Wiz Contest: Win Bobbleheads, Tickets

Take me home tonight.

This woman Nancy, who sometimes reads this Bog and has already been inducted into the Bog Hall of Fame, is just incredibly generous with her Wiz swag. Remember last year, she gave away all kinds of tickets to whomever came up with the best 50-word potential speech to Gilbert. Several regular readers can verify that these tickets were actually delivered, and that Nancy turned out to be very sweet and in no way a mass murderer despite her proposal for night-time ticket drop-offs at dark Metro stations.

Anyhow, this week, she comes through again, with Nancy's Nickname-Based Bobblehead and Ticket Giveaway. She writes:

Time for another contest, huh? Well, I've been carefully squirreling away treats and I'm ready to go. First, second, and third places consisting of:

The Buck/Chenier bobblehead (which has them sitting in the wrong place, and doesn't look at all like them).

The ever-popular Washington Wizards wig!

Two tickets to the Indiana Pacers game.

Incredibly generous, right? And is the wig actually ranked ahead of the tickets? Anyhow, the contest:

I (Nancy) think Dominic McGuire is just amazing. Such potential! He jumps up so fast sometimes it's as if he knows which way the ball is bouncing off the rim before the ball does.

I think Roger Mason, long rumored to have one of the best 3-point shots in practice, has this year brought accuracy to his on-court short. He's upped his defensive game too.

Mason and McGuire might have nicknames, but none that WE THE FANS have given them. Not real nicknames. It's time!!

So, propose a nickname for Mason or McGuire (your choice), one that is appropriate for the promising skills they're showing on the court. I'm not partial to mean-spirited or dirty names, so if entrants are thinking about winning, best to keep it clean. But fun and humor are totally going to win points with the judge.

As always, judging will be done solely by me, at my sole discretion, with intense indiosyncratic and seemingly random judgment. No whining about my selection. Just deal with loss the way I do as a Wizards fan: blame the ref, and then console yourself that the poor NBA ref is just a man on a budget trying to make a spread to feed his family. Heh heh.

Post your suggestions in the comments. Limit 93 entries per person. All suggestions are due by noon on this Friday. We'll figure out who's who when Nancy picks the winners. If you're too much in the throes of Caps and/or Nats fever to think about Wiz reserves, feel free also to propose nicknames for Jesus Colome and/or Eric Fehr. "Fehrsie," I have to say, is not the world's greatest nickname. And many thanks to Nancy for the prizes.

dominatrix

Being at work stifles creativity, I'll think of a mason nickname later.

Posted by: air it out wuerffel | April 9, 2008 11:24 AM

Since Nick Young is already "The City", could roger mason be . . .

"The Suburbs?"

(Grace day school, good counsel etc.)

High Flyer McGuire?

Collects Your Brick Dominic?

Posted by: LooseCannon | April 9, 2008 11:28 AM

Roger "Not a Brick" Mason

Posted by: LooseCannon | April 9, 2008 11:32 AM

a mason is someone who builds with bricks..and we all kno roger is anything but bricks...so i propose
roger nota mason
also when he makes a shot i believe the announcers should just go with "Roger that"..because u should just acknowledge it by now...its not a surprise anymore...

and DOMINic mcguire is just the DOMINator...i think this is pretty self explanitory..

Mason - The Patriot Missile

I should have thought about this longer before posting...

Posted by: Dano | April 9, 2008 11:42 AM

Dominic McGuire = MacGuyver

1. He is so resourceful at getting rebounds. I once saw him get a rebound while sitting on the bench using only Andray Blatche's headband, a $7 Verizon Center Beer, and a drop of Gilbert Arenas' sweat.

2. It will make non-Wizard fans remember him. "Who was that crazy guy that grabbed that awesome rebound?" "Oh, that was MacGuyver"

3. I imagine when he was a kid at some point a coach screamed out "What the Hell are you doing McGrabber" "Uh coach its McGuire" "God Darnet MacGuyver give me 20 pushups."

4. Its very retro, or now-tro, I can never remember.

5. And finally, there is something funny about calling someone MacGuyver. It just makes you smile.

Posted by: TW Prez | April 9, 2008 11:43 AM

Nick Young- Young Gun
Dominic McGuire- MickyD (as in his excellent defense)

Roger Mason: The Masonic Eye
(aside from his long-range accuracy, it also alludes to the fact that he is about to be sitting on a LOT of "dollah dollah bills, y'all")

Posted by: DY | April 9, 2008 11:46 AM

I would add, google image "masonic eye". You can't tell me that the marketing possibilities aren't endless.

Posted by: DY | April 9, 2008 11:55 AM

stolen from my son, Bobtimist Prime, for Mason, "the Wheaton Weapon."

Posted by: sumplmg | April 9, 2008 12:04 PM

1) Dominic "The Junk Yard Bull Dogg" McGuire in reference to his hustle and Fresno State ties

2) Roger Assassi-Mason as in "Roger has hit his fifth three-pointer of the fourth quarter, we're witnessing the Assassi-Mason of the Supersonics 17-point lead "

Posted by: CN | April 9, 2008 12:07 PM

Oh yeah, for Jesus Colome, easily "Gluteus Ulcerous"

Posted by: CN | April 9, 2008 12:11 PM

Darn, I like MickyD for McGuire that someone else used but how bout Roger "Rapid Fire" Mason.

Roger Mason- The Threemason Lodger, or just Threemason, as a play on Freemasons and their lodge- no disrespect.

Posted by: ReubenSands | April 9, 2008 12:27 PM

This has nothing to do with Mason's skills, but we (my friends and I) call Mason "Crab Man" because he looks like the dude who plays Crab Man on "My Name is Earl."

Posted by: Duffman | April 9, 2008 12:30 PM

roger is and always be QUAKER

Posted by: rfzonadc | April 9, 2008 12:39 PM

for Roger Mason I say "Rain Man" as well, dude can make it pour!

www.WizardsExtreme.com

Posted by: WizardsExtreme.com | April 9, 2008 12:53 PM

Wow, guys, so far there are some really good ones. I'm reading, I'm reading. I feel like "Big Tig" at the came -- some names make me kufaw in approval and some proposals make me want to say "Oh oh!"

LOL

(And of course the wig is more important than the tickets, Dan! C'mon, the wig ROCKS!!)

Dan's right -- you can enter multiple times. Enter by noon at Friday and precisely at by 8 pm on Friday I'll announce the winners -- in this thread -- with a verified ISP ping for my identity kindly supplied by Dan Steinberg. Allegedly. Could be lying about that. LOL.

Ah, the judge is insane. Carry on, carry on! Very good start. Very good prizes. Let's do this!

GO WIZARDS!! I'm going tonight. I'll be wearing my Gilbert "Vote for Gilbert" sneakers!

Posted by: Nancy | April 9, 2008 1:17 PM

Roger "Jerusalem Juice" Mason, Jr.

The alliteration alone has to be worth a few points...

Posted by: leonl | April 9, 2008 1:19 PM

rfzonadc, is Roger already "Quaker"? How so? True?

Hmm, re "Mac Attack" -- I like that, only it's McGuire as in "Mic". That's the right idea though for McGuire . . .

DY, enter again! "Masonic Eye" is just scaring me, lol.

McRebound is intriguing.

Keep 'em coming. Enter early, enter often.

Posted by: Nancy | April 9, 2008 1:31 PM

Roger "Mase In Your Face" Mason or just "In Your Face Mase".

"Dominic McRebound" or "Dominic McNasty"

Posted by: djsuk | April 9, 2008 1:35 PM

Mason- Roscoe Jennnkins!!!!!

Dominic- Get-It!!!

Posted by: howr-he | April 9, 2008 1:38 PM

P.S. Didn't know Dan would quote me on the complaint re the bobblehead likeness. No getting away from it: Phil Chenier as these very distinctive eyes, and it's weird they couldn't capture them. But, such artistic quabbling aside, it's still a REALLY cool bobblehead giveaway, and I think it was nice of Chipotle go sponsor it, for the record. So it's rightfully listed as my number one gift. It's just a cool, one-of-a-kind thing. They really bobble, and it's really cool.

I just LOVE our Wizards announcers. They really know basketball and the Wizards. So although I personally find bobbleheads (like clowns) a little scarey, this one's a keeper!

Posted by: Nancy | April 9, 2008 1:41 PM

Since the day he got drafted, Dominic Mcguire has been "Baby AK". His game is the same as Andrei Kirilenko's aka AK-47. They both stuff the stat sheet with steals, blocks, rebounds, etc. When McGuire develops and gets time, he will be more widely accepted as Baby AK.

Roger Mason is "The Swish Mason", obviously a play on the term "brick mason." Get it? Swish as opposed to brick?

Also, I went to Good Counsel with Roger Mason, and I was never good at defense.

Posted by: Dave Olson | April 9, 2008 1:44 PM

'The Live Wire' Dom McGuire.

An infusion of instant energy. Electrifying.

Also: all the nicknames I dropped when he was drafted--

(Hmmn, it doesn't seem to like my links, so I'l redact and retract 'em)

Like:
Dominator. McGruff the crime dawg. DMac the damager.

---

For Mase (no junior).

I've taken to calling him the "Maser".
Like a microwave laser.
an unfazed, long-range, mistake eraser
A pop up sniper behind an embrasure
Gets inside your mind like the psychopop Frasier

uh, or something.
check your wikipedia for definitions of maser and embrasure.

McGuire - "Dominator"
Mason Jr. - "Agent 3"

Posted by: ebaggg | April 9, 2008 1:58 PM

When I was a kid Roger Mason was one of the camp counselors at Good Counsel basketball camp. So how about just "The Camp Counselor" so Buckhantz can yell stuff like "The Camp Counselor is putting on a shooting clinic today," "Dagger!! Roger Mason hits the three and camp is over for today kids," and "I don't understand that call Phil, his man may be bleeding, but in my mind The Camp Counselor, nor any other Wizard for that matter, has ever committed a foul."

As for Dominic McGuire, I like the Baby AK suggestion above, that way when he is playing in Russia two years from now fans there will be able to relate to him more easily.

Posted by: Jesse | April 9, 2008 2:10 PM

Good news/bad news:

Regarding tickets and gifts and such:

The Indiana tickets are "ticketfast" tickets I purchased, so I can email them to the winner. No need for evening meetings at Metro entrances.

Bad news: These aren't lower level. They're upper. Hey, they get you in the building! For the last home game of the regular season this coming Monday.

The Wizards wig and the bobblehead I can just mail to the winners.

Go Wizards! I hope we win tonight!

Posted by: Nancy | April 9, 2008 2:17 PM

1) Dominic "The Hitman" McGuire, since he's always coming off the bench for hire...

2) "Mr. Rogers" Mason. Then we have an excuse to make a pic like this...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/15366782@N08/2400837427/

Posted by: crucinator | April 9, 2008 2:53 PM

Dominic McGuire - Big Mac...self explanatory?

Roger Mason - The Arc Man

1. It sounds a little a cheesy but get this, he is an architecture. They always show him building his house and floor plans on Comcast sportsnet, so 'arc' comes from 'arc-hitecture'

2. Roger Mason pretty much lives behind the 'arc' when playing basketball draining 3's all day.

So the 'Arc Man' would define his personality on and off the court.

Posted by: Will from Rockville | April 9, 2008 2:54 PM

Dominic McGuire: Run DMc.

Posted by: DC Pro Sports Report | April 9, 2008 2:59 PM

Over at Bullets Forever, we've been calling Dom McGuire "Taser" since before the regular season began (he and Nick Young form the combo Laser and Taser). As I posted at BF when I coined the names, McGuire is "a high-voltage stunner who knocks them on their can. When he crams one on some dude's melon, I'll yell, 'Don't Tase me, bro.' "

For Mason, I like The Sniper, since he's a deadly-accurate gunner.

Posted by: Vanilla Gorilla | April 9, 2008 3:24 PM

dmac the high ball because he look high all the time, and roger mason look like a little monster so call him head because that all you see

Posted by: frankie jude | April 9, 2008 3:34 PM

Dominic McGuire = 'Glass Wipe'

I've heard some call RMJ the Silent Assassin.

Personally, I like the Foreman Grill (Roger heats up off the bench a la Vinnie 'The Microwave' Johnson).

That being said, you could always go with 'Microwave 2.0' - if you're a knock-off type of person.

Or....Roger Mason, Jr. = The Potomac Rainmaker

Posted by: TruthAboutIt.net | April 9, 2008 4:11 PM

Ebagg == Agent 3, that's intriguing.

Dominator is nice.

Run DMc is nice too . . . kinda late 80s?

Posted by: Nancy | April 9, 2008 4:32 PM

Dominic McGuire = Gandalf

Both Wizards and debatably the best rebounders on their respective teams. I think you could make a case for Legolas (Jamison?), but Gandalf has the height advantage and spell casting ability, which is not to be underrated. Besides, it wouldn't be difficult to build the case for Legolas having a superior jump shot. Also, Gandalf a.k.a. Dominic McGuire grew up in the shadow of another Wizard (Nick Young, like a Saruman that never turned evil -- yet).

Roger Mason = Boneyard

Don't ask why. It just sounds right.

Posted by: Jon | April 9, 2008 4:44 PM

Yeah I was calling him the Dominator coming out of college since it seemed like every one was missing the fact that he had more blocks per minute than Greg Oden (and equivalent assists to 'point forward' Jeff Green).

He'll be good, he just needs to build a notch more upper body strength and get the confidence to throw it down in traffic, not try to finesse it in all the time.

Google 'doclinkin macguire dominator' to catch some of the more immoderate predictions and enthusiasm.

I still think he'll be darned good when it all evens out.

Posted by: doclinkin | April 9, 2008 5:14 PM

For Dom:
"McDeegree" because he SCHOOLS people on defense!

I still stand by "Masonic Eye" (Come on. Imagine Stevie Buckhantz yelling, "Roger 'Masonic Eye' Mason shoots! AAAAAND he's on the money!" It just works on so many levels.)

BUT how about "The Wahoo Wizard" or, alternatively, "The Wahoo Wonder"

Posted by: DY | April 9, 2008 11:17 PM

LOL, DY, Um, I just don't know. I might make an Honorable Mention prize just outta pity for ya.

(And because I sat tonight, at the Wiz v. Celtics game, in rich people seats and they all left their playoff t-shirts behind, and I scooped 'em up, so I've got like 4 of them now.)

doclinkin realgm.com -- both of your entries are real strong.

well, there's time to think people. Y'all have until Friday at noon. And then some time Friday evening, perhaps closer to 10 pm than 8 pm, I announce the winners.

Agent Stein: The t-shirt says "Back for More" and pictures Gilbert Arenas. It's a GREAT playoff t-shirt, as you WOULD know if you had gone to the Wizards game tonight! :P

Wow, what a game. What a game. Gil slid right in and played so well -- steals and assist and everything -- and Jamison was just ferocious. And how about that Butler/Pierce matchup? Those guys are really going at it with each other. Antonio Daniels is such a pro -- it's so great to watch him play, a total team player.

A real team effort tonight. Including really good D from Maser, one of my leadng favorites so far for Mason.

Maser -- lol, doc explains:

"I've taken to calling him the "Maser".
Like a microwave laser.
an unfazed, long-range, mistake eraser
A pop up sniper behind an embrasure
Gets inside your mind like the psychopop Frasieray to go!"

Um, wow. Certainly an entry in the spirit of the contest. (Which, as per usual, will be judged by me, randomly, Friday evening, with possibly extensive input from my cats.)

Posted by: Nancy | April 9, 2008 11:59 PM

#5 Dominic McGuire= McFly (explanation unnecessary. Where he's going he doesn't need roads.)

#8 Roger Mason, Jr.= Any of the above posted nicknames would be priceless coming from Buckhantz's mouth with the authority of a DAGGERRRR (i vote for Assassi-mason or Camp Counselor or ThreeMason. and Roger That)

Posted by: CK in GA from VA | April 10, 2008 12:04 AM

McGuire: MC Hammer

Posted by: Mike | April 10, 2008 4:22 AM

CK in GA from VA,

I like McFly. LOL, "Roger that." I dunno. Assisi-Mason is too derivative of Gilbert and the Assinator, no?

Hmm, thanks for saying what you do like in other entries too.

I hope for more entries. Dan Steinberg has said people can enter 93 times.

Posted by: Nancy | April 10, 2008 9:54 AM

Wiz Kid . short. sweet. to the point.

Posted by: Kenny | April 10, 2008 10:27 AM

The Maser also carries the alter-ego: Agent Ocho.

I still like the LiveWire Dom MacGuire.

Livewire Dom MacGuire, #5 in your roster.
Highflying shot-swatter, rebound accoster.
Unidentified outta nowhere 'what the hell?-- he flying sauced'er'.
Gritty McNasty, with a dash of finesse
marauds on the boards then passes the test
by passing the rock to the Wizard in motion,
skip pass like it's simple: as dropping rocks in the ocean.
Two points then get back on D.
MC, start the outbreak like a rockslide

(And I'd finish that rhyme but..it wasn't PG).
In either case, never mind, just send them tickets to me.

Come on... Right?

Posted by: doclinkin | April 10, 2008 11:46 AM

correcting my scan:

Two points then get back on D. (...DMC)
DMcG start the break like a rockslide
Like a tsunami change landscape

That's the rated G version.

Roger's nickname = Dr. Tre...("Nuthin' but a "3" Thang")

from your friends at the Ahern Inquirer

Posted by: Ahern Inquirer | April 10, 2008 1:11 PM

Doc! Email me at lacoatrack@aol.com and give me there your (true) first and last name. I have access to *2* sets of tickets for Monday's game, and frankly, "LiveWire" is good enough for me to be one of my two firsts. You have to give me your real first and last name because you'll need to show a real ID to pick up tickets at will call. (We'll check ISP addresses for posting to make sure email is really from you.) (I'm assuming your preference is for game tickets -- if you'd rather have the bobblehead or wizards wig, let me know)

EVERYONE:

By 10 PM on Monday I'll post a first, second, and third. But Doc has done such a good job with a name and with poetry and all that he's schooling you all on how to win one of the prizes. I'm putting a second "first" prize for him.

I also have some "Back for More" t-shirts from last night's Celtics game that I'm gonna give out. Two Honorable Mentions. So keep trying.

REMEMBER:

Judging is entirely random (by me) with substantial input from my cats, so anyone should enter because anyone can win!

Posted by: Nancy | April 10, 2008 1:39 PM

"Taser" is currently my other "first" candidate for Mason.

I have to have a winner for Mason and a winner for McGuire.

Mason strikes hard and fast, so taser is kinda nice.

Hey, guys, I have to work all this afternoon so really I think y'all have until 8 pm to enter.

I'll announce the winners at 10 pm TONIGHT.

DAN STEINBERG IS RIGHT: I HAVE EXTRA PRIZES! (Basically, got some more playoff t-shirts and someone -- a neighbor who knows I'm running this contest -- gave me another wig!)

Hmmm, McFly, Wiz Kid, hops . . . . All good ones. Keep 'em coming!!

Posted by: Nancy | April 11, 2008 11:13 AM

Slick and sleek Dominic!

Roger Can't Feel My Face'n Mason!

Posted by: smperk | April 11, 2008 11:40 AM

Dominic "Stretch" McGuire

My reason for stretch is the way his arms seem to stretch and grab rebounds that seem impossible. Reminds me of the ole school cartoon(can't quite remember the name) where the principal character could stretch to get in and out of situations. I've seen him reach over two guys and snag rebounds that makes analysts say "how in the world did he get that". Longest reach I have seen in a while.

Posted by: Lady Wizz | April 11, 2008 11:43 AM

It's not for the contest, but I just want to lay claim to "Big Pasty" for Songaila before big media types overhear me at a bar and start using it.

Dominic McGuire (since 'Glass Wipe' isn't attracting a following):

Code Name: The Cleaner (as in he cleans that glass)

Lord of the Boards

Mr. Glass (ehh....too close to S.L. Jackson in Unbreakable?)

The Gobbler (I have no idea)

Air Force Dom (kid can hop)

Springs McGuire

Vintage Dom

D-Nice

Going off "Roger That" for Mason....you could call him 'Check 3'

(I also still like Potomac Rainmaker...but it's too long)...so:

Hometown Rain

Potomac Rain

DC3

Swish

Triple Scoop

The Net Ripper

etc, etc....

Well, you have until 8 pm to enter, but you've already entered and your name isn't on the list below, you're no longer in the running and may begin (1) hurling insults at me and (2) commenting upon which of the following you like best.

In no particular order, I'm studying hard:

Nicknames for Dominic McGuire:

hops (4/11 11:03 am entry by Aaron Goldstein)

LiveWire McGuire (4/10 11:46 am entry by doclinkin)

McFly (4/10/08 12:04 am entry by CK in GA from VA)

Nicknames for Roger Mason

The Long Ranger (4/11 11:03 am entry by Aaron Goldstein)

Dr. Tre ("nuthin' but a 3 thang) (4/10 1:11 pm post by Ahern Inquirer)

Tres (4/9/08 5:56 pm entry by WizardsExtreme.com)

Maser (4/9/08 1:56 pm entry by doclinkin realgm.com)

Quaker (4/9/08 12:39 pm entry by rfzonadc)

I'm looking at a Honorable Mention for Worst Entry for "Masonic Eye" (4/9 11:17 pm entry by DY) (or should it be the "gandolf" proposal, LOL?)

I'm also considering, since I have much prizes, an Honorable Mention for Most Entries: currently I think that would be Ben (4/9/08 6:14 pm entry)

Needless to say, if your name IS on the above list, this is an ideal time to begin offering me bribes.

Dear Nancy,
Since I am really in GA and won't be able to make it to any games until the Eastern Conference finals in which we will likely take on the Pistons, I would like to forfeit any tickets I might win. My t-shirt size is L and my bobble-head collection is lacking, however, and it would do nicely with Buckhantz and Chenier while I listen to every game on NBA.com radio.
Sincerely,
CK

Correx to Ben's entry:

Ben, just a typo on your entry. You win a t-shirt or a wig, your choice.

(That thing about meeting to deliver tickets was for a ticket-winner, and I'll handle those details privately by email with them.)

Aw man, hey no fair, I didn't bribe you or nuthin' since you told me I'd already won. I would've written a poem about your cats or something...

Can I call the league office about this?

-doc disappointed.

Wait! Nevermind. Thanks Nancy!

Nothing fancy
just a true blue die hard Wizard fan, see
she's got so much love for the squad she
's got to share it
If I get an XL shirt I'll happily wear it

Hey, I've been to plenty of Wizards games doc....so if you'd rather exchange the shirt for the tickets, I'd be down with that.

I still have 2 (cheapo) tickets to tonight's game to give to Wizards extreme. If this winner doesn't contact me by 3 pm, I'm giving them to Aaron Golstein of "The Long Ranger" entry if Aaron wants 'em.
