League-Wide Red Rocking

Question: What would happen if the Capitals and Devils were to meet in the Eastern Conference finals?

Answer: Mass chaos. Rioting in the streets. An utter inability to tell which fans were rooting for which team. Potential inter-fanbase mating. And lots and lots of rawking.

Why? Because the teams have virtually identical postseason slogans and postseason fan dictates.

The Caps wish you to Rock the Red, urging you to "Keep the red out going." Yeah, you can buy merchandise.

The Devils wish you to Rock Your Red, urging you to "Join the Devils Legion. Wear Red to the Playoffs!" "A new home," the franchise notes, "calls for a new playoff tradition." A playoff tradition like no other. Except the one in Washington.

Other NHL playoff slogans? The Flyers have chosen "Vengeance Now," which sounds more like a death-thrash-metal tune, or maybe a Dick Cheney autobiography. The Senators have taken "One Mission/En Mission," which I think won best foreign film documentary last year. The Bruins are using "Gotta B Here," which is the most likely to turn into a boy band song. The Canadiens have "16 pour 25 Tous Pour Un/16 For 25 All For One," which would really make for a killer bilingual arena chant. The Rangers and Penguins do not make their slogans readily available.

Out West, the slogans include "Are You In" (Detroit) and "Fight to the End" (Wild). The Flames have asked fans to "Get Red-y," but fortunately there does not promise to be any red rocking in Alberta, which would have been really confusing.

(In one more bit of rocking, Mike Green and Elliot in the Morning will be getting their mohawks tomorrow, in what is being called a Rock the 'Hawk promotion. Let's see the Devils match that.)

One hopes that the Caps and Devils soon will be fighting over the services of Sammy Hagar (a.k.a. the Red Rocker). Make this happen, Steinberg.

If only the Papal visit had coincided with a Capitals match against the Devils...the streets of DC truly would be in chaos.

"Vengeance Now?" On whom? For what?

Vengeance on the bastard that forced them to live in Philly, which is why they all move here. And Dan, didn't Calgary, ya know, kinda 'start' the whole red thing. The "Red Mile" and all? We don't own the trademark or anything.
