Today's Editorials: Remembering Lady Bird
WaPo ... remembers Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of former President Lyndon Johnson, who died yesterday. The editors note that while the former first lady dedicated her life to her "difficult, driven" husband and his career, she herself "would have made a good leader at the national level, perhaps a great one."
LAT ... argues that although Democrats promised to end pork-barrel spending when they regained support of Congress last year, "in reality they just found a sneakier way to fund their pet projects." The editors urge "Democrats to keep their word and pass a law requiring public disclosure of earmark sponsors" ... noting the high level of diabetes and obesity among California children, urges state lawmakers to provide more funding to the state's schools to boost the quality of physical education classes.
NYT ... notes that schools and schoolgirls have become targets for terrorism in Afghanistan "because they represent one of the new government's proudest achievements," and urges Washington to provide more than the $1 billion it has promised the country next year for humanitarian and reconstruction aid. "That figure still pales when compared with Afghanistan's needs and the billions being spent each week to fight the disastrous Iraq war," the editors write ... argues that trying juvenile offenders as adults -- "except in isolated cases involving extreme violence" -- is "both inhumane and counterproductive," and urges Congress to pass legislation that would encourage states to use frameworks "based more on mentoring and rehabilitation."
WSJ ... argues that White House predictions that the deficit will shrink by more than 50 percent over the next three years should prompt Congress to cut taxes. "As a hedge against the economy cooling down, it might be time to cut tax rates further on the economy's most productive assets and workers."
