And the Winner Is...

Now there finally comes a mayoral candidates forum that promises, without a doubt, to be fun. The Ward 6 Democrats are taking a straw poll tonight. Sorry, you probably can't vote in it-- registered Ward 6 Democrats only -- but it still will be a talker. Who will come in first place? Second? Third? Last?

The Ward 6 Democrats will have a short meeting at 7 p.m. The straw poll will take place immediately after that meeting from 7:30 -9:30 p.m. at Eastern Senior High School. The mayoral candidates will take center stage in the school's auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

For months independent polls have said it's a two-way race between Council chairman Linda W. Cropp and the two-term council member Adrian M. Fenty (D-Ward 4). Will the first public vote prove this to be true, and if so, who will win? Third place promises to be just as interesting. Will it be Council member Vincent B. Orange Sr. (D-Ward 5), former telecommunications executive Marie C. Johns or Lobbyist Michael A. Brown? Will anyone drop out before time to pick up nominating petitions in May?

Let's take a look at the obvious: Orange and Johns have both raised more than $300,000, and Orange has been on the council for two terms. If Johns comes in third place, is it a signal that her campaign is gaining momentum? Brown, on the other hand, is behind financially. Will campaign finance reports and/or name recognition influence the voting? Will anyone be surprised if Brown, son of the late Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, comes in last place?

If our fellow DC citizens in Ward Six had any sense (and they do!) they would send Orange back to Ward Five.

...and vote for Marie Johns. Adrian Fenty is a tool.

We don't want Orange back. If he's inflicted on the entire city, at least the damage he does will be spread around, and not concentrated on Ward 5.

Marie Johns is sharp! Very smart...it's to bad most people do not know her.

At the first forum the question asked was where do we go on Wall Street to get funding for D.C.? Noone could answer the question byt Linda Cropp!!

Straw polls are as useless as campaign finance reports in determining which candidate will win the mayor's race, or candidate for any particular political race. Elections are frequently determined not by those who vote but those who don't. Candidates tend to raise huge sums of money from very few supporters. Cropp and Orange both fall in that category. Fenty looks like the candidate to beat.

None of the above is on the ballot!!! Don't be surprised if it gets quite a few votes.

Fenty is not ready to be Mayor...he has major issues in his own Ward 4...ask the residents.

Also if he couldn't handle a pro-bate case and loss that money how can he handle a budget for an entire city.

Michael Brown is a joke....everybody is laughing!

Please note, the straw poll begins at 7:30 pm, NOT 7:00 pm. Voting will remain open for two hours until 9:30 pm.

Mr. Allen, I got the time for the straw vote from a press release the Ward 6 Dems emailed yesterday. I will change the time, tho. Thanks.

Posted by: yolanda woodlee | March 30, 2006 02:48 PM

thanks yolanda, there was a typo in the press release that was sent out. a correction went out later in the day, but that probably got lost in the mix. but the voting times will parallel the forum times - 7:30 to 9:30 pm. It'll take us about 30 minutes to tally the results, so hopefully we'll be able to announce the outcome by 10:00 pm.

Fenty's the one. His own ward loves him (ask the schools and ANCs) and he's got the broadest base of supporters city-wide.
Cropp's old-school gig comes with lack of vision and too much baggage.

I find it interesting that the most common gripe people on these blogs has about Hon. Fenty is that “he is not ready to be mayor” and don’t back it up with any substantive attacks on his positions or competing defenses of the visions of other candidates.

I am a proud supporter of Adrian Fenty because I believe he has a compelling and positive vision for the city that will provide expanded economic opportunity to all. In my opinion, a Fenty Administration will provide much needed reforms to a variety of DC Agencies including the DCRA and the Board of Education and I think he has the charisma and skill to continue to make this a world class city.

To date, he is the only candidate to post substantive ideas on his website. http://www.fenty06.com/vision_for_dc.htm. I also understand that he will be releasing detailed policy papers on the specifics of his vision for the future within the next few weeks.

I am also a proud supporter because of his demonstrated track record of responding to the concerns of his constituents. It is my understanding that either he or a member of his staff have attended every community meeting of note in Ward 4 since he has become a member. He might not have all the answers, but at least Hon. Fenty has demonstrated the willingness and interest in actively solving the problems facing this great city.

But, I am rather biased.

Fenty's staff is questionable in itself, but we won't go there. To Mark you say ask the schools....you don't want to go there Coolidge is falling as we speak. LaSalle which was one of the best elementary schools in ward 4 is one of the worse.

Most of the ANC's are supporting other's check your facts.

Yes Fenty will say yes to you, me, and the next man....but one of us will be left out in the cold unless he has a twin.

I think in time he would be ready but he is not right now. The reality of it is we got slim pickin's this race.

Some are running now because when
Kwame Brown comes to the plate they can really hang it up!

As mayor Williams exits the office of the mayor, lets not allow a dark could to cover the D.C. area. Remember, the sun shines like a big "Orange" ball in the sky. See the light, Fenty is full of Cropp. D.C's next mayor is Vincent B. Orange Sr.

Its not who starts the race, its who crosses the at the finsih line.

LINDA CROPP WON THE STRAW POLL LAST NIGHT!

Posted by: | March 31, 2006 09:53 AM

Went to the Ward 6 Forum. What the candidates left me with: Cropp tried to be all things to all people; Fenty was laid back but hit some points on education;
Orange decided Reservation 13's 67 acres on the east end of Ward 6 should be turned into a special education zone with NCMC (so much for economic development); Brown spoke out against public funding for the baseball stadium; and Johns tried to connect with the voters. In the straw vote, I voted for none of the above.

I am an undecided Ward 6 Dem, and I too went to the forum last night. Overall, pretty underwhelming. Tom Sherwood was awful as moderator - couldn't even hear the questions half the time! Agree that Cropp attempted to be all things to all people...which is a shame. I was impressed with Johns and (GASP) Brown, who came across as sincere and thoughtful. I don't know if running on Williams' coattails is going to play as a successful strategy citywide. Orange was underwhelming, and Fenty showed moments of brilliance but at other times was totally disengaged. Like I said, underwhelming.

Straw is only good for feeding cows. We need a mayor, not livestock. "Vote Orange"!
