Today's Editorials: Terrorist Threat Cynicism
NYT ... notes that the Bush administration has begun to trumpet the terrorist threat against the United States in an attempt to bolster support for the war in Iraq. "It is a breathtakingly cynical ploy, but in the past it has worked to cow Democrats into silence, if not always submission, and herd Republicans back onto the party line." The editors add: "That must not happen this time. By now, Congress surely can see through the president's fear-mongering and show Mr. Bush the exit from Iraq that he refuses to find for himself" ... encourages the commission that picks the sites for next year's presidential debates to choose New Orleans as one of the venues. "If there's any sense of justice, relevance, even poetic stagemanship at work, New Orleans should emerge hands down as the site for the debate that will be dedicated to the nation's domestic problems" ... notes that condom distribution is an integral part of stopping the spread of HIV among prison inmates and the "wives and lovers to whom they inevitably return when their sentences are completed," and urges states to enact laws that enable public health officials to distribute condoms to inmates who want them.
LAT ... notes that Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) has announced plans to introduce a bill creating a carbon tax on global warming -- a proposal he doesn't wish to see pass -- in an effort to "demonstrate to fellow Democrats that Americans aren't willing to pay a price to solve climate change and that politicians will suffer for trying." The editors argue that "Dingell's mockery of a solution that many of the nation's most prominent economists and environmentalists (as well as this editorial page) have endorsed is juvenile and destructive."
WaPo ... notes that lawmakers are once again attempting to restore habeas corpus to prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, and urges congressional Republicans to drop their opposition to the plan. "By denying hundreds of detainees the most basic of legal rights, that of challenging their detention, the Bush administration has continued to damage the country's image and moral authority abroad. No government should be allowed to hold people indefinitely without affording them a chance to challenge that detention," the editors write ... slams China for tightening restrictions on the media during the run-up to the 2008 Olympics, despite officials' promises to do the opposite. "The government has been relatively lenient with foreign journalists but has subjected Chinese journalists working for domestic or foreign publications to harsh sentences on trumped-up charges or technicalities. Outsiders will be watching to see whether China's pre-Olympic promises are worth anything at all."
WSJ ... notes that even though the president is a lame duck, he effectively wielded the power of the veto last week to block Democrats from granting the nation's 23,000 federal airport screeners collective bargaining rights.

If the U.S. is the strongest and greatest nation in the world, why are our leaders such whimps when it comes to protecting the citizens of this nation? War, terrorist threats, poisoned food from China, first our pet, now us. Gas prices that are filling the pockets of the major oil companies(have we not learned anything from Eron), utility cost that rise every few months, unrealistic increases in property taxes, when we are told property values are declining, ridiculous medical and medicine cost, alot of talk about our borders but no action. Little or no security on the borders and ports stopping, or even hindering, potential terrorist from entering. Where do our leaders buy their food? Are we, "the people", paying big bucks to adorn their tables with safe sources of food while our food is unsafe? Are other countries having food safety issues? Haven't heard, have you? Where do restaurants get their food? Perhaps we should stop eating out because the food may be poison? Our leaders, and other politicians, are increasing their salaries and expense accounts to cover rising cost. Is anyone increasing yours? Just so many "distractions", and all at once..... Strange. Consider the word "attrition". Also consider the media, and the role they play. Then consider men like Rupert Murdock. Men like George Bush. Indecision, idle debate, division earmark the leaders of this nation. They think us fools, are we? This is from a republican who wants her country back.

What is truly "breathtaking", is that some people chose to shield their eyes and "see no evil" from the threat of Islamic terrorism. 9/11, Madrid, London, and a host of other attacks around the world in this decade alone are not just scary bedtime stories. What does it take, more bombs, a biological or radiological attack, or even a mushroom cloud over one of our cities before the morons on the left (and some on the right) finally get it? Don't like Bush very much? I get it. Frustrated and angry about the Iraq war? Understandable. But realize and understand the consequence of US failure and the resulting perception of an Al Queda victory. Either in the Middle East, Asia, or here, we're either going to fight these people or curl up on the floor and be kicked to death. No matter how much you allow your political hatred to rule your thinking, these people are not going away because we leave Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other place.

I suggest that Washington.com create a policy in which correct spelling and sentence structure, as well as making sure the facts are actually facts, become priorities.
I suggest you need a tough and wise old editor to lead your group. One who is willing to send back or correct the writing before it is published. In other words, accuracy should be returned to journalism.

At least we are beginning to learn what the term "bully pulpit" really means. Some narrow-minded, self-righteous ignoramus uses the biggest possible megaphone (TV) in the largest public square (the public's airways) to scare the most possible people into thinking the sky is falling ... and that he can hold it up because he's hiding 'midst god's skirts ... BUT we ALL (including our representatives in Congress) have to agree with whatever he says and whatever he does whenever he wants ... or our traitorous temerity gives aid and comfort to the unseen, unnumbered and unspeaking enemy ... wherever they are ... RIGHT?
Oh, yeah! And being a 'brave' leader means that he's got the guts to set aside the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to implement HIS Amerika ... Give me a break! Impeach NOW

A forum such as this is available to us as a precious right. And to call anyone a name, or simply to be rude disparages and demeans that right. And it adds nothing to the disparate points of view which are out there. Yelling and screaming "on line," as it were, helps no one.
It occurs to me that the NY Times is very, very likely 100% correct. But it may not be. That is and always has been the value of the "bully pulpit." The President always has the power to change the issues of public discourse, and it truly does appear that this is precisely what he is doing now---especially more credible since he has now fired or demanded the resignation of essentially everyone in his Administrration with an ounce of backbone or integrity
The hooker? George III may be right. And that is the reason we cannot ignore this threat--if it be real--or any threat. We must remain at the height of readiness but, at the same time, be wise enough to undertand that even if there is an attack, even an enrmously successful one, the strength of our Country is in being resilient. (But we must resist the temptation popular amongst the 2008 Presidnential candidates to simply strike back without investigation and before we even know who is responsible!) We must be "elastic" and able to bounce back. To simply become unglued would be a victory for Al-Qaeda or whoever who want us to "terrorized." I for one believe we have an inner strength at least equal to that of the Israelis--and they have been going through this precise set of circumstances for over sixty years now. Be strong, but be cynical whenever our current President speaks.

Is anyone really believing that Bush is somehow doing the right thing in Iraq?
He invaded without proof and allowed Halliburton (Cheney) to have a no-bid contract to "fix the infrastructure."
Millions $ were lost in that great give-away.
I'm an independent who doesn't politicize anything, however, Bush is a serious threat to this nation in a number of ways, least of which is (the War?) in Iraq.

I think we need to read between the lines here. One we have big and I mean big buisness men like Bush and Cheney who are using the terrorist threat for their own agenda, they may have even had something to do in in implementing it here in this country to achieve their goals. Two the terroist threat is very real, Islam seeks world domination. The resent e-mail I received about a demonstration in London where Islamic people were carrying placards reading "behead anyone who slanders Islam' , "To hell with freedom" . "Torcher anyone who (disagrees) with Islam" . "England Your 911 is coming" etc.. Those who refuse to learn from history are condemed to repeat it!!!!!!!! For 5000 plus years Islam has brought nothing but pain, agony, chaos, and a horrible death to everyone who ignors it or adopts it. Just like Europe ignored Hitler's religion of a master race. America and Europe are ignoring the infiltration of a master religion. So if you don't like your freedoms in the Bill of rights, Keep ignoring the infiltration of Islam into the U.S., and there won't be anymore sites like this one to post comments on. Enough said? No! Get your head out of the sand!!!

Gee. I used to have a little respect for Rob Anderson. I didn't realize, until now, what a blithering idiot he is.
I only hope that when his bumper sticker veneer is removed, he can still reach for a crayon to pen an apology to the people who have understood the terrorist threat all along.

Cheney/Bush need a new terror attack, so they will create one, unless they have finally actually riled enough innocent Arabs by killing their relatives to drive them to revenge on America.
Good thing you can type with your mouth full of sand. If you took YOUR head out of the sand and looked at the evidence concerning 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Project for a New American Century and "Rebuilding America's Defenses" by Cheney and crew; you'd quit typing crap and use that crayon you have to write an Impeach Them NOW poster, better yet, just arrest them for the Treason of 9/11.

Why don't we acknowledfe the truh?
We are in he midst of WORLD WAR III.
Therefore we have to act accordingly and stop just talking about terrorism.
New drastic strategies are needed to be enforced in the Western World.
All citizens need to be obliged to be issued with Identity Cards and to obtain these they must fill in a lengthy form which is a psychological test desigened by the best psychitrist in the world.
These tests would provide the authorities with mental, psychological and attitudinal profiles of all the citizens, tourists, non'permanent residents and those seeking passports - be they American, European, Australinas and so on - of those with violent and terrorist sympathies and actual terrorist intentions.
Our leaders are indeed ispineless when it comes to protect us, because in times such as ours to politicise about terrorism instead of acting is irresposible./
Let libertarians scream their heads off. They are people who are a nuisence in our times when we are plagued by the scurge of extintion.

Terrorist Threat Cynicism--Cherry picking of intelligence, twisting and distorting facts, and blatant lies are just part of the Fascist Fear Machine. Just be on guard--become and stay focused on the facts.

Once former US Presidents tried to kill the now friendly Libyan Col. Gaddafi and ageing Cuban Fidel Castro. Both leaders have outlived few US Pres.Pres Bush,
Rumfeld and Powell(both at large)using 9/11,cried wolf to gullible Americans
Congress,UN,EU,allies, international community and hanged one time US friend against Iran Saddam Hussein who had nothing to with 9/11, Osama bin Laden,Al-Quaeda and WMD. Hussien's crime: he killed a few hundred Iraqis, had oil and defied US though guilty of invading Kuwait. Now knee-deep in Iraq perceiving Al-Quaeda threats in the US and while counting on
new found temporary enemy-friends Sunni insurgents who are killing Al-Quaeda suspects. Soon Talibans will be US ally! Night long Senate debates can go on but I don't foresee any US pullout from Iraq until the end of Bush's term in 2008. Sadly, its a reality with Bush.

Michael Couch is correct. Most all here are cognizant of the Project for the New American Century, etc. and the smoke and mirrors we have been subjected to. It is heartening to see that some of our citizens are paying attention to the obvious. The Neo-Conservative agenda is only interested in greed and power and have not addressed our challenges. Keep passing the work, fellow patriots.

To GBS: What actually is truly breathtaking is that people like you fail to understand that anti-Americanism is growing and growing globally as a consequence of its foreign policy and especially because of its illegal occupation of Iraq. London has had to face terrorist attacks because Blair stood by the White House and violated Iraq's sovereignty.
Something that is not explained in the media is the meaning of 'winning' the war. Who exactly are you defeating? Iraqis who are defending their country from a US takeover? Iranians who have as much 'right' to occupy Iraq as the US? Shia who were persecuted under Saddam and therefore simply fulfilling Saddam's vision of a Sunni led country? Al-Qaeda who have greater reserves and bases in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia and are recruiting globally, now from Sudan and other African countries who all see the US as the great Satan? Ignorance of US foreign policy is what has led to this, and if that ignorance and fear-mongering continues, so will anti-Americanism.
Just a thought: 700,000 Iraqi's have died since the US led invasion. That's more than the Rwandan genocide. It's interesting to point out to Islamophobes in the US that the University of Maryland's Programme on International Policy Attitudes, found that 51% of all Americans believe that bombings and other attacks intentionally aimed at civilians are justifiable. The fact that America is killing innocent Muslims at an infinitely greater rate than has ever been the case vice versa, simply never occurs to the majority of Americans, who see themselves as the victims of Islamic aggression. Wake up to who is doing the mass killing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looking at voting records in Islamic countries... roughly 30% of the population vote to support hard line Islamic parties and/or Sharia law.
So the enemy always had 300-400 million at their disposal. Our efforts in Iraq are not necessarily increasing the numbers of jihadist. Nor are we fighting a small number of insurgents. We are in effect fighting a religion.
Whenever there is a ideology or organization that attracts people to it, you will find similar numbers of dedicated radicals. This is evident throughout history and you can see it everywhere. Including other religions, almost all political parties, revolutionary groups, and even in local social and professional groups.
In these organizations it is the dedicated radicals that keep things afloat, their fevor is the lifeblood of the organization and the organization is flavored by their thoughts, demands, and leadership.
