Nats Inner Harbor Invasion Aftermath

You want a priceless reaction from an owner upon being asked to respond to a chicken/eagle/freak mascot and some Giant Racing President Heads passing out brochures and carrying confrontational signs just blocks from the stadium where his team plays? How about this one, from the Baltimore Sun:
Years ago, a Washington team promoting itself in downtown Baltimore might have seemed like an enemy incursion. But Angelos, when apprised of the event yesterday, said: "It doesn't strike me in any particular way. They're welcome to do that. It's a free country," Angelos said. "It [Baltimore and Washington] is one huge megalopolis, you know? It's about time we realize it."
"It's a free country!" Brills! Upon being told that Giant Racing Thomas was carrying a sign that read "Old Bay Stinks," Mr. Angelos no doubt replied "Sticks and Stones may break my bones but names about my distinctive regional spice combinations will never hurt me." I mean, either go funny ("Politicians will say anything," Angelos pointed out) or go angry ("Get those kids off my lawn!" Angelos said), but the quiet, "doesn't strike me in any particular way" passive aggression is fairly lame.
Other signs: Teddy ("I'll race the Orioles bird and beat him!"), Abe ("Honestly, the Nats will sweep Baltimore, hun!") If you want the earnest, what-it-all-means version, go to Nats320, which says "The past is history and it's time to enjoy the fun possibilities between Our Washington Nationals and The Baltimore Orioles--like these kids yesterday afternoon at The Inner Harbor in Baltimore." Me, I'm waiting for the Teddy-Oriole Bird bloodbath.

I'm delighted to know Birdland has an all-you-can-eat club section for a decent price. The seating and ushers are nice, as long as you like to talk with older folks that love to talk.
Boog's BBQ is more overrated than LeBron. Who wants to eat an $11 pork sandwich that is served COLD on a COLD bun with NO condiments?

Sweet. Hey Steve Bisciotti, maybe you should hold this up to the NFL league office as an example of why encroaching into another team's league-designated marketing territory is a good thing! Put those Raven's cheerleaders to work a block away from FastDelivery Field and over at the Metro station there with their game game gear and pom-poms cheering about how the Skins stink and how Danny Snyder is an A-whole-lotta-loser. Think about those charming potential photo ops with Edgar, Allen, and Poe down at the Tidal Basin offering a consoling embrace to a be-decked Redskins fan for all the years of suffering under the present ownership regime. Works in baseball, right?
If I ever see Teddy in my city again, he's going into the Harbor where he belongs - with all the other trash in the city.

Suck it Giant Head Abe Lincoln!

Don't complain about the $11 sammich. Isn't $11 the same fee you have to pay for e-tix to the game down in DC? Which would you rather eat, a cold sammich or a piece of paper?

I'd love to see the Ratbirds send their cheerleaders to The Boulevard at Cap Centre or at the Sears at what once was Landover Mall. They'd so fit in there...
And the mascots at the Tidal Basin??? Sure why not??? The tourists on the Paddle Boats wouldn't have clue to as to who they are anyway lettalone the reference...

Teddy's going to win his first race this Saturday ... at Pimlico!

It's amazing what a ludicrous pay off and MASN have done to Angelos and his thoughts in Washington baseball. 6 years ago Washington baseball was unfair -- now it's a "free country".

Where are Miss D.C. and Anna Benson when you really need them--I mean REALLY? Okay, okay, with all due respect, I'll take Debbi Taylor vs. Amber Theoharis in a Jello/mud wrestling match, pretty please.
GO, NATS!

Megalopolis? With his stranglehold on MASN, it's more like an Angelopolis.

I have always wondered why Washington fans get so worked up over Angelos' attempts to preserve his franchise. There is no question that the Nats being in town adversely affects the Orioles. Granted, winning would solve everything for the O's, but, still, the fact of the matter is that a team in Washington will/has hurt the O's. Pretty cut and dry. So, why then would Angelos sit there and say "Hey, yea, move on into the area Nats!! It's not like I am a business man or anything!! I don't care about revenue and the long term viability of my team!! It's all fun and games!!"
I am thrilled that a team is in D.C. now. I root for both of them and have season tix to the Nats. But, I never felt the need to be a crybaby about the situation and bash Angelos for trying to protect his franchise's interests. I criticise him for how he has screwed up the O's with personnel issues, but to criticise the guy for not gleefully wanting lose the revenue of the area's casual O's fans is stupid.

steinberg, I don't see the passive aggression. Nationals mascots came down to Baltimore and insulted Baltimorean culture. What does Angelos care? He was claiming Baltimore and Washington was a single market before, and he is claiming it is one now... only now with a vested interest.
All and all, I'm fine with the mascots coming down for a little good natured smack talking, nobody in baltimore has heard of the mascots and it is as good a way to introduce them to the Nationals franchise, but I could have done without the insult to the baltimorean accent. That was every bit as disrespectful to the people of Baltimore as it would be for Edgar, Allan and Poe to come down to D.C. and hold up signs pointing out that D.C. has no culture of its own and D.C. is a fake city. Had that happened, the press would have exploded. How is this any different?
Posted by: adam | May 16, 2008 3:14 PM
Edgar Allen Poe? Baltimore's most famous resident is Marlo Stanfield.
Posted by: McNulty | May 16, 2008 3:21 PM
Mascots, McNulty. We're talking about mascots.
Besides, Poe was from Richmond.
Posted by: adam | May 16, 2008 3:30 PM
"D.C. has no culture of its own..." Why would you even think that? D.C. has an international transient culture to it that's very much in line with the vast majority of the larger international capitals. Baltimore simply doesn't have that (but it is similar to international port cities, yes), and I'm not knocking "Bal'mer" here--which has its own history--just pointing out the obvious that you've missed. D.C. may seem fake but that's due to the political aspects more than anything.

Hm... just like the running threads about some other topics recently, it seems some fans on here need to find their sense of humor as opposed to everything being righteous indignation or personal affront.
Posted by: Grooven | May 16, 2008 6:49 PM
The problem Confused isn't Angelos "defending his franchise" as much as it was Angelos and his "there are no baseball fans in Washington" comments. If that was the case, why in the world does he care that MLB want to place a team this market? Why was he given the TV rights to a franchise that wouldn't have any support?
Furthermore, what some of us D.C. natives find infuriating is the subordinating of Washington to Bhawlmuher. It is pretty clear that the four Washington franchises do not need the Bhawlmuher market in order to survive but BOTH Bhawlmuher franchises insist upon having some sort of access to the D.C. market in order to ensure their survival. Yet Washington is somehow supposed to be subordinate to Bhawlmuher? Sorry, but if one market needs to co-opt another in order to survive, that market shouldn't be given any kind of preferences. Yet that is exactly what Bhawlmuher tries to claim.

Speaking of subordination, according to the Census Bureau from a few years ago, it is the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area. (Note: it is not alphabetical, but rather order of importance as determined by the fact that one is the capital of the nation). Not that you'd know that listening to traffic or weather reports for either city. [Pretty soon, Richmond will also be included, and it will eventually stretch up the coast all the way to Boston.]
Posted by: Grooven | May 16, 2008 10:45 PM
Arlington Pimp, I actually don't necessarily believe that D.C. is cultureless. I was illustrating a point. To send mascots to Baltimore to jokingly trash talk the Orioles is fine and amusing; but to mock the Baltimore accent and to go on about Old Bay stinking isn't insulting to the Orioles, it's insulting to Baltimoreans, and it is rude... not to the Orioles... not to Angelos... it's insulting to Baltimoreans.
Now, I'm sure there is plenty of indigenous culture in D.C., but Baltimore thinks of D.C., rightly or wrongly, as a fake city. To send mascots to D.C. to reinforce this Baltimorean point of view would be tasteless and crossing a line. How is this different?
Posted by: adam | May 16, 2008 10:48 PM
grooven, interestingly, the Census Bureau rule is actually the largest city takes first place in the name of a combined metropolitan statistical area, with the Washington-Baltimore combined designated statistical area being held as an exclusive exception to the rule, due to Washington being the national capital. When San Jose grew larger than San Francisco, its name was placed first, even though San Francisco was "more important," due to this rule.

Adam,
Thanks. Long hours of work and a lack of sleep resulted in my misspeaking. Population size, not alphabetical.
Posted by: Grooven | May 17, 2008 12:42 PM
Adam, get over it.
I identify more with DC and it's teams (United, Redskins, Caps, Wiz... in that order) but I'm an Orioles fan.
The Nats are a passing curiosity that'll be gone in 10-15 years. DC is not a Baseball city. Never has been, never will be.
On top of that, Baseball is dying.
Posted by: AlecW81 | May 17, 2008 3:10 PM
I assume Alec that the 81 refers to the year you were born?
I only point that out because people like my father, who were born and raised in D.C., were one of the many passionate baseball fans who could tell you how the many years of bad baseball teams just wore this city and its fans out. He is always quick to point out that when the team finished outside of last place that they drew huge crowds to RFK. My father has a friend who to this day still can't believe the time the Senators blew a double digit lead in the Ninth inning in Fenway Park.
There are baseball fans here and there is a baseball town waiting to emerge. Considering all the obstacles this team has placed in front of it, the Nats are more than a passing fancy and that will be gone in 10-15 years. If anybody is going to be gone in 10-15 years, it will be the B.O.'s. Because the Baltimorons will continue to abandon the team the way they abandoned the Colts.
But answer this please, if Washington wasn't a baseball town, why is its support so vital to the long-term health of the B.O.'s?
Posted by: Caps Nut | May 17, 2008 8:48 PM
Love the idea but Abe misspelled hon. why do i constantly get the feeling that the Nats promotion department really knows nothing about the area?
Posted by: pindar | May 18, 2008 2:56 PM
Pindar, I think probably because a Baltimore "AND" Washington area is a myth. If two cities have seperate media markets, then it is not an area. Sure, some people in the center have access to both markets, but Washington has no access to Baltimore media and visa versa. Most Washingtonians don't realize Hon was misspelled. There simply isn't an "area" to get.

I'm looking forward to watching the Nats attempt a sweep at Camden.
They might - might - steal one from Burres or Olson if they get lucky.
Nats are of course already lucking out as they're going to miss the ascension of Big Bird this time -- maybe they'll get to face the fire later in season.
BTW, you are totally stingy for bogarting hyperlinks in here.
