Kori Calling
Gosh I wish we'd had YouTube when I was in high school. I would love to have been able to do what 17-year-old Devraj "Dave" S. Kori did when he was blasted by the spouse of a Fairfax County school administrator for leaving a message on their listed home telephone asking why a snow day hadn't been declared. She called back and left an angry message on Kori's cell and it found its way to YouTube.
We have the economy tanking, presidential candidates fighting, a promising young movie star dying, Dan Snyder on another mysterious hunt for a Redskins coach, and all these stories have attracted many comments, some of them highly nuanced. But Our Readers Who Comment are very clear about Kori's story: they either think he was horrible or the administrator's spouse was horrible. I'm with the kid, but of course a recording of whatever message he left has not been made available so perhaps I would have a different view if it were.
Who do you think was right? Feel free to comment below.
This story was occasioned by a snowstorm, the very suggestion of which brings out the worst in Washington. So the RWC weigh in on that, on the perils (or advantages) of today's technology, on the righteousness or idiocy of school administrators generally, on the permissive age that gives us spoiled kids who will not be able to get a job because their high-school transactions will show up on Google, and whether people should have listed phone numbers.
We'll start with goodoldboy1, who was first out of the gate on this one, and who wrote, "This kid won't go far in the real world. Try calling up the CEO/CFO of your company and ask them why they didn't cancel work that day... it seems its just the ramblings of a self centered youth just trying to tell the world that he'd be better off at home playing his new video game..."
And reporter1, one of our regulars who comments on many things, fired back almost immediately, "You can't find a bigger social/professional class of twits than school administrators. But... please understand that today's cyber-world is now an arena for intemperate remarks and foolish behavior--even for supposed adults."
To which john65001 added, "I second that, and would add bitter, angry, and arrogant. This kid's going to leave the FCPS [Fairfax County Public School] system behind and never look back, while these losers are where they will be 20 years from now."
JimDandy1 said, "In Upstate New York we get 9" of snow while we are at school without incident. Nobody gets hurt. Urging phone harrassment is rude and a disregard for implied privacy rights in the Constitution."
Tirade1 wrote, "The student exercised poor judgement. The wife's response was far more atrocious--an adult should know better."
giantpacificoctopus said that "If you're a public official, and don't want calls from the public (which include students), then why have your phone number listed?..."
catmink wrote, "A 3.977 GPA and 0.000 common sense."
readerny said, "I don't agree with the tirade by the woman who answered the call, BUT as an employer of young adults, I can say that there are some (not all) who are overempowered and think that they know the whole story, or more than you do, and should be running the show themselves..."
But Nicester wrote, "Overempowered kid" and "self-centered youth" - OK, that's one perspective. Sounds a bit like "whippersnapper" or whatever the Greatest Generation was calling the Baby Boomers when they were dropping acid and rolling in the mud at Woodstock..."
Meredith2 warned, "Well, look at the bright side. In a a couple of years, dear little Mr. Kori will be applying for all of the jobs he thinks he'll be entitled to. And after googling his name, employers will be throwing his resume in the trash can. Technology bytes both ways kid."
DaysofBrokenArrows said, "Hehe. Tis kid gives me hope for the future. When we were in school, we were treated like garbage -- just as this kid was... Thanks to technology, arrogant school administrators no longer can get away with this. Great job!"
dane1 wrote, "When I was 17, other stupid, self-involved, 17-yr-olds made my life miserable. And damned if they're not STILL doing it."
fluffmongrel asked, "... You think she left an appropriate message on this kid's cell phone? Of course, we don't get the privilege of hearing his call. Maybe he was rude. But the proper response would have been to forget about it... She treated this kid worse than I treat unwanted calls from solicitors..."
kellybcool wrote, "Neither my spouse nor I would dare to take it upon ourselves to answer a work-related message left for the other on our ansering machine. It is even more inappropriate where the other spouse holds a position of public trust..."
abc1 said, "... The wife should be embarrassed. She should also apologize to the young man."
And we'll close with hartman_john, whose suggestion on how to handle this in the first place is the least likely to happen of any I read today. He wrote, "Children under 18 should not have access to any technology that allows them to do stupid stunts like the one outlined in this article. Kori's parents...ought to... confiscate this stupid kid's phone, computer and any other electronic devices he has..."
All comments on Kori's call are here.

The internet is modern proof of the pen being mightier than the sword. From Mrs. T's comments, it sounds like Mr. Kori was probably about as congenial to listen to as Mrs. T's rant. To borrow another old saying, two wrongs don't make a right. Mr. Kori is no hero in my books and not someone I'd want working for me - if he would even come to work on a day it snows, and as for Mrs. T., well, an anger management course might be a wise choice - oh, and an unlisted phone number.

Let it go people. What this kid did was boneheaded but he is just a kid and I'm sure he has learnt his lesson as did the lady.
I've seen several mentions of this kids address, phone number and the names of his parents and siblings. Why stop at that? What next? Post photographs of his whole family? Throw them in prison? Ostracize them from society?
The people who disproportionally complain about this kid are the ones who have lost their moral compass and have sacrificed their judgement and perspective for draconian hatred. Let it go people. Let it go.

Having had Dave in a class, I can assure you he is going very far in life. He has always been a very polite young man who treats his teachers and other faculty members with the utmost respect. He is a great kid and genuinely cares about the well-being of his peers and his community.

I as a person who was a high school senior last year was very offended by her comments. To refer to children as snot nosed brats is just plain rude. Since when did adults have so many problems in their personal lives that they must take it out on others. Also, since when is questioning authority bad. We have seen people with power time and time again abuse it, it is something we need as a society to constantly monitor. I think it is RIDICULOUS that a child is being yelled at for asking a simple question. I hope that woman gets medication

and it at Lake Braddock if you miss one school day you have so much make-up work to do. Its not worth missing school.

The kid absolutely had it coming. The little idiot deserved much more for calling them at home at who knows what ungodly hour. That's just rude and unnecessary. I understand she was upset, but she should not have left a message in these days of youtube. It will come back and bite you in the behind. I would've called his parents and disturbed their sleep and then had the kid suspended so that he could have all the days off his spoiled little heart desired. Some people are taking the kids side, but seriously why? He called their house to complain they weren't getting a day off because it was snowing? Boo f-n hoo. His parents should be mortified they raised such a moron. I also would've called the cops and filed a complaint for phone harassment. He's 17, almost a legal adult. The fact that he's 17 is what's really ridiculous. This is something an 8 year old would do. How dare that kid think he's in the right and try to make her look like the bad guy. Kids today think they deserve everything. I'd be so ashamed if he was my son.
Posted by: Jules | January 25, 2008 9:45 AM
The kid is a kid. He may do stupid things.
Mrs. Tisdadt is a grown woman. She should know better than to behave like that.

My post below seems like an attack on FCPS. That is so far from my intent, I hasten to balance my trivia by noting that US News & WR study recently named an FCPS high school the best (public) high school in America. Since their criteria measured the achievement of students, it follows the highest achieving students in America weree educated by FCPS.
Posted by: jhbyer | January 25, 2008 6:38 AM
Caroline wisely says, "And you do have to be careful these days; you never know when your image or voice will show up on the internet." Yes, and it seems especially we dare not mess with kids educated by FCPS. Remember "Macaca" who put his video on the 'net of then Senator George Allen (R-VA)? That FCPS alumi is said to be solely responsible for ending the GOP control of the US Senate. And if that seems heavy-handed, remember the VA Tech gunman, Cho? The FCPS alumni felt so very dissed he shot more dead at one time than any killer in US history. (Like Mrs. Tistadt, Cho complained bitterly of "snot-nosed brats" or something close to that). Lesser known angry young FCPS alumni, William Kennedy, just a few ago shot up an FC police station after he'd been given a traffic citation, killing two young officers, parents of small children, our first ever to die on duty. Very sad.

Kids today are so lazy and coddled. A little slush on the ground and he feels entitled to involve a school administrator's family by calling his home? Wimpy little punk. The wife's response is understandable; I'm sure she's had enough of such brats. Even though I'd imagine her husband is not at all pleased with the attention. And you do have to be careful these days; you never know when you image or voice will show up on the internet.

FORMER FCPS STUDENT, thanks for highly relevant details missed by the news coverage. As a 22 yr resident and parent of a former FCPS (K -12) student who went to elementary school near Lake Braddock High (we lived on Lake Braddock) I can vouch for the truth of what you wrote about the dangers. For readers who don't get it, Fairfax County is built on the fall-line between the Piedmont Upland and the Atlantic Coastal Plain, so it's hilly and wooded, twists and turns, down east and up west. At least two drivers in the last few years went off roads into ravines and weren't found for a week. Countless others lost less than a week aren't news. Two years ago, when it snowed, a student driving to school hit an ice patch and was killed. As a result, last year it seems every snow flake occasioned schools closing, which lengthened the school year and caused much criticism, no doubt forcing Mr. Tistadt to be up at 4:00 am, as his wife complained, screaming into David's voice mail, as if it were all his fault.

-He is not underpaid at all!#$#@!#$%^& compared to teachers who are in their buildings before he reaches his office in the morning, hes also a public servant and his salary is paid for with tax payer money, so he should be answering anyone who calls him.

Funny how this incident is being spinned by a few people - it's claimed to be young vs old, democrats vs republicans.
In fact, all it is, is a bratty kid feeling entitled to destroy another human being because he felt dissed.
We dishonor the Bill of Rights when we claim the kid was exercising his First Amendment rights.
Parents are at fault, and the schools also: way too much emphasis on "self-esteem" - so, grades get inflated, and egos too.
I wouldn't have left the message that Candy left, but on second thought, it was just the words that the kid needed to hear.
Kudos to Candy! Educators are unsung heroes who endure constant unspeakable abuse because a lot of parents are unreasonable and are terrible role models to their kids.

Ever try to drive on Guinea Road with even an inch of icy slush? How about Olley Lane, or Lake Braddock Drive? Burke Road, maybe? No? Oh, you don't LIVE there, I see. Well, guess what. Dave Kori does. He was AT SCHOOL on his lunch break when he made the call. He was legitimately concerned about his and his fellow students' safety. He called Dean Tistadt's office number first, and was unable to reach him. Then he called the listed home number, and left what was, by all accounts, a polite request for information about the decision to keep school open that day, along with his contact information. Then he probably (though I am assuming here) went back to class. Up to this point, everything was civil - even the phone call to Dean Tistadt's home. (Most people I know, my husband and I included, get called at home for work-related issues. Just part of the 24/7 world we live in.) The ugliness started with Candy Tistadt's response, which begat an equally mean-spirited response from Dave Kori. I don't condone his posting of the message on the Internet. But if I were Kori's parents, the first thing I would do (after suspending Dave Kori's Internet and cell phone privileges for about a month, and firmly explaining to him that posting voicemails on the Internet is not acceptable conflict resolution) is call Candy Tistadt and demand an apology for her abusive tirade. She had no right to leave that vitriolic voicemail about an issue that was none of her concern. Dave Kori called at lunchtime, which in FCPS is roughly 11AM - 12:30PM, from my days there. This is hardly an indecent time to place a phone call to a residence. Furthermore, calling Dean Tistadt at home was NOT the first course of action. And no one has bothered to ask - where was Dean Tistadt when Dave Kori called his office? Or did HE decide to skip work because of the weather?
I've lived in Northern Virginia for over 30 years. A few inches of snow would not be a big deal, but we rarely get "just snow". It's almost always snow, followed by sleet and freezing rain, which creates the dreaded "black ice" conditions that make driving around here so treacherous. For the record, I was at work all day during the snow event, and when I left work at 5pm, I had to walk very gingerly to my car because of the slick sidewalks outside my office building. It's not the snow in this area, it's the ICE that's the problem. Dave Kori was right to question Tistadt's decision. It's what he did after Candy Tistadt unleashed her vitriol that was wrong.

Why is everyone saying the adult should know better and just ignore it?? Is that how we teach "kids" their behavior is unacceptable - by ignoring it?? First of all, this guy isnt a "kid" - he is 17 who feels entitled. His parents should have made him replace his web page w/an apology to the COO and his wife. Why is the wife not allowed to return a phone call to HER HOME??? He has a lot to learn about what is acceptable in the work place. Who calls their boss at home to question their decisions?? A SNOT NOSED BRAT - who would soon be unemployed if he worked for our company.

This is quite the comment thread.
We have "Madeleine in FL" telling "Kori and the rest of X generation" to "get some education," right after misspelling the name of the school administrator's wife and incorrectly (on two grounds) stating that her "right to privacy are first Amendment rights."
There is SUSAN CERIMELE, who feels a need to SHOUT AT US with all ALL-CAPS MESSAGE.
Bob from MoCo adds the insight that the kid's supporters are Democrats, while the wife's supporters are Republicans.
Where is H.L. Mencken when we need him to tell us that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people?
Posted by: Laughing At This | January 24, 2008 12:30 PM
I lived in Detroit for 10 years and I am used to driving in snow. In Virginia, if there is even a slight chance of snow, people are already lining up in the grocery stores to stock up on milk and bread. Kids expect the schools to be closed when there is snow. Go figure!
If Kori's intent was to better understand the rationale behind the decision, that is acceptable. BUT, regardless of the content of the message that Kori left, the manner which Mrs. Tisdadt chose to respond was very inappropriate.
As for posting the message, she left the message -- it is fair game.
Posted by: rotoedger | January 24, 2008 11:10 AM
HILARIOUS! First off, I do not approve of the boy calling the home of the administrator but it was probably bad judgement. Didn't we all feel entitled at 17 years of age? What I think is so darn funny is that this woman thought for even a spit second that she deserves privacy from what she did? What expectation of privacy could she possibly have had leaving a message on a recorder? I'm 35 so not completely in touch with the latest technology but I have learned, the hard way, never to leave "it" on voice mail, in a text message or on email. I don't think she should have had to take a call from this child but she had NO business calling back (the message wasn't for her but for her husband!) and she deserves the embarrassment she got from UTube...she should have known better. Maybe she needs to go back to school and learn about this thing they call the INTERNET!
Posted by: Mom of two | January 24, 2008 10:16 AM
1) for all of you saying dave isn't a bright student and has an "inflated" GPA, suck it up. He's brilliant, and I assure, you, wayyyy brighter than your child.
2) If you haven't realized it by now because you're all ignorant FOOLS, we don't care about the snow and not getting out of school. That's not the issue. The issue is how this woman responded to a polite phone call. No wonder all the incompetent candidates are left for the presidential nomination-- you're the idiots voting.
Posted by: LB Student | January 24, 2008 3:17 AM
There is no question that the administrator's wife got caught at a bad momenta and, thanks to technology, it became national news.
Having said that, I must assert that the fault lies with the kid. It is entirely inappropriate to call the home of an administrator under any circumstances. Not even the worst kid in my class would have dreamed of doing it when I was in school. The wife's message was shrill, but I would ask if people listened to what she was saying. This guy got up before the crack of dawn and drove in and was working his ass off trying to figure out what to do. If we say it's okay for this kid to bypass all chains of command and call the chief administrator at home, we must give that benefit to all kids (and janitors, etc.). And then we have chaos.
The scary thing for me is that so many people feel the kid's actions were appropriate. Young people have a lot more exposure today than they did in my day, they generally have more privilege, and many are very smart. But if you haven't lived life and experienced the difficulties it brings, you know bupkis. Squat. Zero. You know zilch, Kori. Zilch.
There was a day when people understood this.

A teenager is allowed to experience a moment of embarrassment and indiscretion--that's how we learn. An adult (particularly one who deals with children on a professional basis and is married to a public official), on the other hand, needs to know how to behave. This woman's reaction is offensive. I'm glad she's gotten some notoriety. Who does she think she is, talking like that to a person she doesn't even know?! Spouses of professionals get crazy calls all the time (I'm a doc, and my husband is a doc, and I've answered several of his calls from patients who call at dinnertime or late at night). Spouses have no business answering calls (or returning calls) in this manner. I would never dream of talking to another person in the rude manner of Ms. Candy. I seriously wonder about her professional capacity and mental balance.

Want to stay out of school because of snow? Don't go! Parents, if you or your child gets hurt on the way to or back from school, don't complain.
What is this lady teaching her school kids? How to be rude and out of control? There is a delete button on your answering machine - learn how to use it.
Kid - you crossed the line calling someone at home invading their privacy.

Go Ms. Tisdat!!!
Slow News day and Get a Grip, People. The FCPS has been consistently rated by essentially all reviewers as one of the highest rated public school systems for all grades K-12 in the entire USA for more than two decades on virtually all measures, academic and otherwise and people like Mr. Tisdat make it so.
Yes, FCPS is a large system and NOVA weather can be capricious, but making tough calls are what administrators are PAID for and yes, it's worth $152K a year. I wouldn't want that job myself - the weather in Lake Braddock can be very different than the weather in Fairfax Station or Clifton due to traffic and topography but closing schools system-wide for an area that large is something that should not be considered lightly. When I was a kid in Lake Braddock ('70s) we needed at least 4 inches before they'd even consider closing school.
However, today at 38 years old, I'd sure like to get out of work for 3 inches of snow!!! We don't get snow where I live now, we get ICE. It's warmer in Greensboro & Charlotte, NC but try driving to work or going to school on ICE. That is a whole 'nother thing. I'll take 6 inches of snow over ½ inch of ICE any time.
Shut up Kori, THERE IS A REASON why experience COUNTS and respect for your elders is not the first of them.

WOW! Couple of things strike me as VERY STRANGE:
Clearly the first one is how upset some of you are over this. Particularly how mad some of you are at the kid (um, he's 17). I'm in my mid 30's and I don't have amnesia, so that means I remember all the crazy pranks I pulled when I was his age, and I'm not so sure his was even a prank. Regardless, please, I would like for any single one of you who posted a scathing (and most disturbingly, sometimes threatening) message about that kid, I hereby challenge you to publicly state that you never pulled a stunt when you were young... of any kind. Please. Go right ahead, I haven't called anyone a liar all day so might as well start with you. Can't believe how emotionally unstable some of you are (mostly Candy).
Second - who is the kid and who is the adult? Name calling? Broad sweeping insults aimed at the kids for whom her husband is supposed to be serving as an educational administrator and ROLE MODEL?? Are you #($& SERIOUS?? Good Lord, how our standards have fallen! Don't we preach to our kids about counting to ten, controlling our anger, acting like adults? What a great example. Sorry, lady, but you screwed up royally in the digital age and sometimes you pay for that. Just ask Alec Baldwin. ;)
Third - the main assumption people are making is that the kid did this as a prank or with the intent of making the Tistadts violently angry. Uh, hello? He left his real name and his real number on the message, apparently hoping someone would call him back with some info. Boy did they. Question: How many of you ever crank called someone and left your contact information? Ever egg a house and leave a note on the door saying it was in fact you, little Billy Valentine, just down the street at 14 Piney Blvd who did the dastardly deed?
Are we to believe that he made that call and left his name and number hoping to get this kind of response so he could become an instant internet sensation? How would he have known Crazy Candy would get the message vs. her obviously more level-headed spouse for whom the vm was apparently intended? How did he know what frame of mind she would be in? Perhaps he knows them personally? Perhaps she's been a nut like this in public before and has a reputation (might not be a stretch)? If all of this is true and this was exactly how he planned it then one thing is for sure - THIS KID IS SMART!!! Talk about impressive! Imagine! Such accurate psychological profiling, masterful planning and execution! Makes me ashamed of myself that all my friends and I could ever think of were such comparatively pedestrian antics like leaving bags of burning poop on the door mat and ringing the bell. Sad for us.
Personally, I seriously doubt this was his master plan (as I'm sure do you) but if it was then my hat is definitely off to you, kid. This may well be the brightest generation yet, though, Dave Kori, you should probably take that intelligence of yours and try to do something a bit more constructive with it.
Peace,
Jay
Oh, and one more thing... to the anonymous person who posted this kids contact information... his physical address even... what were you hoping for? Someone to do violence or vandalism on him or his family? I hope this wasn't you, Crazy Candy, but whoever it was, it will come back to you. Karma.

I am 24 and did not miss Kori's generation. In fact, you can say that my generation bridges the gap between the tech- savvy and the the book-readers. So, think of my comment as neutral in nature because I am young enough to remember but old enough to regret.
To save everyone the time, here it is in bullet style:
*Kori IS a brat since he retaliated by airing dirty laundry in public as a spoiled brat throws a tantrum in Toys"R"Us.
*Candy may have said that her husband deals with "brats", however, she never said he "only" deals with brats. Therefore, she was not generalizing because, in truth, her husband does deal with brats.
*Kori IS not very experienced in the adult world. Let us consider his first dip a sink, rather than a swim. So much for the debate guru.
*Candy, is that your real name? Your a little cinnamon firecracker and I can tell that you really care for your husband. It must hurt to know that your husband is not backing you up after you verbally gave that "little brat" a lickin' for your hubby.
*Kori, please stay away from debate. I know too many folk who have difficulties with understanding the difference between academic debate and real world conflict. Debate is purely for the win (right vs wrong) while real world conflict is about compromise. You might have had a fair chance at winning your snow day by collecting 10% of the PARENT'S signatures and petitioning. Instead, you tried to take on the big cheese alone. Who does that? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
*Candy NEEDS a vice.
Good battling to all!

well, though I think that Kori seems to have a very adult head on his shoulders; (having the guts to call, being mature enough to leave a level-headed message rather then a crank call)
but I do believe that he has a slightly immature view of the world; (giving out the home number of the offical was a little too much of a low blow)
with that said, if i were in his shoes, i probably would have done the same thing (posting the voicemail, just not the home number).
I listened to the voicemail the psycho babbling banchee left... my initial thoughts and feelings were complete astonishment.
first of all, PBB shouldn't have even responded to a voicemail that wasn't directed at her, but if she felt soooo compelled to call up this kid and put him in his place then it would have been acceptable for her to leave more of a non-chalant, matter-of-fact message "sorry I can not be of help to you in trying to contact my husband, as you can understand he is very busy today and will be working long hours this week to cope with the stress of the inclement weather, please understand that he is not dismissing you, and that he will try to get to your call as soon as he can. if you have any more questions it would be better if you try him at his office rather then his home phone, his office number is ***-***-****. thank you."
now, was that respectful response so hard? I don't think that it is the puny 3" of snow, or the gull of Kori to try to obtain a response towards his questions. but it is the disrespectful, irate, overreaction of a overprivleged spouse of an elected offical. would she cop that anger with an adult? why does she feel the need to become so hostile towards another? simply put, she overreacted, and is borderline certifiable. and the young man should gain a learning experience from this to not kindle the lit fire by publishing a home phone number to someone he disagrees with.
just my 5 cents

Although it was inappropriate for Mr. Kori to call the Tistadt resident to complain about something as minor as a snow day, Candy Tistadt's response was completely overboard.
It disturbs me that Mrs. Tistadt is an educator of elementary school children; I cannot help but wonder how the parents of her students feel, knowing she considers FCPS kids to be "snotty nosed brats". I know that if she taught my children, I would want her fired immediately or at the very least receive a public apology.
So bad judgment on the part of Mr. Kori, but even worse judgment from Mrs. Tistadt.

because it doesnt snow a lot in Virginia, 3 inches of snow accumulating very fast in Virginia is a big deal. there isnt the proper equipment such as plows, etc in high numbers.
btw kori = hero
you cant spell FASCIST OPPRESSION
without the letters: F C P S
which stands for Fairfax County Public Schools

I can't believe this has gotten so out of hand. It is really pathetic. If the student felt that it was not safe to return to school, then he should have stayed home and used it as an excuse. I don't see how this is such a dire emergency that it needs the attention of the Dean at home. And what about the Chain of command. Why didn't he ask the principal? One day away from school is not going to lower his GPA and it isn't like he could not have made up the work that he missed. Honestly, the student sent the events in motion. I can understand calling someone for a life threatening emergency, but three inches of snow where no issue really exists if the student decides to stay home seems very excessive. As well posting the phone number crossed the line. If he wanted to share the phone call- fine, posting the number is definately harassment. I feel sorry for this country when this generation runs things. Their sense of entitlement and cocky attitudes are only going to lead to this country falling to third world status. Enjoy your freedom and prosperity while it lasts in this country. In less than 10 years this generation will be responsible for us. I dread the thought. As for the person who would hire this person, I sure hope you don't need someone dependable. He might call you when it rains and ask why you did not shut down work.

$152,145 = Tistadt's Salary (as of 11/1/04)AND I just realized that his wife, Candy Tistadt is listed as a Fairfax County Public Schools employee working at Eagle View Elementary School, http://www.fcps.edu/eagleviewes/staffdirectory2.htm. WHY hasn't this fact been mentioned in the media??? This woman should not be allowed anywhere near children of any age. She has no common sense and no self control.
As a former public school teacher, whose compensation was less than 20% of Mr. Tistadt's, here are my thoughts...
First of all, please pause for a moment and answer this question:
Have you or your spouse / significant other EVER chosen to respond to a message that a client/boss left for the other party and then decided to leave a RECORDED irate tirade referring to the other party's client base in derogatory terms, e.g. "snotty-nosed little brats"?
This wasn't an impulsive *69 reaction to a 2 a.m. prank phone call. Mrs. Tistadt took the time to listen to the message. She got Mr. Kori's name and phone number. She then decided to call a student -- a minor, and when she reached a voice mail box, she made the decision to RECORD an abusive rant on an underage minor's voicemail. This is not the behavior of a rational adult - period!
If Mrs.Tistadt doesn't want to receive calls from her husband's clients a.k.a. the "snotty-nosed little brats" that are keeping him out late at night (???), then I highly recommend that she:
#1 Encourage her poor, tortured husband to resign from his position as a public official making in excess of $152,145. I feel confident that there are plenty of highly qualified individuals who, along with their family members, have enough commonsense a) not to respond to work related messages at home if that is too unbearable or b) to get an unlisted number.
#2 Seek Professional Help ASAP for rage / anger management, destructive / inappropriate behavior (lack of impulse control), apparent general misery / unhappiness, &/or whatever other issues she has. Since she is now a celebrity, she may want to follow the usual "out of control celebrity" process of issuing an apologetic statement explaining her psychotic breakdown and immediately entering rehab.
Seriously though, if you or your spouse make less than $150,000 per year & have ever received a call from a client/boss outside of the office and handled it without having a psychotic meltdown, then you should be taking young Mr. Kori's side, too.
The snow is a moot point. However, for those non-D.C. area people please know that it is not the amount of snow so much as the fact that even when it rains here; people completely forget how to drive, and the roads are truly dangerous. There were many valid concerns from rational adults as to the safety issues involved in having kids, parents, and buses on the roads given the weather we ended up with that day.
Young Mr. Kori took some (perhaps naive / misguided) initiative and determined the specific individual responsible for a decision that he disagreed with, which was Mr. Tistadt. Mr. Kori then attempted to contact Mr. Tistadt at his office and got no answer. Mr. Kori then chose to call the HIGHLY COMPENSATED public employee, Mr. Tistadt, at a published number, where Mr. Kori then left both his full name and his phone number. This was NOT a prank call, but a call made to a published number during acceptable calling hours. Mr. Kori left a message for Mr. Tistadt, not Mrs. Tistadt. Mrs. Tistadt chose to sieze her 15 minutes of fame.
If some adult had been stupid enough to leave me this message when I was 17, I would have spread it around through all means possible. Of course, I am old (38), and we didn't have voice mail, cell phones, or the internet.
Posted by: Leah | January 23, 2008 10:39 PM
The phone call was not a bad thing; the response was a little abusive.
Mrs. Tisdats right to privacy are first Amendment rights.
Maybe Kori and the rest of X generation need to get some education. Like go to school in the snow.
Posted by: MadeleineFL | January 23, 2008 10:33 PM
It's interesting to note that if the spouse had not made inappropriate comments, on a voicemail, that the situation would not be the spectacle it has become. Those who sympathize with the school official and his wife are not necessarily wrong, but stupid to modern society. Ignorance, by definition, signifies them not knowing the message could have been recorded, which is undoubtedly not the case. She acted inappropriately and the school officials spokesperson made an unjustifiable comment. School officials do not live in a bubble, they are subject to the same environment as everyone else. The current political debate reflects this reality, public officials are always in the spotlight.
Why does there seem to be this holier than thou attitude? Questioning authority made this country what it is, those who disagree and feel the student was out of line should seriously read their history books. Specifically focusing on countries that do not practice free speech.

I know Dave personally. I have played soccer with him for 2 years and still do. I don't think expected this to get out of hand like this, he's a good guy and everyone makes mistakes and in my opinion is that both parties made a mistake and lets just get on with it. I'm sure he learned a life long lesson and I wonder what he'll say at our game if he says anything. Then again, I am only a 17 year old brat who lives in Northern Virginia right? Shouldn't label everyone our age, we all make mistakes, I'm sure each one of us has made our fair share of mistakes we all regret. just my thoughts

My generation would never have made the phone call but my childrens would. It has nothing to do with the boy's up bringing...come on...everything has changed in society. When I was growing up the freedom of the press was never as free as it is today and that is the generation our children have been raised in. It has nothing to do with manners or respect. Dean Tisdat does not answer E-mails I can attest to that because I have children in the fcps and I have E-mailed him twice before in the past with no response. So I believe this boy when he says he has tried to contact Tisdat at his office with no response. If he is too BUSY to deal with the parents/students in the school system then he should have a secretary answer his E-mails. As for his wife she didn't get this call at the crack of dawn he called during his lunch hour and I can assure you it's not the first call they ever got. There phone number is listed. Her husband has already spoke and said the boys phone call "was reasonable." Her's was anything BUT reasonable. She deserves to be embarrassed and have it all over the internet. You don't talk to a 17 year old child that way or anyone else for that matter. She just got caught because of technology. I consider that call child abuse. I think the boyis quite smart and had every right to put his response from fcps to his question on the internet.
Posted by: new generation | January 23, 2008 10:18 PM
Too bad Kori isn't smart enough to check the internet or call the school himself to see if there is a snow day or not. Or, was he trying to be "cute" by calling the home of the administrator? Either way, totally inappropriate and borderline harrassment. Apparently, his parents didn't raise him right. They didn't raise him to be respectful. If it were my kid, he'd be grounded until he turned 30. In fact, my kids wouldn't dream of doing something that disrespectful. Kori screams of being spoiled and entitled, calling the home of an administrator...typical spoiled American kid who thinks he's a peer with an adult. Spare the rod, spoil the child, someone please break out the rod for Kori. Please.

Kori,
You are a whinner, and I hope to keep your name alive on the net for all future employers to google about you total lack of sound judgment and ZERO comon sense. If you don't like snow, why don't you move some place warm where your brain might work better.
Posted by: Jerk | January 23, 2008 10:07 PM
Kori is typical whinning millienal brat with no clue about the real world. If he worked for me and asked for a snowday, I'd fire his ass in a heartbeat! I say he can take his cellphone and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.
Posted by: Tisdale | January 23, 2008 10:03 PM
Ha - all this fuss about leaving a little heated message on some "poor kid's phone." Ah, you have to love America.
I say good for Candy. She put on her big girl panties and told it like it is. No sugar coating for the little 17 year old who cried into the answering machine like a beaten baby seal because it snowed just a widdle bit and he still had to go to school.
All you people out there saying public officials (and therefore their spouses too) should know better and be held to higher standards blah blah blah... reality check! We're talking a normal, underpaid, overworked educator here - not some elected politico.
Candy - relax, take a drink. Life goes on.
Kori - get back to your schoolwork and stop inappropriately bothering people about trivial crap.

I have to run to the store and buy all the milk, bread and water in sight because it's the end of the world...what would they do if it was a real disaster??? Talk to anyone from a colder climate and they'll tell you this whole thing is ultimate stupidity.

The kid was wrong to call the administrator's home. The administrator was wrong to return the call, and very dumb to go off on him the way she did. Both parties made mistakes, which people do.
But the fact that the kid spewed this onto the internet is disgusting. Vengeful, out-of-proportion overreaction. Just because "that's what kids do" these days doesn't make it right.
Ooh, young Mr. Kori, you powerful, testosterone-driven man, you. I guess you win!

Is "snotty nose brat" a catch phrase in education that I don't know about? The student was wrong, but I would think a superintendent of schools can handle himself with a student without his wife taking over. What if it was an angry parent?

After reading many of the posts it's a wonder why OUR country is in such disarray. "BobofMoCo" is one of the reason's that our country is split in two. As we are viewed so poorly among our peers around the world it's laughable. As a DEMOCRAT I find the the teenagers actions disgusting. And his parents should be equally embarrassed. The administrator's spouse may have been out of line but the kid had it coming. Kids today are raised to be disrespectful and full of themselves. They're coddled and given a sense of entitlement from the womb. Wake up PARENT's many of you are the reason for the ill's in our society.

We don't know what he said, but it must've been the last straw. I'd be just as upset if a student was calling THE HOUSE at the crack of dawn and my husband was AT WORK trying to figure out a solution. We don't know what he said, AND we don't know how many times he called...

Hey "Kristie Darley" sweetums, if you are to slow to understand the difference between a "Walmart employee" and a public official who is responsible for making choices that have to do with the safety of the public most importantly children, then you seem to be the one with the understanding gap here darling not this kid or his supporters. I dont give a fart about what you do if you are unhappy about your "walmart purchase" but I do greatly care about the choices made concerning my kids education. I am shaking my head with disbelief that you could be so dumb as to even make such a lame comparison.

Fact of the matter is the young man was probably wrong for calling the home. However he has a right to voice his opinion. Now calling someone's home early is not appropriate, but if he was frustrated and needed to find out if classes were cancelled that is a different story. No matter what he said or did the WIFE is suppose to maintain professionalism due to her husbands position as Principal of the school. She must be bigger and retrain herself with dignity, class and professionalism. Shame on her.

I once met the wife of then-Seattle Schools Superintendent Raj Manhas, who was taking a beating from critics in a perpetually problematic district. Mrs. Manhas was working as a salesperson in a fitness wear store, where she assisted me. During our conversation she learned that I was leaving on a vacation and offered to give me her home number so I could call her husband to find out the name of an inexpensive airport parking location that he had found. When our discussion later turned to the Seattle Schools and I learned who her husband was I said, "Oh, the poor man;" to which she replied something along the lines of, "It has been a wonderful experience to work with the Seattle Schools and he has learned a great deal." Mrs. Manhas was kind, classy and gracious and, to this day, I greatly admire her -- and her husband. It is amazing how very lasting an impression can be.

Living in New England as I do we often send our children off to school with far more than 3 inches on the ground and I do understand that it is a VERY difficult call to make sometimes whether or not to call of school. So often media "weather people" hype storms up so badly that adminstrators have been red faced far to many times by calling off school for a "major impending storm" only to have 1 inch dumped on us and a wasted day that has to be made up in the nice weather at the end of the year. Having said that however I have to also say that far to many times I have sent my daughter on the bus fearing for her safety as a storm rages around us yet school is not cancelled. I have even kept my child home a few times when there is a storm and school is not called off (one of these times her bus had an accident on the way to school and kids were hurt). I am sorry to have to inform this public official that he is just that, a PUBLIC official and therefore part of his job is to communicate with the public including our youth. I do not feel this kid was out of line as he did not call at an unreasonable hour, he was not rude at all, and he even left contact information so that his question could be answered. The only person I find at fault here is that snotty nasty wife of his! What a rude, arrogant snotty hag she sounds like. I am sorry but that was way out of line and you can bet if she ever talked to my kid that way when he simply called to ask a reasonable question she would be recieving the phone call to end all phone calls in return from ME. How dare he? No I say how dare she EVER refer to this or ANY kid as snotty nosed! These "snotty nosed" kids are the reason she has food to stuff in her big mouth and a roof to cover her thick head! He is in a business that deals with not only these kids but their PARENTS every day. Does she think she helped her husband at all with this irrational rude nasty call? Nope, now the parents know who to gun for when they are unhappy with school desicions more than ever and they sure wont trust this guy to be reliable on ANY front any more.

On a trivial issue like this, we debate, take sides and argue the pros and cons and possibilities and should haves and should not haves till we are blue in the face. On more important issues confronting this country like the war, the economy, the deficit, the dollar downfall, the long term viability of social security or effective means to deal with illegal immigration, there is practically no debate. Go figure.

Seriously, 6:30 and he has to get up early to determine whether or not to send kids to school. Thanks heavens, this lady did not marry a doctor.
The kid was out of line but in all the ways teenagers can be out of line this was pretty mild. But Candi seems to have had a disproportionate reaction. Far too angry about this situation. I hope that this is not typical of her reactions. And if it is maybe hearing herself sound like this will force her to get some help.

Hey Dave Kori,
Three inches only? Awww ... poor thing. Not even enuf snow to ski on. Three inches, is that all you could muster in VA? Stop wimping around and I think you might like it in my hometown in Maine. On the other hand, better not risk coming during winter - you might draw too much attention dressing up more than an eskimo would in cold artic freeze.

Hmm...first of all, to all the people who think that just because he's a kid he's automatically a dimwitted fool, you guys seriously need to open your minds up. I'm 18 years old...I'm autistic, too, and I don't have a problem putting most adults at my school to the point where they can't respond without making them look even worse...and if you're one to use stereotypes when judging people, I'm pretty sure I'd have no problem making you look bad. The wife...I won't even start with her. As for the kid posting the message on Youtube...well, that woman deserves the negative publicity.

Don't know what the kid said, but either way the wife lowered herself to the level of the kid she was complaining about by acting that way. She says he should grow up, and he should. But she is an adult, and she acted like a teenager, they were both wrong, but her's is compounded by the fact that she should have acted like an adult.

It is a shame that society and lawyers has made it difficult to live. We are quick to jump and quick to blame.
Yes we live in a very diverse area and people come from all parts of the world where people have never seen snow. Very understandable...I worry about the next driver as anyone should. I have traveled many countries and quickly try to learn the local area and customs.
It is purely wrong for a student to call ones house regarding snow. If his intentions should have been a different issue regarding teachers, gangs or something more prudent than several inches of snow. He should have gone to a different person on the totem pole. If the individual is not listening or answering his/her question then and only then do you go to the next level. BUT to shoot to the TOP. Unacceptable. This is teaching this child that it is OK to sidestep other authority along the path and waste countless time that this other person has to deal with. Plus demean the authoritative steps he has stepped on.
I understand sometimes skipping a step...BUT this was too far up the pole.
I know many of us have lived in areas where 6+ inches would have been a slight concern if at all. It is just sad that today people are trying so hard to get their 5 minutes of fame. Fame through avenues that could cause more harm than good.
Yes as Tax payers I want the best for my children. I want them to deal with situations like walking to school and dealing with the elements. Teaching independence is a key for survival. If we continue to coddle our children and squeal like school girls during a Hanna Montana concert. Then we have failed and failing as a society.
Yes we have elements today that we did not have years ago. But as generations change, so does our schooling, as does our defenses. Survival of the fittest is not left to reproducing anymore it is learning and passing on what we have learned.
Never in a million years would I or my friends/family would have done such a thing... Deal with it and move on. If your family thinks it is unsafe then they can make the call.
BTW we have given this child too much time on this issue. Lets move on...

Yea, get rid of the kid. Spoiled, demanding, entitled. should be expelled for calling an administrators home. Snow days are hard to call even with the best of information. I get so sick of kids who don't get it but what's worse are these kids parents. Where the heck are they?
You go girlfriend. Go Candy go.

I teach in Fairfax county, and agree with the students that it was a bad call not to close schools. My commute home was icy and dangerous and there were many accidents. There were 5 - 6 inches of snow on my car when I left. Granted, it was no blizzard, but this part of the country lacks the ablity to remove snow efficiently.
Posted by: fairfax teacher | January 23, 2008 8:21 PM
Understand Officials reported 67 accidents from 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.. It's not the snow but the dumb ars drivers in their 4X4 SUV that make the roads unsafe. I say lets drag the underpaid-under appreciated teachers through the ice/snow as well.... If I was paid six figures I would hope I could get it right. It's not like only Fairfax and Loudoun got it wrong. Check and see the other less counties got it right....

What's disgusting about this is the idea that this Kori kid thinks he's on a level playing field with an adult. What ever happened to young people respecting older people, or has the power of being able to use the internet and gather information so empowered them that they feel they are on a level playing field with adults. A woman screaming at such a rude smart ass kid should be no problem. He says "we have a different sense of privacy". He means no privacy. What he needs is a good kick in the ass, but wait, that would violate his civil rights. Self-centered young people like him are disgusting.

One thing is clear from many of these comments: an awful lot of people don't know the difference between a public SERVANT and a public SLAVE.
If I have a problem with something I bought at Wal-Mart, I don't call the manager at home, even if his/her number is listed. I sure don't presume to tell him how to do his job.
I can't get the recording of the wife's call to come up, so I don't know exactly what she said. I also don't know what the student said to her, since there is no recording of his call. It seems like the superintendent's wife went overboard; however, she has the same right to free speech that the young man has been applauded for exercising.

I think both parties used 'bad' judgement. What did the wife teach the child? That it is okay to lose your cool, over a teenager? At the same time, he needs to realize that the world doesn't revolve around one person's wants. Especially if that person carries ZERO weight in the real world.
Posted by: Nickid | January 23, 2008 6:48 PM
I think Kori was out of line calling the administrator at home for any non-emergency reason.
I can understand the wife's response since Kori wasn't the first idiot to all and bug the Tistadt family. Sure it's not her brightest moment, but it's understandable.
In the end, Kori wasn't harmed or damaged so he should suck up the life lesson and move on.

This kid sounds like most of the 17 year olds I knew as an FCPS student: an inflated sense of entitlement and coddled by their parents to think that even their poo is gold. I don't care if he has a 3.977 GPA, it doesn't give you the right to be a jerk. I doubt he had true concerns about his "safety." After living in Fairfax County for over twenty years and never once having a snow-related accident I'm going to say he just wanted the day off and felt the need to show off for his friends.
I didn't like teenagers when I was one, and I still don't like them, mostly because they do crap like this. This kid is the type who grows up and sells celebrity sex tapes for a living. His inflated GPA only correlates to his inflated ego.
Posted by: Lynn | January 23, 2008 6:38 PM
I believe in youth asking questions, and airing their opinions. If the snow had resulted in a fatal or even serious automobile accident--this would have become a very different story. Thank heaven it didn't...but was this student's fear taken at face value? No he was just treated as most adults treat a 17 year old, as a kid. Not right, and also not right to have belittled not just him but all the kids in the county, hence all kids in America! "Snotty brats" or not, it is just plan wrong to be bad-mouthing students, no matter what they do to one! And yes, we must realize that the youth of today have a new way to respond via the internet...our words can and will be sent out to cyberspace. It is reality, plain and simple. A proverb states, "A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wiseman keeps himself under control." Enough said!
Posted by: lkpj | January 23, 2008 6:37 PM
Is it just me or are most people supporting the administrator's wife because she happens to be white and the kid happens to be a brown skinned foreign immigrant. It's pretty obvious that people's perception of who's fault is being determined by race. Stop being racists, people.
Posted by: racist slayer | January 23, 2008 6:31 PM
The kid was wrong. He was not innocent and he was a jerk for putting the call on line.
As someone who used to have to make the call as to whether we went to school or not, it is never an easy decision.
Dave needs to watch TV like everyone else, and if school is not canceled, realize that someone agonized over the decision for many hours. He doesn't deserve to have his decisions questioned by some punk.
Posted by: Mike | January 23, 2008 6:19 PM
Now another way of looking at this issue.
The student calls the school administrator and leaves message on "his" phone machine, assuming the phone is in his name.
Now does his wife have the legal right to respond to messages left for her husband?
Let us ask ourselves how about if the school super or some other school official has called and left a message asking the administraotr to call him/her back.
Would wifey have jumped the gun and gone and called them?
And please don't tell me school officials don't call each other on their cell phones and home phones.
Wifey needs a bottle of mouthwash, student needs to be spoken to if he's at fault, administrator needs to resign ---- his wife is a liability!
Posted by: Bangalee Babu | January 23, 2008 6:17 PM
The brat is suffering from First Amendment Hero delusions and from Fear of Snow.
His deepest problem is probably parents who didn't teach him to be respectful.
The administrator's wife, no way to tell if her ire was fully justified--we haven't heard the tape of brat's call.
But on what planet is it ok for a student to call a school employee at home about a school matter? especially a trivial one, like, ugh, I am afraid I'll get my feet wet, help, Fire Department, Police, Principal, I could fall and not be able to get up!
The lady, yes, she could have left a shorter message, but she could well have the last and bigger laugh.

Fairfax County Public Schools is administering their annual sex and drugs survey to selected students. The survey also asks the students questions regarding alcohol and drug use of siblings and parents. Lets talk about real violations of privacy.
No wonder why Tisdadt look so pained all the time.
Posted by: Parent | January 23, 2008 6:06 PM
Ok, maybe I haven't lived in DC long enough to understand politics, but no one has ever convinced me that we have a fundamental right to privacy (it is only implied in the constitution). If one wants privacy, one should not list his or her phone number in the phone book. Additionally, I recall a certain "do not call list" not holding up to legal challenges, which further makes me wonder how much of a right to privacy Americans actually have with regards to unwanted phone calls.
I am personally happy to see that the youth has challenged authority; after all, it is the American way. But, on the other hand, no one should have to deal with work issues when they are off-duty, and thus, he should have left the message on his office phone instead of his home phone. Facebook is the press of modern-day youth; it's a soap box that can be used to challenge issues. But then again, challenging an issue doesn't require one to publish someone else's home phone number.

How is calling someone, anyone, an invasion of privacy? It might be annoying, it might be rude, but it is clearly not an invasion of privacy. And if your address and phone is listed in the Phone book, how is posting it in an internet forum harassment or an invasion of privacy. The short version is that the Wife made a bad choice to respond in the manner that she did, and the kid used the New Media to take her to task. How many people will remember her as the Rude Administrator's Wife in a year and how many will remember him as the kid? It sticks with her and her husband for much longer than it sticks to the kid
Posted by: JoeM | January 23, 2008 5:54 PM
Attention people...elected representatives work for the people, not the other way around. As such, they are obligated to take calls at their home. If the Tisdadts doen't want people calling their home, Mr. Tisdadt can quit his job and another hopefully qualified candidate can take it. But then Mrs. Tisdadt and her supporters sound like GOP ilk, who think otherwise. You people keep voting for fools like Bush, who thinks he's the emperor of USA; and that's why we refer to you people as 'sheep'.

I think it's ridiculous that this kid thinks he has the right to call his school's COO at home to discuss a school problem. I would not dream of calling my children's teachers or administrators at home without an invitation and someone should have taught Dave this same thing. People should be able to leave work at work and a administrators wife should not have to worry about students calling her home! Whether he agrees with his administrations decisions or not he should respect their rights as much as he wants his respected. Besides, he's not an adult and he doesn't have the same rights as an adult. Obviously his parents weren't concerned enough to call why was he? If there was a problem it seems he should have had his adult parents handle it. Perhaps instead of teaching our children about all their rights and choices we need to teach them respect and accountability. I say way to go Candy! If he wants the rights of an adult then he should be able to deal with the fall out of exercises those rights poorly.

Am I the only one who suspects this wasn't the first time the administrator and his family received unwanted calls from disgruntled schoolkids (is there any other type?) at home? I think what this kid did was completely inappropriate and is deserving of discipline. Working in public service is not a license to permit harrassment of one's family at home, and the wife's response was spot on. Enough coddling of irresponsibility.
Posted by: Snowbird | January 23, 2008 5:45 PM
The issue here is not whether or not school should have been canceled. The issue is whether Devraj should have made a call to the home of public administrator who made a decision which impacted his life.
The answer is yes, he should have made that call. It is very democratic to question your leaders on the decisions they make which impact your life. Would it be wrong to call the President's cell phone to question why he sent thousands of American to die in Iraq? Would it be wrong to call Obama's home number and ask why he thinks you should vote for him? A public official is in the public spotlight and is not entitled to the same level of privacy that everyone else is entitled to.
If you want to live in a secluded cave where no one will talk to you then you shouldn't be a public official and you shouldn't have a publically listed phone number.
If you hate kids, then you shouldn't take a job in which you control their lives.
If you think a kid is incredibly obnoxious, you probably shouldn't prove you're even more obnoxious and immature by calling him back to tell him off.
Oh, and my company would be glad to hire Devraj when he graduates university. Although he'd probably be better off as a state senator.

To all you out-of-towners - that was a BAD driving day, and the kids got out of school when the ice was at its worst. I know a whole lot of adults that left work a little early that day because the traffic was horrendous. I'm from a "snow belt" State and ice around here is actually scarier than 9" of snow elsewhere.
I can understand why people get upset with annoying phone messages. But most people either hit "delete" or pass the message. Mrs. Tisdadt clearly went out of her way to return the call and let the kid have it. Do you think she reacts like this when fundraisers or alumni groups call? I'm thinking she needs a Valium and a vacation.

The most chilling statement in the article:
"It's really an issue of kids learning what is acceptable and not acceptable. Any call to a public servant's house is harassment," Regnier said in an interview.
It's absolutely time for grown-ups to start acting like grown-ups and accept the responsibility that comes with public service. Punishing children, or lashing out at them verbally for legitimately petitioning a public official for a redress of grievance is at the very least childish and irresponsible itself. If the public official had acted this way, I dare say it would have tarnished the public trust.
Way to go, kid!

I am a 31-year-old professional woman who is wholeheartedly in support of the posting of the wife's rant on the internet.
I don't think Kori was correct in calling the administrator at home. That was poor judgment. But c'mon, the kid is 17--the part of his brain that controls reason and judgment (frontal lobes) hasn't even been fully developed yet. And the wife's shrieky and rage-filled reaction was beyond the bounds of appropriateness in talking to ANYONE, much less a 17-year-old kid who rather should have been taught a gentle lesson about protocol.
I'm sure Kori's intent was not to be obnoxious; he probably thought he was being brave and standing up to "the system." What he did was misguided, but not, in ANY way, "harassment."
I love that the wife got her very public comeuppance. I'm sure Kori is not the only person she has spoken to in that manner.
Posted by: Anastasia | January 23, 2008 4:44 PM
Whose judgment is worse, a 17-year-old kid who inappropriately calls a school administrator at home, or a (presumably middle-aged) school administrator who is dumb enough to have a listed telephone number? Don't get me wrong, I think Kori crossed a line here, but I cannot imagine why any public or quasi-public official would have a listed phone number that any crackpot (or worse) can get their hands on. People are capable of anything, after all...
Posted by: courthouseguy | January 23, 2008 4:42 PM
To Stantheman,
Whatever the administrator's name is, is neglegable. On the grounds of it being harassment as a person's home, it is indeed. However he's 17 and kids around his age still have little regrad to what is "proper" ediquet. The law is blind on this matter and he will most likely not even get a slap on the wrist on this. Guess what? "That's life." "Them's the breaks." It isn't fair. And insulting my education isn't going to change that fact.
If Mrs. Tisdat went to the proper channels like she should have, the focus would be on the kid and not her and he would have probably be suspended. But she did not. She decided to take the matter into her own hands and the kid was smart enough, though wrongfully, to broadcast it to every every form of media outlet possible and now the public is eatting it up.
Posted by: Former FCPS Student | January 23, 2008 4:37 PM
That the kid thought he had a right to a day off with 3 inches of snow says bucketloads about our risk averse and permissive society. That a 17 year old acted immaturely should be no surprise to anyone. The wife could have handled it better. To those of you dissing high scool teaching staff, I'm willing to bet you wouldn't last ten minutes in that environment. While the incident itself is small potatoes, its one of those occasional events that gives us a window to our world. I'm not sure I like what I see, but I'm not surprised.

As a public high school teacher in San Jose, California, I have sometimes given my personal phone number to students when I know that they might need to reach me after hours about something important related to school; however, I make it clear why I'm giving them my number and when they can use it. I expect a call *only* for the stated reason and *only* during the timeframe I've specified. I have never had a problem.
Mr. Kori's main problem was a lack of understanding about what's appropriate and what's not; he should NOT be calling a administrator's home.
But what disturbs me more is how the administrator's wife reacted. It was natural of her to have such a strong reaction at Mr. Kori's boundary slippage, but it was not appropriate for her to speak to him the way she did. As a teacher, if I spoke that way to one of my students--whatever the reason--I would likely be censured or even fired.
(Incidentally, I went to Lake Braddock!)

To john65001: In reference to "these losers". Your comment is asinine. As a husband of a high school teacher, I see what these folks have to deal with in rude and belligerent children of my fellow workers in the +200K income range. These intelligent but socially inept children have no idea what the real world is like, and turn to their parents with their plush homes and Land Rovers as the example of what their lives will be like right after graduation. If and when they finally leave home, if their parents don't fund their room and board while they are in college, they suddenly realize just how hard it is to make it in the metro area where they are forced to room with friend due to extremely high rent and living costs. Far be it for these teachers and administrators, who chose to help provide an education to a new generation of people, to do their job without being relentlessly criticized for their work. My wife's educational background is in law and she would have made a very good attorney, but she chooses to give back to the community, take a massive pay cut to teach our heirs to this country. Cut these folks some slack.
As for Kori: Of course Kori will get a job when he graduates. At the least, his father's firm will hire him. That is the practice in the D.C. area. Will he make a good leader? Only time will tell; but his current actions speak otherwise. Today's children are very smart and intelligent; they lack street smarts and emotional intelligence, and these two are worth more than any GPA or honor society, and will be the determinate on whether their jobs are held by similarly ranked foreigners or themselves. Good luck! Our country needs it.

A case where the student was asking "why?" but in an inappropriate format and forum. Making the phone # public was inviting harassment, and making only her commentary available for play on the internet begs for questioning of his credibility and his intentions.
The superintendent should NOT have to privatize his # to avoid this kind of behavior from students or their parents but it would have shown some smarts if he had.
And i cannot remember when in my schooling in NOVA that 2 inches got me out of school!

I went to HS in Florida over a decade ago. We never had a snow day, but I'd imagine a flake falling on Brevard County soil would have a thrown the whole system into a panic! Ok, really... the issue comes to safety. Is it reasonably safe?
To say that its only two inches, or a foot, or a dusting is not necessarily the entire picture. Widespread icing and poorly treated roads are the real things for which to look out. Nobody seems to know how to drive in this weather anyhow!
Its so easy to marginalize these kids. They are still kids. They don't have a greater sense of the real world. OK, given. And, as far as school is concerned, whether they like it or not, decisions are being made for them.
That does not mean that they are incapabile of understanding the importance of decisions being made for them. Its up to their parents to advocate for them. Some of these kids, though I suspect Kori ain't one of them, do not have any parental involvement. Some parents also back away from involvement in the name of giving more independence. In essense, they have no surrogates but themseleves.
And, they have EVERY RIGHT to petition on behalf of themselves in the name of safety. Unfortuenately, those that have legitimate claims and grievences can have their voice overshadowed by pranksters and other subboteurs. This is what probably led to the frustration from the FC School admin's wife.
This all comes down to disconnect. Kori, what you did wasn't uncalled for, and you had EVERY right to get that information - but the manner by which you got it was... well impatient. Hey sometimes you got to be rude to get a point across, but still, I wouldn't have been surprised to get ripped in a phone call back.
To the FC School admin/wife... welcome to the internet age. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. Anyone with a cell phone, video/audio recorder could make mother theresa on a bad day look like nurse ratched.
I guess to anyone - treat people better. Karma is a ... well you know.

As a parent in an area where there is not a lot of snow, we have few snow days. However, I also work for the local school system--at one point in the transportation department. As a parent, no matter what decision is made by the school system, if I feel it is not safe for my child to attend school, I keep her home. I do the same for myself when I am required to report to work as an office employee, while schools are closed for students and teachers. If a student calls someone at home and leaves a message and he also has the technology capability and mental capacity to post the reply to the Internet but not enough common sense to determine whether he should stay home--GO TO SCHOOL. You need additional educational training--perhaps: COMMON SENSE 101!

This experience raises the question of our expectations of privacy. I hope I wouldn't respond the way the wife did, but I'm not sure it's fair to have to respond to personal calls to our homes expecting that whatever we say may be spread around the internet.

Tempest in a tea pot, sounds like the school administrator has been neglecting his homework. Kori will make a great business development director. BD

THE YOUNG MAN DID NOT MAKE THE CALL TO HARASS THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR.HE DID WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS RIGHT AND HE WAS CONCERNED. THE SPOUSE MADE IT WRONG WHEN SHE WAS RUDE AND ABNOXIOUS TO THE STUDENT. SOMEONE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR HER COMMENTS. I BELIEVE THE HUSBAND SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO THE STUDENT OR STUDENTS THAT FEEL INTRUDED UPON BY THE INCIDENT. PROVIDE A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR THE STUDENTS TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION IN THE FUTURE. BY HANDLING THIS IN AN APPROPRIATE AND QUICK MANNER THEY CAN CALM SOME OF THE HEAT THAT WAS GENERATED BY THE CALL.

Kori lacks common sense and courtesy, which is a common trait among youth.
Mrs. Tisdadt lacks common sense and courtesy, which is much less common among adults.
As noted above, why was she responding (and rudely) on behalf of her husband? I would never presume to do so for my wife.
Also as noted above, if Mr. and Mrs. Tisdadt do not wish to receive the occasional inane phone call, they should delist their number. This is particularly true of public figures.

I didn't hear the student's message, so I can't comment on it. I just know that it's the adult's job to deal with the matter appropriately. As for those supposed losers, they are raising your kids for you, so they deserve some respect, with a few exceptions. For every teacher who is out of touch, or does something dumb, there are 50 more who are doing what needs to be done and doing it well.

Earlier someone said that this kid would walk away to better things and the administrator and his wife would be stuck in their pathetic lives.
1. I doubt we can judge what type of lives they lead.
2. The poster is awfully optimistic about the student's future. He may spend the next twenty years in retail. Especially after he quits a couple of jobs because he thinks their policies are unfair. People keep saying "he has a 3.997". Who cares, its high school. If you can't get at least a 3.5 in high school you're lazy. AND it won't matter much after you graduate anyway.

To Former FCPS Student - It appears FCPS failed in its duty to educate in at least one case. Believer on ...? His salary includes his phone number???
On the issue of a public servant having "little to no personal privacy," you are just plain flat wrong. A "public servant" doesn't lose his right to privacy AT HOME just because he has chosen one job over another. NO-ONE has an obligation to endure harrasment at home. Regardless of what hapened afterward, that student was way out of line calling his home.
And "Dean" is his first name. He is not "the Dean."

Good for Kori. I'd offer him a job when he graduates! If miss wifey hadn't been so over-the-top, I doubt he'd ever have posted it online. I love that the internet at least might stop these protected public school officials (& their spouses) and make them think. This might stop them from acting poorly ---especially around our kids. She's the grownup here. Next time maybe she'll "let it go" like our kids (and we as parents) have to do when public school officials behave badly or just fail to teach--and we can't do anything about it!

Took over a 100 posts before I could only find one post that ID'd the actual problem.
"1. Kids -- even Fairfax County high school seniors on the debate team with a 3.9 GPA -- don't have a say in whether the schools close or stay open, and if they don't like the decision, then, you know, so what. No one cares. Kids have always wanted snow days. Adults too, to be fair. But it's one of those little life lessons that you don't always get what you want. Even if you're some smarty-pants kid from Burke with a crushing sense of entitlement.
2. Technology doesn't change anything about any of the above."
The posting of the voicemail on the internet is a separate issue, but as many other posts have pointed out suggests the same oversized ego and lack of judgement displayed in making the call in the first place.
I will predict it is inevitable that someone offended by this will track this loser, and his loser parents, down and post their personal info on the internet and the cycle will repeat itself.

dot.comment.comment below, in a comment on comments, comments: "We could potentially get into some kind of infinite loop here." This I suspect is WaPo's business wish. Works for me. LOL.

Another sad case of someone growing indignant because someone dared point out what an ass they had been. I don't see her response as inappropriate at all. She was justifiably pissed off at the number of obnoxious people (Kori wasn't the only one) who were harassing the Tistdats at home. A kid who calls a government official at home because he doesn't want to go to school can certainly be described as a "brat", "snotty-nosed" or not. He claims calling them wasn't harassment, but his internet posting of their home and cell phone numbers certainly is. That he feels no shame publicly spreading his own obnoxiousness speaks loudly of his upbringing.
I am shaking my head at the sympathetic light the media is shining on this brat. Go Mrs. Tistdat!

Soooo what's next for this episode in our consumer driven materialistic society? A playboy spread offer for Candy Tistadt?
Posted by: Jim | January 23, 2008 2:25 PM
They were both wrong. It's disrespectful for a student to call a teacher or administrator at home. But the administrator or his wife should have handled the situation by contacting the school principal. If were the kid's parent, I would insist that he write a letter of apology to the administrator and prohibit him from talking about the incident anywhere, including the Internet. I would also--politely--express concern to the administrator about the inappropriate nature of the wife's response.

me thinks Candy Tistadt is angry because she doesn't get 'it' enough from Mr. Tistadt anymore. I support Dave Kori 100 percent and think he did the right thing, while Candy Tistadt sounds like your typical spoiled wisteria lane suburban airhead bimbo wife who sleeps with the pool boy and make no contibutions to society. BTW, parents...if you name your daughter candy you pretty much set up her future.

Were any of Mrs. Tisdat's rights of privacy violated by this student airing (publishing) her phone call on FaceBook without her knowledge or consent?
Posted by: Armen28 | January 23, 2008 2:04 PM
This kid is a flippin' pantywaist if he can't deal with the least amount of snow.
And the wife should've just deleted the message and forgotten all about it.
Posted by: sparky | January 23, 2008 1:50 PM
Doug, if you agree that what this kid did was right, how about you post your home/cell phone number so those of us can call you at home and use our first amendment right to critique your article.
Posted by: WHAT?!!?! | January 23, 2008 1:25 PM
As a former sutdent at FCPS I can understand kids wanting to get out of school and enjoy a snowday, however we as tax payers, as paying money out of our pockets to ensure that you get the best education.
As for the wife of the Dean's, while I agree on the subject matters of the weather and children education. For a brief time, I lived in PA where we would still have to go to school even though there is over 6 inches of snow on the ground.
I, however, do not agree on the way she had handled the situation. As the while of an elected public official, what you say on certain issues can reflect upon your husband one way or another. He is a public servant and as someone serving our community, it affords him and his family little to no personal privacy, hence the word "public". The Dean's address is made public, and his salary is public and that includes his home phone number. While I'm a firm believer of the First Amendment, you can not blow up on a high school student. For one, he is 17 and at that point in life, he is taught our rights as an american so he too know of the First Amendment and people should not under estimate our youth because one day, they are the ones going to be running this very nation.
Secondly, I really don't give a hoot if her husband is up at the crack of dawn. Every other hard working american gets up around that time to go to work. I get up that early, and there are many occations that I am still at work until the early parts of the morning, but I don't complain about it. That's the career I choose and I ahve to live with it and so does he.

Those of you who think that Kori is better than the wife seem to have missed the point. SHE isn't a school official but she's the one who received the call. The response was HER response, not her husband's, and SHE presumably enjoys the same freedom of speech that Kori does, including the right to make rude responses to rude messages left on her family's voice mail. If anything, the fact that Kori has to keep one-upping by going to the Internet confirms that she had him pegged correctly...
I wonder how many calls from the self-centered Kori's of the world she has to deal with each school year?
Posted by: Astounded | January 23, 2008 1:13 PM
Numerous readers commented to the effect that despite his GPA, "this kid won't go far." I have to assume they don't live in America, where, for better or for worse, aggression propels achievement.

Kori has done what every student at some point or another has wanted to do. The great thing is, he harnessed the power of the internet to do it. This is what high school kids do nowadays. I think what he did was warranted, given the response by the school administrator's SPOUSE. I don't think I would ever respond to a work related call for my spouse. She should be ashamed, embarrassed, and should apologize publicly. Kori has decent grades and is resourceful, and had every right to do what he did after he received that call. The internet knows all and sees all...
Posted by: TB1 | January 23, 2008 12:44 PM
Why doesn't he post his home number and adddress if he is such a big man?
Posted by: Ed A | January 23, 2008 12:40 PM
Perhaps this invasion of privacy, everyone should have a haven that only those they love will infringe, will prompt this student to grow up and become a supt.
Posted by: growing up | January 23, 2008 12:02 PM
An anonymous Internet poster calling someone a "tough guy" and demanding he posts his real name and telephone number...
I'm not sure if that's irony or merely hypocrisy.
Posted by: dot.comments.comments.comments | January 23, 2008 11:50 AM
As long as we can only hear the response to the original call, we have no idea what kind of message Kori left that may or may not have instigated Mrs. Tisdat's admittedly intemperate response. Regardless, any student who thinks it's appropriate to call the home number of an administrator to complain about snowfall not cancelling school is entirely wrong.
Posted by: CallMeSkeptical | January 23, 2008 11:47 AM
Now this is weird. Am I supposed to comment on the comments? We could potentially get into some kind of infinite loop here.
Posted by: dot.comments.comments | January 23, 2008 11:45 AM
Come on kid! You should be ashamed of yourself. On your own Facebook page you say that if two inches of snow won't cancel school, you don't know what will. This is utterly ridiculous. It takes a lot more than two inches to close school. And if your supposed "polite" call was simply asking how the decision is made, why don't you just go online and look for yourself, it's all there in print and video.
Did you ever think that Mr. Tisdadt was busy doing his job and can't call back every kid who wants to get out of school for nothing?
Shame on you. Post your own phone number online so people can call YOU, tough guy.
