Opening Night Celebrities: Horses, Elliot Yamin
Competing with Elliot Yamin for biggest opening night celeb.
Let's hope the list keeps growing, but as of now we have, according mostly to this Nats release:
The Budweiser Clydesdales.
Denyce Graves (singing the National Anthem)
Elliot Yamin (singing God Bless America)
A variety of local musicians, including the Sheiks of Dixie (Dixieland), The Ringers (barbershop), the Mambo Combo (zydeco) and Brian Gross (a guitarist).
The president of the United States, the mayor of D.C., and assorted face painters and caricaturists.
Other celebrities likely to appear on the final list: a lot of middle-aged politicians in suits.
(In food news, here's a menu of available ballpark food (with some prices), here's an interview with the Centerplate chef that includes the words "Southern Catfish BLT" and "Cucumber Noodle Salad," and here's an explanation of some of the visiting-team fare that will be offered:
Not only will Nationals Park include some of the best food from the Washington region, the ballpark will pay tribute to the visiting teams with special food selections from the opposing team's hometowns. For example, there will be Philly cheesesteaks, Sheboygan brats (Milwaukee), BBQ pulled pork sandwiches (Atlanta) and garlic fries (San Fran) at every game.
There will also be favorites like Chicago-style hot dogs when the Cubs are in town, fish tacos when the Padres are in D.C., and pierogies when the Pirates make the trek to Washington.
I like the concept, but geez, it does seem to suggest a distinct lack of local originality, no? I mean, can you imagine Boston or New York going out of their way to offer half-smokes in honor of D.C.? Or, say, replica fish tacos, in honor of D.C.'s honoring of San Diego?

Turner Field has done the regional beers/food thing going back to their open. It even has included Bison burgers from Billionaire Ted's ranch when the Rockies were in town.

I posted this morning, but I guess it didn't work.
I'm not sure how I feel about the Nationals catering to away fans although they will probably make up a great amount of the butts in seats so I guess it makes dollars.

FMI employees will be watching the game from home because Centerplate has not bothered to hem about jobs inthe ballpark for the retail division even though resumes were sent out to Centerplate in October 2007 and FMI personnel were promised first shot at anything.

Eh, I can deal with othe rplaces food, so long as it's good. I'm really impressed by the variety of stuff they're offering. Looks like the entre items will be well priced, but the sides and drinks will be the usual ballpark ripo...uhh, "markup".
