Today's Hot Topics: The Shifting GOP

Republicans and 2008: Under the headline "Bush the albatross" in the LAT, Ronald Brownstein argues that even though President Bush isn't running in 2008, his low approval ratings have the power to bring down his entire party. The "weight of experience suggests that Republicans in Congress and in the presidential race are vastly underestimating the challenge of escaping the undertow Bush is creating," he writes ... in the WaPo, Michael Gerson encourages Republicans to seriously consider the consequences of a Rudy Giuliani nomination: "To begin with," he writes, "the ideological shift would be greater than meets the eye." He continues: "On the evidence of the polls, many conservatives are ready for a little cultural combat, and Giuliani looks like a man who knows how to use a knife. He might successfully appeal to blue-collar resentment against liberal elitism and Democratic antiwar overreach, while winning back some pro-choice, suburban female voters."

The Democrats think they only need to win Ohio to elect their candidate but if Giuliani is the Republican candidate, he could take New York and that would swing the election.

Oh yeah, we need an other scam as president, with the help of the media wow america's mayor !
Did anybody hear his plan for healthcare, energy, everything is the same like Bush kick the average citizen to enrich his bodies.

Giuliani? Take New York? Har, har. Now pull the other one.

Posted by: Bearpaw | July 18, 2007 01:46 PM

I still say that the only two viable candidates are Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter. Their voting record witnesses to their honesty and accuracy in representing the American peoples' wishes. That in itself is pretty rare when one considers that most of the congressmen and even our own president have to be bombarded with emails and phone calls and faxes to even make an attempt at listening to us.
Check out Project Vote Smart on the net to see what ANY of the congressmen have voted on in the recent past. You'll realize that I am correct.

Giuliani? has everyone forgotten his efforts to hijack the fund for the widows and children of firemen and use it as a parking place for his cronies at large salaries with himself as chairman, an attempt derailed only when the widows arose in outrage?

DUNCAN HUNTER? Egads!

Posted by: Richard J. Mullin | July 18, 2007 02:00 PM

Giuliani. My gosh. He is soooo limited. Watch him debate and, to me, he is intelligent only to his expertise. Which is domestic affairs, close to the folds of his NY City. Of course, he can expand more than that but in any debate event he reveals himself short, a rather small man by temperment, course so is BUSH, not to mention, past history, DAN QUAYLE. Oh my. To me, he is virtually a joke. I know, he proved himself strolling hardhat in crumbling Twin Tower NY City, likely partly due he had no headquarters to work out of since he insisted that EMERGENCY SERVICES, FIRE/POLICE be located near the broken Towers, but he inarguably was the best battlefield mayor calming the CITY and Nation during catastrophe. That's it! That was his shining heroic, best left as his last legacy.

He fit NY City perfect. Other than that, pft. He is provincial, regional, municipal. He is small potatoes. And frankly, to me, he is a ridiculous REPUBLICAN PRESEDENT candidate. If nominated, unlikely as that is, considering his glaring provincialism and shortcomings he could be less than another MCGOVERN, and not win a single State, including NY.

Save your money and news print. Hillary will be the Democratic nominee and Rommney will be the Republican nominee. Remember you saw it here first. And the winner is Hillary

Seems our next President will have a bigger mess than 9/11 to clean up. I live very close to Ground Zero and in no way want to minimize the tragedy nor the depth of the loss. Giuliani's visibility was oddly comforting and gave a feeling that someone was in charge during an utterly surreal and chaotic time. Excellent point below about the Widows and Orphans Fund. As a local who lived through it hour by hour, I'm wondering if the statute of limitation has run out for America's Mayor. What have you done for me lately?

Posted by: prpeace | July 18, 2007 03:41 PM

Oh Harry Oh Harry, we need another Harry.

The anti-Giuliani vitriol parallels the anti-Reagan chorus in 1980........"too old, too conservative, he's just an actor"!

On election day in 1980, the pundits ate crow, and the "Trigger Happy Cowboy" that was supposedly to have started WWIII, left a Soviet Union on the verge of collapse...

Giuliani, like Reagan, is confrontational & out to shake down the Status Quo, both domestically & internationally-just look at what occurred under his stewardship in NY while mayor............

Giuliani ,despite what the pundits say, will be the next President, and like Reagan, he will be GREAT!!!!!!!!

Posted by: john | July 18, 2007 06:57 PM

At this point, I don't think there is any question that those Republican candidates who stick closly to Bush's policy choices are doomed to failure (ie. John McCain) and that those Republicans who stray from Bush (ie. Guiliani) have a much better chance of success in the 08 elections. Regardless, I would like to see all the candidates address the United States' commitment to the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals, which call for cutting world hunger in half by 2015 and eliminating it altogether by 2025. Indeed, it is estimated that the expenditure of a mere $19 billion would eliminate starvation and malnutrition worldwide. In a time when the current defense budget is $522 billion, the goal of eradicating world hunger is clearly well within reach and it is my hope that whoever becomes president in 2008 addresses this pressing issue.

John, "Giuliani, like Reagan, is confrontational & out to shake down the Status Quo, both domestically & internationally-just look at what occurred under his stewardship in NY while mayor....."

I wish I could believe for even a second that you're kidding.

Rudy, like Reagan, is a two-faced opportunistic liar who would sell his mother for good publicity while sleeping with his cousin and cheating on his mistress.

As for "shaking down" the Status Quo - your misuse of the phrase might have been funny in a pathetic way were it not for the fact that because of Rudy, body parts of 9/11 victims are in landfills and potholes instead of graves.

A close "look at what occurred under his stewardship in NY while mayor" would probably turn up more body parts.

And Reagan was great? The list of horrors that we are going thru now that can be traced to Reagan goes on and on and on......

But for me, here is what sums up everything that was wrong with Reagan: the McCarthy Hearings.

Remember Joe McCarthy and the House Unamerican Activities Committee? Remember the Blacklisting that destroyed lives?

Who stood before the Committee and named names first?

Who accused others of being Communist and ruined their lives?

Who profitted from his testimony by being rewarded with work while innocent people lost everything?

Who got his start in politics by actively participating in one of the most shameful episodes in American History?

What super-patriot made a show of accusing others of being unamerican but never bothered to serve his country during WWII?

Ronald Reagan.

Yeah, we need more of that.

His only claim to fame is his photops after 9/11. Ask the firefighters what they think of him, they hate him for his actions after 9/11.Tho the video they released about him was overboard, a lot of it is true (see factcheck.org) The police went wild with brutality under his appointed buddy, Kerik(remember when Kerik was considered as Homeland Director and had to withdraw in disgrace)ie. sodomizing with nightsticks. That alones shows Guliani nepotism and poor choices. He was fiscally irresponsible and left the city broke, When he wasn't famously in drag, he kicked his wife out of the mayor's mansion. He was pro-choice and pro-gay, actually staying with gay friends til he kicked his wife, Donna Hanover, out to move his new floozy in. Locally famous for his temper tantrums and payback to anyone that disagreed with him. The 1 bn dollars the feds gave new york for the victims have so far paid out $14,000 to a victim and 74 million for overhead. Is that the way you want the next President to govern.

I also want to add, how far would the money spent in Iraq gone to make social security solvent or bring healthcare to the uninsured, or secure the borders. I guess my priorities are different

One main reason we now suffer through the costly - in both $ AND Lives/Body Parts terms - aftermath of nearly 2 terms of one of the most inept, incompetent & clueless Presidencies in our nation's history, is a totally air-headed thinking/perception re "real politics" expressed by "Sherry" & "John" (7/18 @ 13:47 & 18:57, resp'y).
In a TRUE democracy, everyone has the right to their opinion, plus opportunity to express same publicly.
But shameless "shilling" for people - especially publicly elected officials, now with readily accessible "track records" to account for performance - indicates a strong immaturity in the reasoning department that demands calling.
(1)Ms. Sherry's choices of T. Tancredo & D. Hunter, as "optimal" choices for Repub Presidential consideration (& winners!?): IF you sincerely believe this, I really need to talk to you about a couple of bridges I have 4Sale. These 2 "enlightened & responsive" incumbent Reps, for Colo & CA respectively, philosophically weigh in somewhere "Right" of Attila & Ghengis.
Tom seems to have never met an immigrant &/or alien that he liked; whereas, (2) Hunter's never seen a Defense bill item he didn't simply love (to death?); hence his current VERY serious problems w/conflicts of interest issues!).

As for John, poor John; you've totally bought into the Repub's massive, longterm PR/Propaganda effort to resurect a 2nd Lincoln-esque "idol" (to offset JFK & FDR) for the GOP & its blindly loyal following. As a longtime CA anti-poverty advocate, suffering RR's 2 terms of the "Welfare Queen, picking up her checks in a Cadillac" campaigns Governance; then, while serving in DC, through all his posturing, posing & phony "Gift of the Gap" hyperbole (stemming from all his TV-Teleprompter training, NOT from any intellectual capacity!), while concurrently creating the worst recession the US had since the Great Depression), to REALLY know him was NOT to love/respect him:I wouldn't wish a repeat of his ilk on my worst enemy! And "it was the Economy, Stupid!" that brought down the "Evil Empire"; Pope John Paul II & many others served as catalysts for the final demise, but the USSR's rotting economic infrastructure was a known fact well before RR ever came to office.
So, "back to the history books" kids; you've got a lot to learn! Sorry to dis-illusion you, but your kinds of thinking & value judgements already cost us (& future generations) ALL - dearly! - via 2 VERY close/highly questionable Presidential elections. It's long past the time to "pull-up short" this kind of very questionable reasoning, and set records straight' for serious minded, thinking people to consider. S.O'B.

We had better hope that enough Republicans shift their loyalty to the country rather than the President if we are to salvage what remains of our military. Gen. Petraeus is already hedging on direct recommendations forthcoming from his Sept. report. He has shifted into phrases such as 'indications of progress' and 'possibilities for outcomes'. This lost war will not be ended by Bush or any military person, only Congress can stop this farce but Republicans must declare where their loyalties lie and join Democrats in defeating the most tragic and destructive president in our history.

Posted by: kaycwagner | July 19, 2007 06:13 PM

Everyone forgets the Silent Majority. I am one of them and give my vote to someone strong and unafraid to upset those who live in LaLa land. I wish the Dems were accurate in their assessments on the war and its aftermath with an immediate pullout. That would solve all the problems, wouldnt it? Bring the troops home
and AlKaida will return to their farms and villages. Repeal the Patriot Act so I can speak freely on my cell phone. Seems that some folks prefer to see Bush fail,,, afterall,, that is important to some seeking election. There are many intelligent minds in this forum and in our government. I want to see some of the intelligentia outline the events that follow after the US pullout. Just one time please will someone present their anticipated scenario and the next 10 years following an early pullout of troops from Iraq.

Why do you only want offensive reports? Because the liberal Washington Post invites all Bush bashers? You are the liberal "drive by media" and you know who says that. Want some positive comments, like the recent speech Joe Liebermann made May 16 before the Republican Jewish Coalition? I'll send it if you have the guts to print it.

Привет всем пользователям форума blog.washingtonpost.com!
