Nats Pick Stadium Music (Updated)

Yes please. (Photo by Sam Kittner)
Mea major culpa, full list of song choices below, Chuck Brown is indeed included, apologies to the Nats.
This asking-the-fans-to-pick-the-music trend has been percolating for a few years--remember last spring, when fans were allowed to pick David Wright's at-bat music--but the Nationals have now entered the American Idol era with a wide-ranging musical plea to their fans. From this morning's release:
Through an online voting system, fans may select the song the team plays after a Nationals Home Run, during the Seventh Inning Stretch (immediately following baseball's traditional "Take Me Out To The Ballgame") and after a Nationals victory....
Fans may choose from a selection of songs, including "Because We Can" by Fat Boy Slim or "Song 2 (Woo Hoo)" by Blur for the Home Run song, and "Build Me Up Buttercup" by The Foundations or "Shout" from Otis Day and the Knights for the Seventh Inning Stretch. Choices for the Nationals Victory Song include "Beautiful Day" by U2 and "How Do You Like Me Now" by Toby Keith.
UPDATE: The full list of choices:
Home Runs: Because We Can (Fatboy Slim), Bustin Loose (Chuck Brown), Kernkraft 400 (Zombie Nation), Off We Go--Air Force Theme (Robert Crawford), Song 2-Woo Hoo (Blur).
7th Inning Stretch: Build Me Up Buttercup (The Foundations), Rock Me Gently (Andy Kim), September (Earth Wind & Fire), Shout (Otis Day and the Knights), The Gambler (Kenny Rogers), Twist And Shout (the Beatles), YMCA (Village People), You Gotta Have Heart (Damn Yankees The Musical).
Post-game Victories: Beautiful Day (U2), Celebration (Kool and the Gang), Dancing In The Streets (Martha Reeves and the Vandelas), How Do You Like Me Now (Toby Keith), Rock and Roll Part 2 (Gary Glitter).
I guess I'll endorse Blur, Buttercup and none of the above in the three categories. Seriously, couldn't we work one Chuck Brown tune in here? Bad Brains? Minor Threat? Even the lamentable Good Charlotte chaps at least have the benefit of being local.
If "Shout" becomes the 7th Inning tradition....well, I just feel like with a new stadium, a new team, a new quadrant, a new outfield, a new scoreboard and a new concessionaire, it might befit the team not to choose a 7th Inning anthem that is regularly played in every sports venue in the country.
I call that the audacity of hope, and I believe that yes, we can seize our future. But that's the beauty of democracy, I guess. Voting begins tomorrow at 9 am; no word if write-ins are accepted, but I'd be curious to hear your musical additional ideas.

How about the Pietasters? Originally hailing from GMU, they rep the Atlantic 11 as well!
Posted by: LaStephen | March 12, 2008 11:53 AM
What's a guy gotta do to get his Atlantic 11 fix?
Posted by: Voter | March 12, 2008 11:59 AM
Hunh. I guess they don't realize that "Beautiful Day" isn't really a happy song per say.
They coudl throw some Police in there since Stewart Copeland was born here, even if he didn't stay long. How about Minor Threat? Heck, they could try The Bravery to. The lead singer started here.

"Welcome to D.C." -Mambo Sauce
Posted by: kwamesnani | March 12, 2008 12:09 PM
I agree, we need minor threat, chuck brown and the pietasters on the ballot
shout is one of the most overplayed
songs ever
Posted by: Jeff V | March 12, 2008 12:12 PM
I'll second Chuck Brown.
I've been saying for yeras that Heart from Damn Yankees also needs to be used.
Posted by: WFY | March 12, 2008 12:17 PM
yeah, these are terrible. to paraphrase Spinal Tap, "The musical growth of songs played at sporting events cannot even be charted. They are treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry."
Posted by: jamie | March 12, 2008 12:20 PM
Man, even the Redskins at crappy FedEx have been known to play some fugazi from time to time.
Posted by: John Taylor | March 12, 2008 12:21 PM
Hoo boy.
Slim pickin's indeed.
But Minor Threat or Bad Brains really loud in Nationals Park? Wow! There's a thought!
I'm thinking "PMA - Positive Mental Attitude" ... or really some Chuck Brown. Even the most uptight baseball fan can move to those beats.
No matter how good the song is for the situation it gets old fast. I hope they bounce around a bit with more song selections.
Posted by: Spalding | March 12, 2008 12:41 PM
But not surprising. I agree with the Chuck Brown idea, FWIW.
Posted by: prophet | March 12, 2008 12:51 PM
Wow, the victory songs still suck. Chuck Brown for homeruns, The Beatles for the Stretch.
How about somw James Brown for the victory?
Posted by: EricS | March 12, 2008 12:56 PM
Weak weak weak weak options. Come on now. Let's at least use some imagination. Real lame, Nats.
Posted by: Ryan | March 12, 2008 01:02 PM
These options are terrible. "Bustin Loose" has to be the 7th Inning Stretch song. No idea how this isn't an option, unless Kasten is worried go-go is too urban for his new SW stadium. My idea for the victory song, while exceptionally popular with sorority girls and dudes in Miatas, is fun and local; "Revolution" by OAR. Some of the band members are from Rockville and anyone under 35 has heard it.

I totally agree with unbridledpragmatist. You can't have any sport in D.C. without homage to the Diamond City soundtrack.
Besides, 'Run Joe' probably wouldn't go over well with corporate suite owners like 'Bustin Loose' would.

This is only some of the songs. The press release directs you to the voting site for a complete list. However, the list has not been put up on the voting site as of yet. I am guessing they will not do that until the voting period site starts tomorrow.

We may get our Chuck Brown fix if they show any DC Lottery commercials on the big screen. How can you not have Chuck Brown?!
Posted by: straub21 | March 12, 2008 01:21 PM
I hope the choices available to voting are much better. Those mentioned and omitted are unforgivable.
Posted by: sitruc | March 12, 2008 01:25 PM
Chuck Brown is the only good option. The rest are over-used or just bad songs. How about "Get Up" by James Brown for the 7th inning stretch?
Posted by: PowerBoater | March 12, 2008 02:05 PM
HOME RUNS
Bustin Loose (Chuck Brown)
If I could choose: Learn to Fly (Foo Fighters) Dave Grohl from Springfield
STRETCH
The Gambler (Kenny Rogers)
Write in: Relax (Frankie goes to Hollywood) Instant Credibility from an overachieving, yet still underrated '80s classic
VICTORY
Dancing in the Streets (T.C. Carter version - a la 'Ski Patrol')
Write in: Take the Long Way Home (Supertramp)
Posted by: WaPoLiveFan16 | March 12, 2008 02:19 PM
or some starland vocal band, gtown's finest. even take me home west virginia that they wrote and was originally about clopper road in rockville- but i guess youd have to change the words. even dave mathews you know with the UVA stuff. i would be shocked though if fugazi or minor threat would license their stuff condsidering the DIY deal.
Posted by: | March 12, 2008 02:23 PM
Definitely agree with James Brown "Get Up" for 7th Inning Stretch... not just for being a classic song that fits the mold they seem to be using for that category and a better song than any options on the board, but the literal usage makes it a perfect fit.
Posted by: DC | March 12, 2008 02:26 PM
I was hoping there would be drastic changes before we saw what the choices were going to be. I'm even more disappointed now than when I originally read this post.
Posted by: sitruc | March 12, 2008 02:46 PM
This is totally freakin' weak. The more this sinks in, I'm straight up upset at how lame this is. Marvin freakin Gaye, Bad Brains, Fugazi, Minor Threat... I could go on for about 20 minutes but for cryin' out loud, how do you completely overlook the musical influences that have been generated from this region? I've been a ticket holder since 2005 and this upsets me more than anything that has happened.
WEAK WEAK WEAK WEAK... I really don't even know what to say. Ownership - do some research!! Yeah, Chuck Brown is great but there's more out there - hello?
Posted by: Mike | March 12, 2008 03:54 PM
I second all those DC choices. Don't forget Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan, two of the best country guitarists EVAR.
Posted by: | March 12, 2008 05:53 PM
How about the ultimate Washington song: "I'm just a bill"?
Seriously, I never understood don't they ever play Fogerty's "Centerfield" at ballgames. I can't think of a more appropriate song for the 7th inning stretch.
Put me in coach, I'm ready to play, today!
Posted by: rick in reston | March 12, 2008 06:08 PM
I'm not so sure Ian and company would even want their song used. They complained to Fox for using about 5 seconds of "Salad Days" during a football broadcast.
Although "Waiting Room" would sound great blasted over a stadium's speakers in between innings.
Speaking of Ian, is it true that the Georgetown Haggan Daas is closed? I walked by it recently and it was all boarded up.
Posted by: Reid | March 12, 2008 07:07 PM
I choose Zombie Nation for the Home run, Kenny Rogers for the seventh inning stretch, just cause I don't think I've heard that in any stadium...at least not for a long time, and man do those celebration choices suck, but I'll go with...no, can't make the choice, sorry.
Posted by: Aaron | March 13, 2008 03:53 AM
I can't believe that the Gary Glitter song is a choice. That guy is a convicted child molester, he's actually been convicted in two different countries and thrown out of a third. Do we really want to have to think about that sicko after every Nats win? The NFL told teams to stop playing that song, MLB should probably do the same.
Posted by: appalled | March 13, 2008 08:58 AM
Guys, we need more gogo at DC sporting events.
I say, for home runs, "Drop the Bomb" (Chuck) would be awesome.
I think when the team comes out to the field, "Welcome to DC" by Mambo Sauce is an excellent choice.
Or perhaps the Lerners should commission R.E. to create an entirely original song for DC baseball. That would be incredible.
Posted by: Scroot | March 13, 2008 08:58 AM
While I like the idea of "Welcome to DC," the song kind of sucks. How about Wale? Or for 30 something hipsters, "Washington DC" by the Magnetic Fields.
Posted by: Andrew from Colonial Hoops | March 13, 2008 10:11 AM
Had to go with:
Bustin' Loose
You Gotta Have Heart (a great slugger, we haven't got / a great pitcher, we haven't got...)
and How Do You Like Me Now is the least awful of the awful choices for the win music.
Kernkraft 400 should be out just because they play it so much at Oriole Park.
Posted by: Steve | March 13, 2008 11:42 AM
Scroot, I second that go-go thought and told the nats as much in my voting.
Posted by: harrisburg | March 13, 2008 11:58 AM
Suggestions to make in the write-in space:
* After a successful steal: Chuck Brown's "Run Joe"
* During pitching changes: Fugazi's "Waiting Room"
* After a loss: Mary Chapin Carpenter's "The Bug" ("Sometimes you're a Louisville Slugger/ Sometimes you're the ball")
* While the visiting ream's bus rolls out of the ballpark after they lose: Smart Went Crazy's "D.C. Will Do That To You."
