Barry Still Draws A Crowd
Council member Marion Barry's (D-Ward 8) State of Ward 8 address last night was an awkward campaign stop for the city's mayoral hopefuls. By showing up, a candidate gives credibility and visibility to an elected official who has brought shame to the nation's capital with his repeated run-ins with law enforcement authorities. Skipping the event, however, is politically toxic because no candidate wants to look like he or she is ignoring the city's poorest ward.
So all five candidates made the trek to Matthews Memorial Baptist Church. Some were more visible than others.
Lobbyist Michael Brown and council member Vincent B. Orange Sr. (D-Ward 5), who both see east of the river votes as crucial to a campaign win, showed up on time and energetically worked the crowd of approximately 300. After Barry began his hour-plus report, Council chairman Linda W. Cropp (D) walked down the center of the aisle to a spot in the front row. Former Verizon executive Marie Johns came later and discreetly grabbed a seat off to the side of the sanctuary.
And where was council member and mayoral candidate Adrian M. Fenty (D-Ward 4)? Lingering in the back of the room, out of sight to most sitting in the audience. "I didn't want to interrupt his speech," Fenty explained today. The usually ubiquitous Fenty was flying so low under the radar at the event that his campaign staff called me after the event to make sure he got a check mark on the attendance roll.
Council member David A. Catania (I-At-Large), who Barry called "his best friend on the city council" took a prominent seat in the front row, too. Behind him was Barry's predecessor in the Ward 8 seat, Sandy Allen, whom Barry called "a dear friend."
Barry's rambling speech highlighted many of the characteristics that make him such a compelling and puzzling political force in this town. At one point when he was talking about the need to employ ex-offenders, a distinctive chime blurted in the microphone. Barry reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his cell phone. "Some constituent calling me," he remarked with a laugh. "They call all hours of the night."

Mostly Barry employed a time-tested device of talking about how he and his ward have been knocked down and beat up but will in the end triumph. That was even evident during his discussion of the new baseball stadium lease, which Barry has repeatedly compared to Jesse James and the great train robbery. He called it a "bad deal" and an "awful lease" but then moments later proclaimed "we came out on top."
He also bragged about economic development in the ward, including new housing starts, the groundbreaking at Camp Simms, and his efforts to bring Metro headquarters across the river. He also proposed setting up a hotline, 1-800-snitch. "I know that's a bad word here in Ward 8 but somebody's got to do it," said Barry.
He characterized his relationship with the citizens of D.C. as a "love-in." He spoke of his "personal challenges" and said that during "all my personal difficulties I'm here to report to you I'm not neglecting my work." He said that even though the media makes "a joke out of my recovery" from substance abuse and "made you believe I'm dyin' on the vine," his memory is sharp and he feels good.
"I look good, too," he said with a smile.

Who cares?

It's no surprise Catania is Barry's best friend on the Council...He's just as corrupt as the former mayor. Unfortunately, his connections to Abramoff and Wade (of Duke-stir fame) aren't getting any press because Councilmembers without scandalous criminal histories don't get significant attention. Catania received money and did favors for both disreputable men, including securing meetings with high-level officials and valet parking for a restaurant on Penna Ave.

Is this blog supposed to be a reporting of the facts or an opinion/commentary? The statement "By showing up, a candidate gives credibility and visibility to an elected official who has brought shame to the nation's capital with his repeated run-ins with law enforcement authorities." seems to smack of impartial reporting and by placing it in the beginning of the piece prejudices the reading of all the other facts later reported in web log entry. Mr. Barry is beholden to his constituents, who like many others, knew of his problems with substance abuse, and still chose to elect him. By constantly assailing Mr. Barry, the Post continues to patronize Ward 8 as if there were not adults and not fully informed. The Post should take the challenge to treat all of D.C. citizens as adults and respect the will for democracy in all Wards of the city.

Marion Barry is not taken seriously be nmany people for many reasons. Although, living on in mythical proportions in the hearts of many native Washingtonians, Ward 8 is what it is, large in part due to his constant rhetoric of 'the man' beating him down. Its not about the rap its about the map. I teach for the Higher Achievement Program in Ward 7 and have been doing so for two years now, the schools will continue to fall apart and having faucets that do not work and toilets that do not flush as long as fools like Marion Barry is elected. Adrian Fenty is a lot of hype. Linda Cropp knows what is going on and although seemingly "out of touch" she should not be underestimated. She has spoken with members of the Young Heroes program here in DC and if elected knows how to apporach the problems that face DC in a professional manner as oppose to the common buffonery of Barry. It is sad and satirical in itself. Barry has done nothing but further fail the youth of the city with the exception of providing us with a 5.15 an hour jobs to sweep the streets. Which is where he belongs doing his drugs and drink and fast women.

Marion Barry...last of the Civil Rights Figther.
The first d.c. City Council of Civil Rights fighters...David Clarke,John.Wilson,Frank Smith. The Blacks in the City were protected from Gentrification project...and the Black Middle Class prospered.
This next generation of City Council Members were all in support for the White Elite, developers, Pepco, WASA to steal money from D.C. residents and allow the Federal Government to go without paying it's fair share of this "Nations Capital" up-keep.
Barry did not force the shortfalls of the Federal Gov't on the people of this city...by raising sales taxes, installing red light cameras, increasing property assessment every year [from every 3 yrs.], increase DMV fees, increase staffing of meter ticket maids - allowed unskilled, released felons to take over the streets which resulted in D.C. residents fearing and hating low income Black folks or decent folks who live in Ward 7 & 8.
But that heartless Mayor Williams and this Wicked City Council has turned their backs on the city residents and have been over spending without a blink of their eye.
Mayor Williams, this Wicked City Council forced our children to pay to use public swimming pools. I won this issue against the Director of Parks & Recreation. The Mayor suddenly rescinded the $2.00 fee until September 06.
Our children never should be taxed...our taxed money will continue to allow a child to have a decent, stress free, fun learning and loving up bringing in this Nations Capital.
This wicked City Council, CFO Ghandi, Mayor Williams and even the WASHINGTON POST has failed this city, lied, covered-up the truth and left D.C.residents with the BIGGEST DEBT THAT THIS CITY WILL EVERY WITNESS. Williams and this City Council has out done the "BOSS".
Jack Evans and the Council has declared "excess tax" will fund the $1 billion School improvement Project; NEXT Evans and the council declared; "excess tax" will pay for MLB stadium cost over runs...and now this is how D.C. RESIDENTS GOT THE SHAFT...
Wash. Post 3/15/06 Bussiness Sec.
MAYOR WILLIAMS & THIS WICKED CITY COUNCIL HAS "ILLEGALLY TAXED" MANY BUSINESSES WHOSE OWNERS LIVE IN THE SUBURBS...well so much for the "excess tax" P0NZI SCHEME.
I am nobody's fool...I will fight for you but you have to help also..... or face the largest tax increase since the rise in gasoline and cigarettes prices.
D.C. RESIDENTS STOP THIS MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL NOW... FROM THIS IRRESPONSIBLE SPENDING AND LYING AND STEALING FROM YOU AND ME. Calvin Gurly-Takoma.

Put me down as in agreement with Ward 1. Ward 4's comments re: Fenty amount to crass personal attacks. I have family members from both Europe and Africa, and Ward 4's rant is offensive. Our city needs to look forward, to the best in all of us, and not to those who use race and sexuality to divide us.

Don't bother. The only time the Post enforces it's own posting policies is if you insult the Post or any Post staff, like "Lovey" Howell.
Otherwise they could care.

Comments posted several weeks ago about Sam Brooks were equally outrageous. The Post seems entirely uninterested in any standards of decency here...

But Brady isn't a hypocrite at all. Nope. No sirree!
Just because he used less offensive comments to rationalize white-washing Howell's incompetent job as Ombudsman doesn't make him one at all. Nor an opportunist.

I am dissapointed in the Washington Post and their reporting. How they can deliberately mislead the citizens of Washington by promoting a young candidate that is not ready to lead this city. How they continously put him in the lime lite. It is like the washington post has only one candidate that they support. Heaven help us if Adrian Fenty get's in as Mayor. We can look froward to total distruction. The post nows that he has no experience to run a city and that if it was not for one person on his staff that the ward 4 people would not be taken care of. The one person on his staff make Fenty shine and Fenty takes the credit. Fenty is a lair and prejudice he even went as far to try and break the law to give illegal aliens the right to vote the black not 3 months earlier had been denied the right to vote in Florida. Post why don't you start reporting fairly and objectively because the citizens need to know the truth and not the truth as you have been reporting. Their are more candidate that have more experience and could lead this city beside Fenty. Like that move you made When Ms. Cropp financial report was more than Adrian Fenty and you put it in the Saturday papers because of the fact that people wait to get the Sunday's papers. And low and behold you had and article written on Fenty. But when you reported that Fenty had more money than Cropp you put it on a day that evryone reads the papers. You are now playing on the intelligence of the citizens of the District of Columbia. STOP IT!!!!!!!!

Ward 4, we write our money stories on the day the candidates file their reports with the d.c. office of campaign finance. the first reporting deadline (when fenty had more than cropp) was jan. 31, a tuesday. so the story appeared the next day, on wednesday. the second reporting deadline (when cropp had more than fenty) was march 10, a friday. so the story appeared on saturday.

Tell me what you think Adrian went to the Ward 8 address and seat in the back of the room. If excuse was that he did not want to interrupt the speech. What lame excuse. Truth is that Adrian does not feel comfortable around lower class blacks or blacks that he can't relate to or blacks that he know. This is a fact. Adrian is very arrogant and he can not relate to anyone that is less fortunate than himself. This is the real reason he was in the back. If he was in Ward 4 up off 16th street of Ward 1 or 3 I will bet you a dime to a donut that he would not have been in the back of the room and he would have worked the crowd. Adrian didn't even shake any of the ward person hand. Now can you run a city with that type of attitude. I think not . Once again he showed that his character leaves a lot to be desired.

Elissa,
Put a check mark next to At-Large Council candidate A. Scott Bolden, www.bolden2006.com, he was in attendance, too.
