Colt Brennan Costs Himself Seven Figures

(Getty).
Colt Brennan promises to be among the more bloggable of the Redskins draft picks, from his time spear fishing to his celebrated graduation to his dreadlocks to his Samoan skills to his island hairstyle to the two two">distinct Web sites created in his honor to his wonderfully named girlfriend (Shakti Stream! Third pic down.).
He also is hundreds of thousands of dollars poorer than he might have been this week, as chronicled this morning by the Honolulu Advertiser:
The former University of Hawai'i quarterback's decision to return for his senior season will cost him about $1,378,500 over a three-year period.Brennan, who was projected to be a first- or second-round pick after the 2006 season, saw his value drop after a poor outing in the Sugar Bowl, an illness that caused his weight to drop to 185 at the Senior Bowl, and a recent hip surgery....
But had he left after 2006, when he had the best statistical season by a quarterback in NCAA history, Brennan could be a richer man today.
Brennan knew that would happen heading into the weekend; here's what he told Scout.com:
The truth is if I came out after my junior year, I would have been drafted in the first or second round. The way I look at it, I was glad I went back to Hawaii, because what I experienced last year was a once in a lifetime opportunity....For me it's tough. Other guys may have had great careers or even so-so careers, and they get the benefit of the doubt. I've broken every record, won big games and everyone is still looking at me and judging me; trying to find something wrong with me physically or in my game. It seems like everyone looks at me negatively first, and that's all right. I just try to turn those negatives into a positive. All I need is one team to believe in me on draft day.
At the time, Hawaii Coach June Jones said he was turning down $25 mil. That better have been one heck of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Anyhow, his drafting was the lead story on the local news, with him answering the doubts about his delivery by saying "in three years nobody's ever been as accurate as me in the history of college football." He's also promised to be "an absolute animal" and "a big ol' quarterback who can bring it."
Oh, and like every other player drafted by the Redskins, he was destined to be drafted by the Redskins. Fred Davis played on the youth league Redskins, Durant Brooks found a golf ball with a Redskins logo last weekend and Brennan won the Sammy Baugh Trophy.

Sounds like Roy Hibbert. Good for him. The money will come.

Introducing the next Patrick Ramsey of the Washington Redskins...

He couldn't be the next Patrick Ramsey because he wasn't tagged as a QB of the future and he wasn't taken in the first round.
If anything he could be the next "Carson's little brother"

One thing no one mentions are the character issues surrounding Brennan. He served a week in jail for breaking into a dorm room and allegedly trying to sexually assault a woman. For this, he was kicked off the Colorado football team.
I'm interested to see if he has matured since this incident...

The Ravens desperately needed to draft this dude. If anything, he could've launched my career as the Baltimore sports blogger into the stratosphere.
Oh well. Back to the MEAC I go.

Wait. So the media is criticizing a player for NOT leaving early, and for getting a degree? Wow, well done media. Let's promote leaving early for millions and with no fall-back plan...

My question is what does this mean for Jason Campbell. Yeah, Yeah, I know, everyone is singing the right tune - how Jason is the QB of the future and there is no competition but it really does not make sense to me - why spend the pick on someone who will definitely never see playing time in a Skins uniform? My guess, all is not what is seems.

When I saw the headline, "Colt Brennan costs himself seven figures," I thought this entry would be about his rap sheet. But no mention at all. Good job, Steinz.

It's hard to say Troy Smith was drafted where he was because of his workouts. He was never near the top because of his size and limitations people saw before the Draft. The Draft didn't help him though. For the top players or most recognizable players, workouts may not tell as much. That is why many don't take part in them.

these things happen. Brady Quinn lost millions becasue he was drafted alot lower then he should have. There is at least one big name that is drafted really low. I dont think Colt Brennan will be a threat to Jason Cambell but we have only 2 QB and one is like 36 who has been a backup his whole career. We are weak at QB, I think Colt will be no more then a good back up at least as a Redskin.

I've followed Brennan's career for three years. I'm a graduate of UH. The first time I met him I instantly knew he was going to be something special. Yes, he readily admits to the problem at Colorado. He is a completely different individual. He spent a lot of his free time lecturing at juvenile centers in Hawaii. He was always accessible, to a fault. Hence, the losing 20 lbs prior to the Senior Bowl with all the autograph demands, interview requests, travel, etc.
Most of the analysts were already drooling on their pillows when the UH games started and only looked at the box score the following day. He has complete respect in the locker room. He leaves it all on the field. (He was voted the Senior Bowl Captain, if that means anything to anyone doubting his character.)
Bottom Line: Great Pick, has no regrets about staying for his senior year and leading UH to the Sugar Bowl (an incredible comeback against Washington when the team was down 21-0). If June Jones says he's the best QB he's ever coached, I'd have to agree. Colt will do the Redskins proud. He's matured, wants to win and those around him will sacrifice everything for success. Just like at UH. (BTW, UH lost 3 games in 2006 by a total of less than 20 points - against some very good BCS teams.)

Colt Brennan is a rock star. If the Redskins are smart, they'll figure out a way to market him. Colt's charisma and infectious personality = $$$
Oh yeah, and as far as football goes, the Redskins new WCO is tailor made for the skills Colt possesses. JC's time as a starter won't be for long cuz the one thing a QB cannot get better at is accuracy. It's just one of those things that a QB either has or he doesn't. Colt has it and JC does not.

JC WILL BE A GREAT STARTER FOR A LONG AND PROMINENT PRO BOWLER

So, Brennan leads a non-BCS school to the Sugar Bowl (obviously his numbers in the game weren't great), and still has a lower draft status than at the end of the '06 season? It's easy to speculate because he was a late round pick, doesn't mean he would've been an early round pick after '06 (there's pre-draft workouts that caused Troy Smith, who was also considered to be an early-round pick, to drop...)
