Mike Sellers is Scared of Snakes

How do I know Mike Sellers is scared of snakes? Well, it's complicated. Sellers was discussing his trip to Orlando with Chris Samuels to test high-tech inner tubes for Boating Life Magazine. Sellers was mentioning that he was such a big strong tough guy in the face of high speeds and extensive open water tumbling routines, and that fear wasn't a part of his inner-tubing vocabulary. On the other hand...

"Chris is a big chicken," Sellers said. "Ask Chris if he can wake board. He can't. He's scared. Tell him I said that."

It was a charge Samuels didn't even attempt to debate.

New tattoo, in foreign language.

"People looked through the magazine and some of my teammates were kind of ragging on me because I had some scaredy faces on there," Samuels admitted. "I WAS scared. I'm not gonna even sit here and lie and play macho about it. Mike was challenging the guy to kill me. Me, I'm not like that. I was a little nervous."

Sellers's girlfriend, Jane Everets, also ventured out to sea, and she confirmed that Sellers was scared neither of inner tubes nor wake boards nor anything else in the world.

"Except snakes," she noted. "You can't even joke with him about snakes. He is deathly, extremely scared. I threw a fake snake on him; he wouldn't talk to me for two hours, that's how bad it was."

"I do not play," he confirmed, when asked about the reptiles. "I'm deathly afraid. It's a phobia. I do NOT like snakes, at all. Seriously, I mean, nothing does scare me, but snakes? The skirt goes up."

(In other Sellers toughness news, he had "strength, honor, discipline, loyalty" tattooed on his right arm in a foreign language, although he wasn't quite sure which language. "Japanese or Chinese, one of them, I don't know," he said with a laugh. "I just looked it up and said, 'I want that, I want that and I want that.' "

Why strength, honor, discipline and loyalty?

"Something I feel I live by, something that means something to me that I don't feel I have to erase," he said.

And why not English?

"Tacky," he said.)

As for the inner tubes, the gig was arranged by one of Samuels's representatives, as part of his attempt to get some more offseason exposure. Samuels rides jet skis on the Potomac and likes being on the water, but he did struggle with some of the tasks, proving unable to get up on a wake board. He admitted that Sellers was fearless; 'he's crazy, though, he can't help it," Samuels pointed out.

I also asked Sellers whether he learned anything from the experience.

"How to crash and how not to let alligators bite me," he said.
