright mourned the loss by spending about a minute berating a referee in the late going. "That's enough," said another referee to Wright, who responded with more excited chatter that sure seemed to include a bad word.

Sadly, despite the huge margin, neither Nikita Mescheriakov nor Bryon Jansen got into the game, which was blessedly free of late-game fouling. Georgetown advances, eventually, to play Louisville in the final, while the West Virginia band advanced to face whomever else wears neon clothes while playing a funked-out version of Country Roads.

Hibbert is believed to have finished with 0 points and those five fouls, giving him five infinitely more fouls than points.

1) The arithmetic operation you are looking for there is subtraction, not division. Hibbert had 5 more fouls than he did points. That wasn't so hard.

2) The operation of diving a number by zero results in an undefined quantity, not "infinity." As one divides any number by a quantity approaching zero, the result approaches infinity, but division by zero itself does not have a defined result.

Other than that, good writeup.

I think that they decided to redshirt Nikita, so he wasn't getting in the game regardless.

Scariest big win all year

Slow down Dan...lots of typos.

"The Georgetown student section celebrated the victory with an "N.I.T." chant directed at Villanova, which might or might be accurate."

Might or might be accurate?

Best observation EVER!

Because Scooter has lived a 100 percent typo-free life.

Lindemann:

Well, if he had written "infinitely as many fouls as points," he would have been correct because this implies multiplication (five times as many, three times as many, infinitely as many, etc.). But you're correct, the way it is written implies addition, not multiplication.

It caused me to pause, too.

On a related note, it drives me nuts whenever a highly paid writer calls the touchdown-to-interception differential a ratio.

you know he was being sarcastic though right?

Thanks for the blogging. Great win & terrible officiating. Maybe the officials heard all the whining from Nova & W.Va. & overcompensated.

I know Roy Hibbert played less than a half today, but I'm starting to think Tim "The Big Purple Dog" Clifford from Holy Cross might be able to take him one-on-one.

Posted by: KC in DC | March 13, 2008 3:40 PM

Roy Hibbert... you are terrible.

Posted by: Ian | March 13, 2008 3:48 PM

Jay Wright was complaining to the refs? Was he arguing that his team didn't deserve infinitely more free throws than Georgetown in the first 27 minutes of the game?

(I learned math the same way Dan did.)

Posted by: Anna | March 13, 2008 4:00 PM

Roy didn't come out to play, but to call the guy terrible is a little over the top, huh Ian? But when Hibbs is making millions next year, he'll show you what hard work and dedication can do. Sure, he's been blessed with a big body, but a lot of hard work separates him from the taller guy at UNC-Asheville. Where did that get you, Ian?

Don't slow down to check your typos, numbers or math concepts, Dan. Timely in-game blog posts are key for those of us stuck ESPNless at work. I'm surprised no one pointed out your egregious 104% typo in the first line. Jeez, who let the sticklers in.

ILL SAY IT AGAIN: YOU KNOW HE WAS BEING SARCASTIC RIGHT?? this is a humorous blog, not meant to have any real sports news, just sports related news that is incredible interesting and important
