Baseball on the Brink?

It seemed like we'd never get to this point. But within another 36 hours it is possible, maybe even probable, that the D.C. Council will at last vote on the baseball stadium lease. The lease remains on the council's agenda for the legislative meeting Tuesday, but it is still possible that Chairman Linda W. Cropp (D) could pull it and delay the vote if she believes her colleagues need more time to review the lease and other documents submitted last week by Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D).

On Tuesday, the council will hold a closed-door breakfast meeting and, most likely, argue about the stadium deal. Then, if Cropp keeps the vote on schedule, look for a lot of posturing and long speeches from members on the dias when the debate begins. The council chambers, on the 5th floor of the John A. Wilson Building, will probably be packed with the usual suspects -- red Nationals' cap-wearing stadium supporters and the loose coalition of social activists who are against the deal.

To refresh your memories about the specifics, read my stories at http://washingtonpost.com. Or you can also visit some other web sites. Here is Mayor Williams's baseball corner, where you can read many of the letters and reports he has given to the council. Also, here is a report from the D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute, a liberal thinktank, which is protesting the stadium deal.

And finally, if you want to watch the council proceedings on Tuesday, you can do so on D.C. Cable channel 13 or patch into the live Internet feed on the council's Web site - go to the site and scroll down on the main page to "watch hearings live."

The council hearing is about more than baseball and there is no telling when the meeting, usually scheduled to start at 10 a.m., will begin or when the council will get to the lease deal.

So now is your chance to weigh in -- give us your predictions on which way the council will vote. What will be the final total? What will the swing voters -- Kwame Brown, Vince Gray, Carol Schwartz and Phil Mendelson-- do? And how about Marion Barry, who some mayoral aides believe is still a potential supporter? You make the call by responding on the comments link below this entry.

Just read about Pres. Bush's commitment of money to build a new downtown public library. Please tell me its not going to be named after Laura Bush just like Senator Mitch McConnell's $14 million taxpayer gift "earmark" to name a University of Louisville library auditorium after his wife Labor Secretary Elaine Chou?? Don't you agree that the main DC Public Library should continue to honor Dr. Martin Luther King?

Posted by: | February 6, 2006 10:13 AM

Thanks for writing in. The library would still be named for Martin Luther King Jr. -- that fact is noted in the story I wrote for this morning's paper, albeit about two-thirds of the way down. City officials very much want to continue to honor the slain civil rights leaders. Butthey also are hopeful that by keeping the King name they will win over at least some city residents who are less concerned about where the library is located than what it stands for. That said, other city activists are very committed to the 34-year-old King library building and say the library should remain there. The recently released draft report on overhauling the D.C. library system is viewable at www.dclibrary.org.

I think this will be the best blog site in town in a week. Nothing is more fun to talk about or more opinionated than DC Politics and its observers. So, just to get the ball rolling - I'll predict that Baseball will pass because no one really wants to be known as the Councilmember who killed baseball for the City. Also at least two Councilmembers believe they won't win their desired jobs without a Mayoral endorsement that could be tied to baseball. Finally, I now have mixed feelings about DC Baseball after reading Colbert King's article on Saturday about leading frontrunner owner Fred Malik's past evil deeds. Can you post a link to that article? Your thoughts?

I hope this site is more useful that DCist, which is unreliable and dead-set against the new ballpark. It makes it very hard to take the site seriously.

I love professional sports.

But the bottom line with the District, the National's, MLB, and this deal is:

If it ain't legally binding up front, then it aint gonna happen. I've seen the renigue move time and time again in this city.

$535 Million. PERIOD.....That should be our stake. No If's, And's, But's, or Maybe's...

THIS Mayor will leave and the "DISTRICT" taxpayers will be sadled with the responsibility to finance an unfair deal, and, of course the National Hospital deal that has, to date, ignored medical professional opinion.

But, of course, this is an upcoming election year. A bad vote here, will most likely land many of the Council members in the political unemployment line.

Remember....Only DISTRICT residents vote for DISTRICT representatives.

Hey David - you mentioned in your blog entry that Mendelson is one of the four swing voters...but then on your chat this afternoon, you said that he was firmly entrenched in the "No" camp.

Did you learn something today that essentially assured you that Mendelson is going to vote against the stadium? Or, is there still a glimmer of hope that he'll (wise up and) vote in favor of the stadium?

I honestly cannot see how these council members are being so obtuse not to see the benefits that a baseball stadium would bring to near SE. Sure, the development was already underway before the baseball stadium site was selected, but the same could be said for Gallery Place/Chinatown. The MCI/Verizon Center just made that development happen sooner. The "No Public Money" position taken by Fenty and Catania, et al, is specious - this money (1) would not be available but for the stadium and (2) will be brought back into the city's coffers from the new tax revenues created by the stadium and its surrounds.

I haven't a clue how the vote will turn out tomorrow...

Posted by: | February 6, 2006 02:14 PM

If the Council votes against the lease, then this city will once again become the laughing stock of the country, much like it was during the bad old days of former "Mayor for Life", Count Crackula. Speaking of him, to secure his "yes" vote, why not offer to name the new stadium after him!! Additionally, those Council members that are trying to use this vote as a "DC vs. the Suburbs" ploy (and they know who they are), are doing nothing more than playing the race card, and it is way past time that this card was taken out of the deck for good. Sure, most of the fans come from the `burbs, but these knuckleheads seem to be forgetting that the fans are spending their money IN DC! Bottom line- let's get this deal done! Go Nats!!

Posted by: DJH | February 6, 2006 02:22 PM

Race Card?

I don't see that at all...You have your head stuck in the 60's or perhaps the OJ trial. It is all about economics and taxpayers.

The residents in the District are taxed higher than any other jurisdiction in the NATION.

It is easy for arrogant suburbanites to overlook this particular fact.

Everytime you turn around there is a new or higher fee put in place for the residents to pay. Perhaps this would be a good time to being up the commuter tax again.

Ohh, no, of course not, you prefer to prostitute the tax dollars of the District residents. I don't see any suburban jurisdictions making one inkling of an iota of a gesture to participate in brokering this deal.

If you want the team, get YOUR County to build the stadium there using your STATE, COUNTY, and LOCAL Tax Dollars.

THAT is the Bottom Line.

Posted by: ProBallDC | February 6, 2006 02:40 PM

ProBallDC, where exactly do you see that "the 'DISTRICT' taxpayers will be sadled with the responsibility to finance an unfair deal"?

I see in the lease (and its various changes) where the stadium will pay mostly for itself. I see where there will be a tax on the largest business in the District. I see where there is a tax on utilities, which the Federal government will mostly bear. Perhaps it is the rest of that utility tax to which you're referring?

The majority of residents also fail to grasp that there will be an excess of money generated from the stadium and accompanying taxes ... excess that will go to schools, recreation, and other pet projects for which opposing activists have been crying.

Just wondering if the Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority is lurking along the Potomac River hoping the stadium deal in DC falls through. I'm sure Gabe Paul Jr has a front row seat somewhere.
What is the status of that Authority?

Posted by: Neal | February 6, 2006 11:12 PM

ProBallDC--

Actually, I am a suburbanite who happens to work for the DC Government (22 years and counting), and I am in favor of a commuter tax. And no, I am not stuck in the 60's - maybe just stuck with the realities of political life in the District, where race politics is always right below the surface. And by the way, why should any suburban jurisdictions "make any gestures to broker this deal"? DC got the Nationals, so it's their deal. One more thing, Robbie is absolutely right.

What a difference does it make, a US born and US naturalized citizen? just a VEEP and US Presidency positions. How many people will run for these two positions, less than 10 every 4 years. Be yourself, represent yourself in this Temple of success, you will put 'ketchups' on your families tables. They depend on you. This country did let its First Lady, Jacky Kennedy sharing bed and kisses with a World 'Don Juan' Onassis (easy with our then intelligence capabilities), we are witnessing gay men getting more news coverage despite STDs, chamilia,.. association, be yourself, you will capitalize on this land of the free.
Reruns and other questionable practices are only used by politicians looking for news coverage while losing real value; to paraphrase, Bob Dole, 'just say no' to these practices
