Dogfighting and Michael Vick
Few stories have generated as many comments as the Michael Vick dogfighting issue. A column by Sally Jenkins condemning Vick and an article by Paul Duggan examining dog-fighting culture find some but not all who comment appalled. While many readers decry the situation, a number find it to be much less of a problem or no problem at all. An interesting conversation indeed.
First, the comments about the Jenkins column.
jbiehl, in what would be good summary of the reader conversation, writes, "As much as I condemn Vick and these heinous acts... there is something important that isn't understood in the mainstream media and all those who pass judgment. Throughout the country... dogs are often bred to be vicious. There is widespread dog abuse and the point here is that all cultures don't view dogs the same way..." Duggan's article illustrates that point.
Luigi1 said, "Great article, Sally! You hit the nail on the head in regards to public outrage over the crimes of the monster Vick. This guy is revolting to most of us and it's simply inconceivable that he will ever again be allowed on a football field."
But latysha_hill said, "This is the worst article Ms. Sally. I'm still in disbelief that all this crap is over dogs! I do not value dogs nor animals in general as people nor do I care for them. I can't believe this man is going to prison over dogs."
howjensen said, "As owner and caretaker of 4 wonderful old mutts rescued from death row, I applaud Sally's shredding of Vick. Dogs possess the genuine capacity to bond with humans, flawed a species as we are. Their unconditional loyalty and joy is a welcome breath of fresh air every day. Justice served."
sweetaka1 said, "This is no different then the way slaves were treated and thousands got away with it and never paid a debt to society so I feel no remorse for those dogs."
jlk1 wrote, "There are facts and then there is the truth. Ms. Jenkins found both. As a society, we have moved past this kind of cruelty just as we no longer go to public executions with picnic baskets..."
Now the comments from the Duggan article.
maddymappo wrote, "The only good that has come out of this case is that this article about the brutal world of dog fights got to be written and on the front page of the WP. This article much more informative than Monday's soppy no questions asked article about the suffering Vick has caused his parents and family and how they insist Vick was a good guy under the influence of friends."
KarenLS said, "Not only is the whole process disgusting but how they deal with the animals at the end is inhumane... If this is what these people can do to dogs, one can only imagine what they do to wives and children."
dutchess2 wrote that "I think we need to stop and take a deep breath here....As bad and as illegal as dog fighting is... half the population in the US is wondering why the NFL thinks its worse than when one of their superstars beats his wife...they keep their jobs, get all sorts of sympathy, and keep on showing up for the games...
sick"
capitalist1 said, "It's amazing that so many of you who are posting comments are still so focussed on Vick. The article made it clear that Dogfighting is WIDESPREAD. It did not start with Michael Vick and will not end with Michael Vick... I wonder how many of you eat meat."

Arnold Schwarzenegger has suspended all commercial and sport fishing in areas affected by last week's San Francisco Bay oil spill. The decision likely will make the biggest dent in the highly anticipated commercial season for Dungeness crab, which was scheduled to start in ocean waters outside the bay Thursday but has now been postponed for at least 2 1/2 weeks amid health concerns. "It will set us back quite a bit," said Art Romine, 38, a crabber who planned to return home to Newport, Ore., after hearing about the suspension Tuesday. "We can't be bringing in crabs that are possibly toxic," he said. "That wouldn't be good for the market at all. People don't want to buy toxic food." Some local fishermen were hired by the Port of San Francisco to help with the oil cleanup effort for $3,000 a day, less than a quarter of what they could make catching crabs. "They know the waters better than anyone," port...

According to Ian Riley, CTO of Homeland Integrated Security Systems, "This is the culmination of over two years of research, design and development. Our entire team has put their all into this project and it is a fantastic feeling to bring this to completion." "With the final certifications on the GSM version of the Cyber Tracker, we will now move our focus to sales and production," said Fred Wicks CEO and President of Homeland Integrated Security Systems. Ya okay. If we can`t report more important issues on the news than the Vick case we`re all out to lunch. Of course it`s horrible that he was a part of this operation but come on this stuff is going on all the time and nothing is done. He`s famous and the media made a famous story out of it and now it`s inundating the news. To be honest I`ve never felt overly comfortable around PitBulls anyway. Get rid of them. They are strictly image dogs. There are far more problems in this world that we should be sorting out but heh they don`t have any HollyWood appeal. So why bother? community service, a fine or donation, and probation and let the guy play again.

I am a big supporter of the ethical treatment of animals but think that we are fighting the wrong battles. What about the ethical treatment of people?
We waste too much of our energy on small things while the more important issues pass by us. What about the economy, health care for all, war, immigration, education, environment?
While the world is trying to convict a football player of dogfighting our kids are not receiving quality education, our families are eroding, we can no longer afford basic necessities, our country is being flooded by immigrants in search of better opportunities (that we don't even have), we can not get affordable quality healthcare, and we are fighting a war and our soldiers are dying without an end in sight.
I know Vick's actions were not responsible or ethical but we are condemning him when you have people like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Nicole Richie driving cars under the influence and endangering the lives of others while nothing is being done.
I think we need to value human life as much as we value the lives of animals and our society will be better.

Faced with that kind of punishment, you'd see this activity stop pretty quick!

King Solomon would have settled this quite simply. Put Vick in a pen with his own dogs, and let them exact justice!
