Street Fight: D.C. Style

I watched the documentary Street Fight the other day -- the pull-no-punches look at the 2002 Newark mayoral campaign between entrenched Sharpe James and upstart Corey Booker. I had read a good review of the movie in the New Yorker and had put it on my NetFlix list, but had been waiting impatiently for it to come out on DVD.

I finally got my hands on a copy-- but not from NetFlix, rather from the Adrian Fenty campaign. Apparently, it's become a cult favorite among the staff, who see a lot of similarities between their boss and Booker: same shaved head, same good looks, same youthful demeanor, same energetic/door-knocking style, and so on... Fenty's staff happily tells of the time Booker came to D.C. and was mistaken for Fenty. (Below compare Booker left and Fenty right.)

If you haven't seen Street Fight but are thirsting for some bare-knuckles campaigning that we're not yet seeing between the five candidates in D.C., check out this movie. (And look for a cameo from the Post's own Nikita Stewart, who was then working for the Newark Star Ledger. She appears for a few seconds, hounding James for a quote.) Watching this movie, I could only dream for some stories as juicy as these.

Spoiler Alert Here (so stop reading if you don't want to know what happens)...

Fenty's staff surely will hope that he won't suffer the same fate as Booker in 2002, but then again, Booker has run again this year with far better results.

Good subject. Perhaps we can have a blog posting on all of the candidates for all of the races that tells us if they will give up their current jobs to serve full time? With so many of the candidates sounding like each other on so many issues, this may be something we can use to tell them apart.

What does Robert Gordon's job status have to do with this topic?

can't any of these Ward 3 candidates learn how to read and stay on-topic for a blog and corresponding comments?

Posted by: A Questioner | May 25, 2006 04:11 PM

Why is it that certain candidates in Ward 3 see this blog as a means for posting campaign ads? And I haven't got a clue what the heck this Post reporter is doing posting up a personal DVD review with only the slightest relevance to the mayoral race in DC, except that both the DVD and the mayoral race involve bald black men. Next thing you know, we'll get a personal DVD review of "What's Happening?" with comparisons by another sloppy Post reporter between Shirley from that TV show and Linda Cropp. At least we didn't have to wait a month for another entry in the blog from the Almighty Post.

Mike,

Welcome to the world of Rees watchers, a club of internet consumers who are fascinated with this sick man's travels and travails through the internet.

We have been aghast in fascination as the Rees-bot is able to spam countless listservers and blogs with his libel, hate and otherwise dis-jointed thought.

Ding ding ding!

I detected three (possibly four) of the Eight Obvious Ways To Detect A Rees Alias Posting.

Posted by: Go. Away. Rees. | May 25, 2006 09:47 PM

The Eight Ways are really really obvious, but I'm not sharing them. Why? Because you're Rees. There's no way I'm telling you how everyone keeps figuring out which posts are yours. Shhh. Nobody tell him!

Posted by: ReesWatcher | May 25, 2006 10:19 PM

Judging from Rees' comments so far, it looks like the article in today's Washington Times and the new blog on DCist have upset him. Rees has an aversion to the truth.

Hey "Safe Negro". Contriving some radical right-wing online persona doesn't throw us off the track. We still know it's you.

Pathetic.

This is too funny. Mr. Rees, for a bagillionth time, the mans name is ALEC EVANS. Anyone who wants proof that this is all the same person can Google Alex Evans and Fenty and see all of the hits that yield this same common mistake on the part of the Ward 3 candidate (in his own name and in too many alaises to count).

Posted by: Rees Watcher | May 26, 2006 06:50 AM

for the record, his name is alexander, and he goes by alec, or alex. but what the hell does he have to do with any of this drivel?

Posted by: actually | May 26, 2006 08:55 AM

He goes by Alec and only Alec. He has never gone by Alex. This is a mistake that Rees and his aliases make on a routine basis. Rees has been corrected a number of times (Google it).

Posted by: actually you are wrong | May 26, 2006 10:00 AM

Fenty is NOT Corey Booker, not even close...Corey Booker has degrees from Stanford, Yale and Oxford (as a Rhodes Scholar), is considered EXTREMELY intelligent and has a national reputation. And who is he comparing to Sharpe James? Maybe if he were running against Marion Barry... Street Fight?? In his dreams.

Posted by: Yeah, but... | May 26, 2006 10:47 AM

Rees says, "I think this whole blogging concept is for misfits who do not have a life and just sit around all day long thinking of some dumb stuff to say. Well, I think what has been posted so far supports my contenion."

Ouch. I guess Rees is really stung by DCist, DCeiver, Squidpants and others. The blogs rock! (For anyone who's missed that stuff: http://dceiver.blogspot.com/2005/11/ward-3-more-like-psycho-ward-jonathan.html

Posted by: | May 26, 2006 01:23 PM

I guess the above is more wasted bytes, as the Washington Post will soon delete the same crap from Rees that has already been deleted.

Posted by: William Jason | May 26, 2006 01:39 PM

Number one according to who? All the latest polling indicates others with a lot of support. As of now, Rees is showing up with less than 1% of votes...in other words, non-existant.

Posted by: A Questioner | May 26, 2006 02:52 PM

yeah, alex, definitely alex, yeah...

As I am travelling to make people understand the risk of playing politic w/ the life of the best mind just because he is not a sport star, by the way he does not have a political support.
