Readers Distrust Polls, Candidates

There's nothing like a poll to bring out the intensity of feelings that Readers Who Comment have about politicians and journalists. A new Washington Post - ABC News poll today says that Sen. Barack Obama holds a 10-point lead over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton when Democrats are asked whom they would prefer to see as the party's presidential nominee. In hypothetical general-election matchups, Obama holds a narrow five-point lead over McCain, while McCain is three points ahead of Clinton, which is within poll's margin of error. McCain has been gaining ground in recent polls on each of his potential rivals, Dan Balz and Jon Cohen report.

As happens with all polling stories, many comments come from readers who say they don't like or trust polls or who insist that the polls have been skewed to favor the candidate they oppose. Most of the rest of the comments contain political analysis, cheerleading for a candidate or attacks on the other candidate.

One creative correspondent this morning repeated the posts of others, but changed the name of the candidates and other specifics to reverse the intent of the original post. Other readers noticed and filed correctives.

Some readers want to know why we're keeping the full story from them by writing about the results, with some interpretation, but hiding the data. Complete polling data -- including dates of polling, methodology and earlier results to the same questions are here. The fact all this stuff can be provided is one of the great advantages Internet distribution has over print, but that's another story.

We'll start with dunnhaupt, who said, "The poll shows that more people think Obama better understands their problems. It looks like the "bitter" story backfired, because people really ARE bitter, only Hillary doesn't get it." [The polling was done just as the bitter story was breaking.]

But TALVES wrote that "Obama has no chance in the general election even if he manages to hold on to the nomination. He is a lying hypocrite who is not qualified to be president."

martiniano said, "Isn't it obvious to everyone that Hillary is a Republican? Of course the Dems are for Obama. Hey, if you like what's been going on for the last 7 years then vote for the McCentury/Clinton ticket. But if you are bitter and disgusted like me then vote for Obama..."

ephemerella charged that "...Pro-Obama press like the Washington Post has succeeded on driving Clinton's negatives up whenever Obama has a problem, to drive keep her polling beneath him. But you did so at the cost of alienating Clinton voters, who are more than happy to vote for McCain."

fullmoonsteve joined in, writing, "...i don't like McCain, but obama scares me even more! i'm for hillary and if not her then in november like many others, this dem. votes for McCain"

jonathanR was one of several who said, "...The greatest way to unite the republicans behind McCain would have been to nominate Clinton."

greenacres2000 wrote, "...I can't understand McCain polling anywhere close to any Democrat as he is just a continuation of what we've had for 8 disasterous years. What of Bush could people possibly want more of - unless they are invested in a defense contractor in Iraq?"

celested9 said, "...At this point, national polls are meaningless. Furthermore, the only poll that counts is at the ballot box and Hillary will win there..."

johnkwhite1 added, "I wonder how many Americans believe that the media is biased and unfair in its reporting and polling. I have absolutely no trust in most reporting or in any polling by media on the Democratic primary..."

ScamfortheRich wrote, "Obama would still lose the swing states like Missouri, Ohio, and probably Pennsylvania to McCain in the general election. Obama should be the VP to Hillary at the top of the ticket and they would win."

daniel3715 said that "...Slanted biased polling is exactly what a doddering brain dead John McCain expects will put him in the back door of the White House... Hillary just needs to stay the course, she will put this country on the road to peace and prosperity..."

brewstercounty wrote, "...It's not over. A solid win in PA puts Clinton right back in the hunt for the nomination."

zb95 said, "Polls of Obama or Clinton versus McCain are meaningless at this point. Once the Dem nominee is selected and the party unites behind him/her, then check the polls."

joeparadis wrote, "I just don't believe this poll. The press has made such a tranparent and aggressive effort to destroy her and her candidacy that I think this is a put up job. Is it any wonder that journalists are the most reviled of "professionals." "

We'll close with the exchange on rewriting comments that I referred to earlier. It started when alarico wrote, "Hillary sucks. She is a disgrace to the Democratic Party. A Republican at heart, since her days as a Goldwater girl. Go home, Hillary the Rat! Go and run with McCain!"

Then brigittepj wrote, "alarico wrote: Barack sucks. He is a disgrace to the Democratic Party. A Muslim at heart, since his days as a Farrakhan man. Go home, Barack the Rat! Go and run with Wright!"

And alarico responded to brigittepj, "You're a moron misquoting me like that. I don't care about a candidate's religion as long as they keep church and state separate. You're a prejudiced idiot..."

All comments on the polling story are here.

I am 5'8" and in face-to-face conversation Sen. McCain is probably two inches shorter than I am. The article today on his temper describes him as 5'9". I'd like to know the source of that statistic.

Mr. Sir Obama
Only you can be the President. Neither McCain nor Hillary can do so. I say because you just show it. Your face and chin looking high, the great black suit, and firm face - all these and your ability to weather any storm, just about any storm is remarkable. No matter whether you have the World's most radicals, or bombers, or sniper shooters, or real estate crooks - all as friends or not, you have stars in my reading of your luck that tell me that NO ONE ELSE but you can be our President starting the Year 2009. Your Saturn is in great position and so is your Jupiter. The art I follow is a chinese one.

Latest Independent Polls in Pennsylvania say Obama leading Clinton by small margin.

Why does Obama not wear US Flag pin? I used to know that Muslims do not bow or turn head down to anyone but Mohamed.

It is for the Democrats to lose this November Election. As it was to the last two. Obama can not win NY, Pa, Ca, Florida, Michigan, Texas, Ohio. With these six and possibly ten Middle states who have always voted Republic in all of the past six Elections, Obama is bound to lose. Democratic party better shake up Dean and his brain to think better. Convince the superdelegates to go Hillary way or lose in General Election.

So interesting to see wave go away from Obama so soon. Wait till he is in front of the Republicans. Wonder how he would withstand the charge when facing against a War Hero McCain when come answer to his friendships with Ayers and like and Hamas leaders. Is this what Obama is? Is this the CHANGE he is talking about that we will have looters and robbers and bombers freely roaming our streets in Washington? Right or wrong there is a system in Washington that is what it is after some hundred and fifty years after our Freedom. Not all people in all states can go to washington. so we have lobbysts, so we have people who claim knowing decision makers in Washington. The world calls them now as Specialists and Lobbysts. So is it wrong to work thru these people ? Why? After all a farmer group in Kansas can not go to Washington and help make decision that will favor Kansas. There are farmers other places too. It is this group of Farmer Lobbysts whose job it is or supposed to be the most knowledgeable of issues with ALL farmers in the United States and develop a Due Diligence before any change in existing farmer laws can be made. It in itself becomes a pool of solid knowledge to the farmers all around in all states. Is Obama planning to change this method of workmanship. Agree that the system may have some bad connnotations developed over the many years. Yes some clean up may be necessary. But that is not what He - Obama - is saying. He wants to end all of the good things or bad things and come up with his virgin brand of Washington that no one yet has any idea about. THe BEst is that Senator Obama goes home to his Mansion in Chicago and write a couple of books of his experience. But that is it. Do not become our President, Mr. obama.

I agree with Yolanda from Pennsylvania. Obama has taken people from other states by a ride. Um Um. Not here. We Pennsylvanians think differently. We are one of the oldest States in the Union and can make out the difference between all talk and all work. Go Hillary Guys....No Obama for me. He can stay friends with Rezko and Ayers and whoever else. I wonder how he is Senator from Illiois.

Polls in this election have meant little to me because information about the Candidates has been changing so much. I did not know about Obama's friendly ties with those who bombed our country, ob clinics, and more. I did not know much about hillary's bosnia up front. I was just confused because in one video I even saw her take a shelter coming down from chopper. What was that? Anyways both candidates have negatives that keep coming at different times. Polls do not reflect that on timely basis so I think. I think Hillary is better of the two as she can convince me more now that I find Obama not willing to put my country's pin on his coat. I dont want him to make any decision for me or my country if he can not proudly wear my country's pin. he is not a God.

ALL
Polls per se have a statistical error built in
1, By whom ever is conducting the poll
2, By the tone of the questions, slanted to achieve desired results
3, By the person taking the poll, desiring to fudge the results, even by one vote
4. By the location, current events surronding the poll taker
5. By the very aspects of statistics, the rules of statistics.
Statistics can be and are bent to reveal what the the statistician desires.
There is an old saying about statistics and statististians but it is unseemly to post that here.

Clinton supporters do not trust polls because these are the same polls that showed her losing in California and even with Obama in Ohio. It is obvious that not only is the media advocating for Obama but so are the pollsters. They are determined to have Obama as the nominee. They are afraid that an intelligent woman in the White House might actually fix the many problems we are currently facing.
It is saddening when strong women like Nancy Pelosi and Campbell Brown (CNN) are also afraid of a female president just out of pure unequivocal jealousy.

polls... schmolls...

How is it that the media hasn't figured out, that the polls have been useless this year? Or is it just that they have nothing else to go on?

These three strutting, weaseling, puppets are the best presidential candidates we can find out of 300,000,000 people?

It truly is the last act in, The Rise, Decline, And Fall Of The American Empire...

On this historic day - when thousands gathered to sing Happy Birthday to the Holy Father and honor this beloved man....

and the Crowds at the White House this morning sorta - kinda makes Obama seem -- well let's just say Irrelevant ~ Like ~ Immaterial - Like "Beside the point"

The fact that this country was founded on God-given principles was very evident today - So glad that the Holy Father was welcomed by a God-fearing President - not a presidentin the Clinton ilk - and that refers to BOTH Clintons!

I am always curious when one cable news outlet presents one poll as that most "defining" of all polls. There are usually within any given seven day period 5 or 6 polls with one candidate at +14 or a -3.

It always seems that MSNBC selects that poll which most favors Obama. Now why is that? Could Olbermann be biased? It's like saying, could David Shuster be any more vulgar.

WASHINGTON (AP) - All five Roman Catholic justices on the Supreme Court were invited to Wednesday night's splashy White House dinner in honor of Pope Benedict XVI.
Republican presidential contender John McCain will be there, too. But Democratic rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, who had a nationally broadcast debate scheduled Wednesday night, were not invited.

Comments - I find this so interesting and wonderful!

The writer of this article should have made it clear that it is the Clinton supporters who got angry at the journalists and pollsters for telling the truth. Have you noticed the pattern yet? These same people will love you tomorrow if you say that it is their big Mama who is actually leading in polls.

Want to make America a better and safer place? Here's how in three easy steps; Register as an Independent, refuse to answer any polls and most importantly, vote every incumbent in Congress out of office....these are the self serving people who have mismanaged our Nation's affairs and allowed Bush to happen.

We have come so used to the bias love fest with Obama media that we don't pay any attention anymore. We do our own reporting! Those polls are nothing more then propaganda to be used by the bias media. We don't pay any attention to them either. We just don't trust the press any longer as being a true press. We see it as someone wanting to elect our leaders for us. We need the UN to come in and make sure our elections are honest! That is so sad to say!
