Praise for Barry
Just nine hours before D.C. Council member Marion Barry was to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Deborah A. Robinson for failing to file tax returns for six years, he was lauded by the mayor.
Mayor Anthony A. Williams publicly complimented Barry for his role in getting the baseball lease agreement approved in the 9-4 vote at 12:46 a.m.
A few minutes after the vote, Williams came downstairs in the District Building to shake hands with the council members. He started with Barry. Williams then told reporters that Barry "showed real leadership" in improving the deal. People in the neighborhoods will be able to "see and feel" the benefits of Barry's efforts.
Barry, wearing a red Nats cap, successfully pushed to put any excess money from development rights, after the stadium land is purchased and cleaned up, into the Community Benefits Fund.
When I told Barry what the mayor said, he smiled and said: "I think the mayor was accurate."

How can you be so stupid as to vote a "Crack Head " into office ???? Not just getting caught once? There is something seriously wrong with your DC people!

gee 'cindi', is that worse than you voting for a pathological liar for president? ;)

Question for VM Sr. Which pathological liar President are you referring to?? Is it the one who said "I did not have s.x with that woman!"
Posted by: Dennis | February 8, 2006 03:27 PM
um no dennis that would be the current liar :)
Posted by: virgin mary sr | February 8, 2006 03:37 PM
yes. i also give a big thumbs up to barry! i watched too and i was impressed at his ability to bring clarity to what was included in the cap agreement as well as his requirement for monthly reporting of expenses to the council. barry may still have some usefulness after all...

I don't think one lie makes someone pathological...at least no one died when Clinton lied, DENNIS! Bush continues to lie and people continue to die -- and we impeached Clinton for lying??? Whatever.

I have personally spoken with Barry my self, and despite his personal setbacks he is intelligent and wise as ever, we all have personal demons...greed, addiction, lust,...the list goes on and on some worse than others it is always easy to stand on a soap box and point the finger...Barry has not always made the best personal decisions but he has always been man enough to take responsibility for his decisions, unlike the current liar who runs the country into the ground with lie after lie, death after death how is that Americans stand for this ? help me understand this! ....and if someone out has an explanation please omit any TV talking points.

I'm not a Barry fan and certainly never voted for him. Never the less, I respect his talent and brains, if not his ethics (or lack thereof).
Marion is the type of larger than life figure about whom novels are written. This man is a fundamentally tragic figure - smart but weak, holds sway over others but not over his addictions, a former civil rights leader who now plays the race card. It's all there in his sad and amazing story.
He's easy to caricature but hard to truly understand.

I'm a Democrat who longs for Bill Clinton days back...
But Marion Barry? What did the guy do in all his years in office? Crime rates, poverty, corruption...
And again and again, a terrible role model for African Americans. Lets leave Marion Barry in the past and embrace respectable African American leaders like Barack Obama. we need more role models like him for young African Americans. We don't need slimey politicians who smoke crack and cheat on their taxes.

i'm sorry if you dont like marion barry. unlike you, some of us are not perfect. when terrorist took over dc city hall it was marion barry who got took the bullets. the transition from plantation politics to home rule isnt complete nor has been easy.
he's been an advocate for the least and the lost. and when he knocked-off councilmember rolark, the homophobe, he did everybody in civilrights a favor.

To anyone defending Barry, I think that you seriously need to go have your head examined. I think that his flaws go way farther than 'not being perfect'.
He is a degenerate,crack-head, tax evader. And, that is just the stuff that he has gotten caught doing.
And people wonder why DC is such a haven for drugs and crime.

On another note- if the last update is at 9:30 am, that's not a blog. That's a "newspaper."

How much longer will DC continue to let Barry embarass the city, just as he did again in Court. Yes, I'm well aware that only the citizens of Ward 8 elected him. But I think it's beyond high time that the Council (at least) censure him. If you agree, call your councilmember and tell him or her so.

I did my own speculations on what would happen should Marion Barry go to prison. That's the joy of blogging: whatever pops into your head, you can run with it...

Lets not forget in one of the halucinations Barry suffered as a result of his crack using, he claims he was held up at gun point. Then he argues on behalf of them, quoted in the Post as being a "friend to the husslers" in the city and wants them not to be prosecuted. Why not, Mr. Barry? So they can mug me at gun point?? I bet we will one day find out that was a drug deal gone bad. Marion Barry is a disgrace. The guy has smoked so much crack he can't even put a thought together when speaking in public. I find it amazing that law allows for people who don't pay taxes to run for city council and vote on the alotment and disbursement of tax revenue. Unreal.

Did Barry sell his vote for a Nationals baseball cap?

It is better to forgive ,than revile. One wonders if the IRS will be impressed ? It's rather a sad reflection on others who serve in public life.Doubtless we are all flawed ,some more than others.
Mr Barry demeans the offices he has held & holds. There is one decent thing left to him;retire to private life.

Yeah, I watched him succeed in that on channel 13. My thought at the time, which still lingers, is: Who controls payouts from the community benefit fund?
