The Crowd Arrives

Today is the first day since I've been here that the Overflow Press Room (OPR) is pretty much packed. It being the first day of former Enron chief executive Jeffrey K. Skilling's cross-examination at the hands of federal prosecutors, it makes sense.

The media contingent is about the same size as it's been, but the OPR -- a courtroom with a projection television setup allowing occupants to watch the trial five floors above -- is filled up with "civilians." Some are lawyers connected with the civil suits against Skilling, but the rest appear to be regular folks who want to see Skilling in the hands of the prosecutors.

The federal building where the trial is being held also contains the main downtown post office. This being tax day, there was a long line down there in the post office. I noticed quite a few of those in line ended up in the OPR. I guess they figured as long as they are in the building, might as well check it out...
