NCAA Tourney Arrives in D.C.
Popcorn. It's tourney time.
Bob Huggins and Coach K, as far as I can tell, are not yet in the Verizon Center. What is here:
* Hoops Weiss (click link for Mike Jarvis news!) and John Feinstein.
* Media guides for our eight newly local teams, plus for the Atlantic Sun Conference, whose motto is "Building Winners for Life." The Atlantic Sun postseason guide has at least three absolutely crucial bits of information:
1) Belmont is the only team in the country to have earned the same seed in three consecutive NCAA tournaments.
2) Belmont is 0-1 all time against the ACC, but Coach Rick Byrd missed that loss to Virginia (in 1999) due to illness.
3) "In a touch of irony, Duke Senior DeMarcus Nelson ranks 33rd on the Duke all-time scoring chart. He is 10 points shy of [IRONY!!!!!!!] Joe Belmont for 32nd."
Prepare for possible apocalypse if Nelson scores 11 against Belmont to pass Belmont.
* The Mystics.
* Our college staff has blogged about this before, but nothing says "NCAA Tournament" to your typical media schlub more than a big vat of popcorn, dumped from large plastic bag into realistic popper-type apparatus, which becomes the primary form of sustenance for most writers in these four days. It was so comforting to walk into the media room (which is normally the Wiz practice court) this morning and see the popcorn already in place. I felt like I was home. Although, let's be honest, a typical Wiz practice on that court would be a lot more bloggable than this, with or without popcorn and Feinstein.
* The NCAA tournament blogging guidelines. Honestly, I've now read this four times, and I still have no idea what it means. Here they are:
All media entities (including television and print publications) have the ability to blog during competition. Any blog representing an NCAA Championship must submit the appropriate link to ncaasports.com Blog Central. In return, all media entities entering a blog must post the ncaasports.com logo on their site. All blogs must be free of charge to readers. A blog description includes in-game updates on score and time remaining in competition as well as description of the championship and competition taken place during the given time. Credentialed members of the media can post five blogs each half and one during halftime.
Incidentally, it should be pointed out that all media entitites also have the ability to pay the NCAA $16.50 for wireless access during competition.

Pay for wireless? I could have sworn the V Center had wireless already set up for the media for free.
Wait, you're telling me that popcorn popper upstairs is FAKE?! Shocking.

I'm heading up there for my lunch hour to see Baylor (Yay for Scott Drew) and then heading back the second I get out of a meeting at work (to see Duke).

So, they don't have free wireless in the building for media? Is this meant to limit bloggers? Won't this hurt reporters who want to file stories?
