Top 5 Goals in D.C. United History
As part of Comcast SportsyNet's United
Having followed the team intermittently in the years before I began covering D.C. United tattoos and facial hair, I'm perhaps unable to judge whether these are the right five. But you, the Big Soccer-reading reader, are well able to judge this list, so feel free. Thanks to Comcast SportsyNet for the video, and don't forget to tune in to Washington Post Live this week for Steve Goff (today), Bruce Arena (tomorrow) and Ben Olsen (Thursday), plus nightly replays of D.C. United championship glories.
Oh, and I mentioned to Ben Olsen that he appears on this list. "That's [unprintable word], that's my quote," he said. "Do you even know what a goal is?"
I tried to point out that I hadn't technically compiled this video, but he wasn't listening. He also would take the No. 2 goal on this list and make it No. 1. Your thoughts?

Number 1 shouldn't even be on the list. It's a fluke, silly goal. Would the best NHL goal of the year be some empty-netter, or rather some incredible, against-the-odds individual effort or amazing skill.
Kicking a ball 60 yards into a vacated net is not hard. I can do that.

perhaps when no one around you and after trying multiple times.

I thought Tony Sanneh's goal in the 1996 MLS Cup would have been among them. I thought that goal was better than Olsen's (which was pretty impressive, nonetheless).

There is a goalie though. He's just out of position. It's not like Beckham's which just won goal of the week, where the goalie is actually behind Becks, trying to score a late goal

Yeah, number 1 isn't even as good as any of the three goals from the 2004 Eastern Conference finals, two of which (Esky ridiculous blast and Gomez' even more ridiculous header off an Earnie Stewart cross) could easily be on this list. I'm also partial to Gomez' sombrero move and finish vs. Chivas (or was it the Galaxy) in LA a couple of years ago. The Freddy sombrero vs. Salt Lake is also top quality - I had that game on "Keep Until I Delete" status for about two years, just to watch that goal from time to time.

Etcheverry's 2007 Goal of the Year should be #1. Most amazing footwork I've ever seen.
Posted by: PowerBoater | June 3, 2008 1:50 PM
1997 not 2007 of course

Ed, it was at Chivas, summer of 2006. Goff was off in Germany. I remember watching that goal late-night with Limarzi on the call, I believe. Best I've seen since I started watching these guys. A DCU front-office type just mentioned that goal in conjunction with this list.

Top Goals in DCU History...Pope's header should be number 1.
and I agree, nothing from the 2004 Eastern Conference Final making the top 5? Scandalous!

Actually it was the Galaxy as the look on Kevin Hartman's face was priceless.
So many better goals that should have made the list including the aforementioned. One example is Eric Denton's goal over Erpen's. Neither Erpen nor Diablo's bombs deserve to be on the list. Esky had about a half dozen sick volleys that were better. Also, how can not a single one of Moreno's 70+ goals from the run of play be included? CSN needed someone from the team to help with the process. Love the coverage, but it could have been better.

Dang, you're right, my bad. Early June 2006, 1-1. Totally had that wrong.

Mid '90s, Moreno all alone, runs ~85 yards from the left side of the DC zone to the right side of the opponent's goal area, blows by about four people along the way, scores.
Where would one find that video?

"Actually it was the Galaxy as the look on Kevin Hartman's face was priceless."
Better than the look on his face when Gori snuck up behind him in '97 or '98?

Yeah, I can't believe Gori's steal off of Hartman didn't make the list. One of a kind in DC history. Cheeky. It was his first game back from injury too. THAT should be on here.
Um, the fact that Etcheverry's magical goal from '97 isn't on here pretty much invalidates the list. If you take away "importance of the moment", that's the greatest goal in DC history.

how do you pick 5 out of all those hundreds of goals? And what criteria do you use? Prettiness? Drama? Importance of the match? Difficulty?
Posted by: Glenn | June 3, 2008 2:54 PM
Fun clips, but there are loads better goals than those in terms of beauty/difficulty/teamwork/individual brilliance.
Pope's was good for its importance.
Olsen's was good for the sheer release of frustration that the team and the fans felt after that goal (United were winless up to that point in the season).
Marco's was good for circus value.
Erpen's? A good shot, but there have been other more fearsome long-range bombs.
Gros' was good as an example of a diving header, but there have been many other diving header goals.
Of all those, I think only Pope's should be on the list.
My other 4 (in no particular order)
-Marco's mazy dribble in 2007
-Abdul Thompson Conteh's finish of a flowing movement involving half the team in 200(2?)
-Jaime's finish of a flowing movement involving half the team in 199(8)?
-Eric Denton's mazy dribble *and* swerving long range drive against San Jose in 200(0)?

"Also, how can not a single one of Moreno's 70+ goals from the run of play be included?"
Not the highest degree of difficulty, but I've always been partial to the "You just got *BURNED* Jonny Walker!" goal. :-D

I thought Jaime's bicycle kick against Chivas (Mex) last year was pretty awesome. Boswell's goal against Chelsea was pretty memorable too.

Marco 1997 possibly the best goal in the history of the league and not even in DC's top 5?
Posted by: Matthai | June 3, 2008 3:40 PM
keep in mind that this should actually be called "Top 5 Goals in D.C. United History that a lone Comcast Sportsnet producer could get his hands on with less than a week's notice while also taking care of producer and editing all other features that will air during DC United Championship Week"

Moreno pulled off this feat, not for United, but for Bolivia against the U.S. national team. In fact, at the time he was playing in England, and it was this performance that induced United to acquire him from Middlesbrough.

Thanks, littles. You did a good job.

what about pope's slidng goal to beat that brazilian team which made dcu the top club in the entire western hemisphere?
Posted by: Anonymous | June 4, 2008 2:08 AM
I would have included Etcheverry's rediculous footwork goal from 1997 as #1. But the important thing is the coverage. The team needs to be seen in as many formats as possible. So I'm glad Dan is gettin gthis out there.
