Today's Hot Topic: The Hamas Takeover

Hamas: The NYT calls Hamas's takeover of the Gaza Strip "a defeat for Palestinians, and a defeat for Israeli and American policy as well," and argues that for "Washington and Jerusalem to exert constructive influence in this dangerous situation, they urgently need to adopt a new and wiser approach to Palestinian politics. That means doing more to help [Palestinian President Mahmoud] Abbas in the only currency that really counts, easing the lives of ordinary Palestinians" ... in the WaPo, Martin Indyk argues that while many have interpreted Hamas's takeover as a defeat for President Abbas, it could actually precipitate Hamas's downfall: "Whatever transpires, Gaza has become Hamas's problem. It's a safe bet that the real attitude of Abbas and Fatah is: Let Hamas try to rule Gaza, and good luck" ... in the WSJ, Barry Rubin argues that Hamas's seizure of the Gaza Strip "opens a new period in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict" because it means that a new "Islamist state" is now being established in the Middle East.

>> -- This NEW "Islamist state" would not have been established if the Americans had not one-sidedly supported Israel since its creation, to the detriment of the Palestinians.

It is a tragedy for a people who are imprisoned and denied the most basic resources for survival in what is currently the world's worst concentration camp, to be reduced to defend their democratic right to govern without US and Israeli armed intervention (covertly arming Fatah). The US and Israel are blatantly trying to wipe Palestine off the map. Hamas may have won this round, but they are no match for the mightiest power (and the most dangerous) on the planet!

If Hamas was elected by the Palesinians, how come it is a defeat for them?

"It's a safe bet that the real attitude of Abbas and Fatah is: Let Hamas try to rule Gaza, and good luck""

I'm a supporter of neither faction, but it's also a safe bet to say that Hamas government will fair better than the Fatah one, whose political figures, the likes of Dahlan, enjoy building 100-million dollar towers in Dubai while people in Gaza are starving.

The ascension of Hamas and Hezbollah are blowback from US destruction of Iraq. So will be nuclear proliferation in Muslim countries other than Iran. This is the reward we reap for US politicians doing what oil companies, short-sighted Israeli hardliners and their American Christian fundamentalist allies wanted.

To all of those already whining about how the C.O. has messed things up, what's Congress doing to fix things? Oh that's right, they're busy passing laws to change the names of Federal buildings or sites. Let's see your Democratic party do something right... or do something at all.

Maybe the middle east was designed to be violent. For those who suggest that we help, I ask why.

Posted by: Abaddon | June 15, 2007 11:54 AM

I say let Iran supply Hamas with all the weapons they want and let Saudia Arabi supply Fatah with all the weapons they want and let the two kill as many of the other side as possible.

The United States and particularly our moron Secretary of State Rice should keep their big noses out of this fight and spend not one penny on these two gangs of thugs.

This would lead to fewer FakePalestinians in our planet's gene pool and give Israel some much deserved rest from constant terrorist attacks by the FakePalestinians.

The New York Times, as usual, finds every example of Palestinian dysfunctionality and barbarism to be the result of American or Israeli attitudes or actions. This mindless Occidentalism needs to be challenged. Unless one believes that Israel is the cause of all evil in the world (a view unfortunately held by some billions, including the leftists and Islamists that have forged an unlikely and dispicable partnership) what remains is placing blame where it belongs: on the intractability or the Palestinians and their refusal to agree to a settlement of any kind. The reason? It is not a matter of Palestinian nationalism but something much more deeply embedded in the Arab/Muslim mentality: there can be no infidel state in the heart of what they believe is "Dar el Islam." To them, the Jews, despite being the historical ur-population have no place in what they believe and fantasize will be a unitary Muslim patrimony. There is finally NO DISTINCTION between "secularists" and Islamo-fascists, so called nationalist "moderates" (Abbas, the Holocaust denier is now a "moderate) and Islamic "extremists." If taking an annihilationist stance on Israel is "extremist" well then ALL Palestinian leaders and factions are extreme. Israel's fate: to endure stoically in the face of evil and madness and take whatever actions it must to survive. The sad fact is that with only a few exceptions, most of the "sins" attributed to the Israelis are policies forced upon them by the unrelenting hatred and fanatical irrendentism of their foes. They have, tragically, no other alternative than to live by the sword. As to what the future Palestinian State that the "New York Times" and other naive "sophiticates" advocate over cocktails in New York City --will look like is not a mystery. It exists today in Gaza, a copy of Somalia. It exists in the venal West Bank. Take your pick: one a home of religious fanaticism and the other of rampant corruption. And now there are two.

It is my understanding that the administration pushed for early elections even as they were advised against this by those who knew the region. They got their early elections, and, like every other big policy plan they have promoted, it didn't turn out the way they had planned. Even so, they could have tried to meet with Hamas leaders who had been democratically elected, and worked out some policies that would have been adventagious to both the west and Hamas but, as usual, our president (or perhaps the pupeteer) refused to acknowlege the result of the election and tried to undermine those election results in any and all ways. If you have a little wider perspective and the intelligence of a fruitfly, you could have expected this outcome. It seems every endeavor they've tried with such high hopes has ended in flames--yet they continue with Jesus, abortion, gays and tax cuts to hold onto the few ditto heads in tow.

Proves again as I personally witnessed 40years ago that to negotiate with Israel meant death or worst to any Palestinian. I the late 30s and early 40s, the Grand Mufti of Palestine assured death to any traitor, seeking to have peace negotiations. How can anyone blame Israel as the only democracy in the Middle East for the perpetual encouragement of violence and poverty that the Arab monarchies foster and use to maintain their power. Ignorance and lack of reasons to seek a better life have served Syria and Iran and Egypt well thes almost 60 years.

Hamas had a public support and a big majority in Palestinian parliament and they also enjoy a massive support of common man through out the world specially in Islamic world. So that US, Israel, and EU stop Mahmood Abas Support because an attitude in which they try to chose not only there friend with threats but also to chose there enemies is senseless.
US, Israel, and EU must remember if they want peace and practical implementation of agreements, they must have to start dialog with there original enemies on fact and argument basses not with there own pipits like Hamid karzai, Jalal Talibani, Mahmmod Abas, Husn-e-Mubarak and Pervaiz Musharaf. Dialogue will be a only real settlement of the present crises but if US, Israel, and EU leave extreme attitude, intolerance and aggressive planning for the peace of world.
Members of Hamas, Alquida, Taliban, Hizbullah and all other genuine Muslim organization are also human being as people of US, Israel, and EU are. This is time to understand there demands and now They must not treat as are treating in Afghanistan, Iraq, Abu Guraib Prison, Guantanamo bay, Labnan, Palestine and Israeli prison.
In the end I would like to appeal US nation and people to stop there government to do this all wrong especially funding to divide Muslim. In short term it will bring harm for Muslim but in long term it shall must bring huge problems for West and US

To all Satarians' Pleas don't rush to blow up the planet earth. There are quite enough ignorants in that planet to help us with out requesting to blow each other up. Now the rich nations are consoiring to blow up the poor, when the power are done with they will face each other, then, with their nuclear arms they will desroy them selves. Ten, we can clean the mess and shall be ours. Lets focus on nuclear After math clean up technology after the "Dummys" do the job.
The wise thing is for the U.S administartion to respect & practice what the U.S. breaches "Democracy". If the U.S. wants respect it should recognize Hamas and because Hamas camed in a Democratic way. It should be respscted not shunned. Shunning Hamas and trying to destroy it is a total stupidity, hypocracy and decite. At some point I was a believer that the U.S and its Allies are true about the spread of democracy. Now I doo't believe in that at all. I trully see the U.S. as the nation that will lead to the distruction of man kind.

Not only is this another example of a failed ME policy of the Bush government, but another defeat for Isreal. Another antagonistic Muslim area around Isreal and the only ones to blame are Isreal and the United States.

Isreal's policy of aparthied and genocide against Palestinians has failed. The politically and morally bankrupt Isrealis are led by a PM with a zero percent approval rating and an Army that is still licking its wounds of Lebenon.

Jimmy Carter's book "Palestine-Peace not Aparthied" rips apart the so called Isreali democracy where a million Arabs are not allowed to vote on the basis of race. Arabs get 1/5th per capita water for four times the price. An Arab cannot have a business competing a Jew, Gaza is a cage with water on one side and a wall on three with exits controlled by Isrealis. A twelve year old Paletinian child is tried as an adult in the courts and Palestinians are tried in military courts with no access to civilian courts and can only be represented by Jewish lawyers. Even in the West Bank there are scores of Jewish settlements that are connected by roads through Palestinian lands but cannot be travelled by Arabs. New routes have been created and lands have been walled for Palestinians to create detours that take them hours to cover instead of minutes. The list goes on, horrific, hair raising, chilling, opressive and genocidal measures of the Isreali government.

One does not have the moral authority to criticize PLO, Hezbollah, Hamas and the suicide bombers if they do not have the moral courage to criticize the Isreali government for its atrocities.

The Irony is that the vast majority of the Jewish population wants peace with PLO Hezbollah and Hamas, but the Zionist minority believes in subjugating the Arabs and infact has taken its own people hostage. The results are coming through, a strong Hamas, a strong Hezbollah, a strong Syria, a strong Iran and ultimately strong Muslim Iraq. Where has fifty years of tyranny brought Isreal? To the Brink of moral, social and political annhilation.
